Thanks Murray. Goggle maps was suggesting down Owairaka valley, SH32, desert road etc...looks shortest but maybe not quickest.

Ive done it heaps (still stop in Palmie everytime I go to Wellington. heaps of friends in Palmy from workingh there for 7 years. Always lotsa cops between Hunterville and Sanson but good straight roads and the road between Te Kuiti and Taumarunui is heaps better than it was with a lot more passing areas.

Have a good trip away!! Was that you we saw going past the Hotel Sunday Morning.??

Its the quickest, take into account the roads which can be travelled at a higher speed and the lack of towns to go through, its way quicker, been here done that many times to figure out which was faster

Why the hell would you go that way if you are going to Palmerston North?
Vinegar Hill/Cheltnam is way better/quicker in the car, even better on the bike.

I used to drive down every week mate and did a time study on it over a few weeks, going down one way coming back the other, the western by pass won by around a average of 20mins

It's hard to imagine anybody wanting to HURRY to get to Palmerston North from Hamilton, or vice versa for that matter.

The SH3/SH4 route is actually shorter, but you can easily get caught behind trucks/auckland drivers on the windy bits north of Taumaranui. I travel to Ruapehu every week - we usually go down via SH4 home via Western Bypass/Old Taupo Rd/Horahora Rd - if you're not familiar with the Owairaka Valley/Mango route it can seem like you're the middle of nowhere for ages!

I can comfortably be on the Desert Rd in under 2 hrs from Hamilton going Western Bypass. Going real fast it's more like 1.45

Bear in mind road closure of desert rd,as well as other with unseasonal snowfalls etc.

Nothing worse than halfway and road closed, then having to go via SH3and via Naki lol.

Knew a guy about 10yrs ago, picked up a horse from dads place in Hawera, heading to Matamata,Cambridge areas, headed to New Plymouth got to Awakino, road closed to slips so,had to go via Paraparas, halfway through and road closed, back to Wanganui, onto Bulls and turned back due to flooding at National Park/Waiouru closed,so thought SH5 via Napier to Taupo, took 20 hours driving to unload last animal off.
