Help!

My FJ decided to die the morning of the Kiwi, which prompted lots a hell of a lot of swearing from me

It is definitely ignition - it was just turning over and no sigh of life at all, not even with engine start.

This afternoon I got into diagnostics, and it has left me confused. Removing a spark lead and grounding a spark plug against the engine showed no spark. I have checked the resistance of the primary and secondaries of both coils and they are ok. I have also checked the resistances of the pickup coils and they are ok as well. Also checked the fuses, netural switch, kill switch, sidestand switch and they are ok as well.

So, it has narrowed it down to the ignitor unit and I even applied 12v direct to it (bypassing the ignition switch) and the neutral light, etc comes on, but no spark when I try to start it.

So, I am pretty sure it is the ignitor unit. Is there a way to test this as no doubt a new one will be expensive and non returnable.

Does anyone know how to test the ignitor unit or have a spare FJ1100 one that I could borrow in order to test?

thanks

From my experience from aging Yamaha electrics ....

Looks like a relatively cheap fix here ...

Have a look at this thread too

Let us know what you end up doing :)

Yes, I had a look at the Dynapaks and also the issues with reliability and warranty issues. I will either try and find another FJ one or look at the Dyna 2000 ignition - at least it is an established and well respected product. Approx NZ$450 landed....

Lucky bastard. None of my bikes ever conked out BEFORE the ride.

They have a computer that tells them when I am as far from home as possible, its a sunday, raining, and there is no cellphone coverage. THEN they conk out.

Not taking the piss, but have you tried brand new plugs ?
I had same problem after a cold night at the monkey. Plugs got flooded ,no spark at plugs . Did all the usual with drying wet plugs etc, no go. New plugs and it started 1st go.

Yep, I tried a new plug and just grounded it against the engine to check for spark. The FJ has usually been a reliabel starter, but there was no sign of life at all in the hour that I spent swearing at it. Ended up taking the R1 instead, so all good!

Try to find his wallet first!
Make sure when you get it goimg that you immediately test the charge voltage in case the rec/reg has gone & was the reason the ign fried.

XJ's have proper Alternators so don't suffer the same kind of charging failures as later model units that run permanent magnets in the rotor.

Definitely the ignitor unit is dead, so I have ordered a Dyna 2000 on Ebay - be here next week

Some 80's il4's had resistors built into the ignition swith block. These resistors "gated" the ignitor, so that it would ignite.
Bandits also used this system. It was supposed to be a anti hot wire system.
Not saying that the FJ has that system, but it could.
Bottom line is try another genuine FJ key/ignition switch as well as the ignitor.
Good luck.

This bit--line two

Maybee I read it wrong but I took that as JUST turning over -barely turning over.
Heck stranger things have happened.

Well Simon is pretty strange, but he was a techy in a previous life so he's smart enough not to be spraying engine start into a lethargically spinning engine.
