View Full Version : When parking your bike...

Which way do you face the front wheel?
I notice some face it away (to the right) from the bike lean.
Personally, I always face it (to the left) towards the bike lean.
If I happen to park on an incline (facing downward) I would still face the wheel to towards the bike lean. Just seems the natural thing to do.
Facing it away from the lean (in this scenario) would probably aid the bike in not falling over ...yes?

Always to the left for me, the ZX6 barely leans over at all when on it's stand so if the wheel is to the right it is virtually upright.
And if I'm parking it on a slope, I'll generally back it in, and put the rear wheel against a curb or something similar :-)

If I wanna lock the steering it has to turn left...

Its a given that the bike is always parked rear wheel against the curb. Isn't it?

Yes yes, if locking you dont have a choice, but just normal parking of the bike when you want a coffee or a smoke  do you have a preference?

Normal parking for a smoko - straight ahead seems just fine most of the time

generally into the lean, the front wheel trail makes it want to go that way putting the other way will make it lean over ever so slightly more I would think. Also, if I've had to flick it over to reserve to I'll put em the other way to remind me to go straight to a fuel station. Yeh would expect that to aid it a little bit, better to leave it in gear or park the other way round though I would think.

steering lock only works when turned to the left, but it looks better turned to the right

Usually left - increases the angle onto the stand and feels a little less likely to fall over t'other way. As much force of habit as anything else...

Always to the left. That's the way the steering lock works.

I hang to the left, if that's what your asking Mark.

I hang to the left, if ya interested.
Im to the right...just aint enough room on the left :shifty:
Do you think 'dressing to the right/left' has anything to do with parking ya bike Jacko?

Might have summit to do left/right handed, left/right hand thread or length of stroke?
Dunno? haha

I guess you may have to get some scales and see if the weight changes on the side stand only, then you will know if turning left or right changes that, cause if the lean angle is more upright when turned to the right there should less weight on the stand?
But someone else has already said that so I will just carry on lurking.....

It looks better if turned to the right - so always to the right for me.

To the left, automatically. However I have been told that if the bike is on a lean and has a full tank of gas (i.e. reeeeeeeally heavy to "pull up" out of the parking lean) to turn the front wheel to the right and heave it upright. Admittedly that is not talking about how you leave it when you get off, rather what you do once you're back on and ready to ride off into the sunset.
(Haven't had the opportunity to test that theory out yet).

All to the left, and none fell over in the quakes.

Always to the left. Why do people think it looks better to the right? It definitely doesn't if surrounded by other bikes that are pointing left... But then, I prefer order to chaos, so maybe those who point right just like to stand out.

To the left for me, and yes your right Princess... the tip for shortys and the not so muscular is to sit on your bike and turn the bars to the right to aid in lifting it off the stand... it does work (not that I need to do that seeing as I am tall and muscular :) )

I turn my wheel left into the lean, and point the bike so it is pointing up hill, so that it is less likely to come off its side stand.

When parking up my bike I have become accustomed to following procedure. Seems to work well for me, or just work:
*Pull into space to park
*Straighten up the front wheel
*Put right foot on ground to take weight while reaching for kick stand
*Drop on ground on right hand side
*Pick it up (ok, get everyone else to pick it up for me)
*Lean on kick stand
*Turn wheel left into lean of bike
*Look incredibly sheepish for parking my bike miles away from everyone else again, as per usual.
Oops, did I just say all of that out loud? What I actually meant was, yes, front wheel full left lock.

I always put the bike in gear and lock the wheel before after parking.
Giving due consideration to the road camber and gradient before choosing where to stop can be challenging.
Sometimes take 'ckin ages......

To the right as I tend to pull the right hand grip towards me as I get off. Bike feels more stable and less likely to fall if I put it to right.

Not for me... not at all hard... in fact, being humble comes so naturally to me I dont even notice Im doing it. It comes with being modest, muscular and tall. Just another positive trait in my excessive list of positive traits.
Sheesh.... Im so incredibly amazing - and the good thing is - I dont even realise it.

Thats way cool.
Mine locks to the left.
I turn it to the left almost always
The DR sits pretty high on the stand so sometimes I have to be a bit careful if I am on a slope
I am left handed
Seems like the answer is
Left because most steering locks lock that way.
Then it just becomes a habit.
Also makes sense given most side stands are on the left hand side of the bike.. (aren't they?)

Hahaha my old keeway was super special and the wheel would only lock when turned fully to the right. Made for a very awkward parking stance. Reckon they must have installed in upside down or something. Fat load of good that was! :)

Hey Katie, we need bikepickingup lessons:apumpin:.
I dropped Eugenes bike on the weekend :Oops:and he had to help me pick it up.All I could see was the petrol dripping onto my right leg that was stuck under the thing.Even a hefty kick from my left foot only just shifted it.Geez and it was only the xr250...you'd think I could get it up eh?
Otherwise, whichever way the handlbars will lock does just fine for me. :whocares:about how it looks standing in line? No-one ever parks next to my bikes anyway:rofl:
