modest painting project at home has led to quite a nice shiny black finish on fairings but wondering if there is any way to achieve the intense wet-look gloss over the top at home. is there a particular type of clear gloss for this look, or is it the case that you need to sand and buff like crazy?
This is just a home project so while I understanding professional paint jobs are ideal, I would like to see if I can get a similar result at home.

Use clear (the same brand as your black paint) and go for it - but not TOO thick.
And it may well still need wet-sanding, cutting etc.
But the result hsould be good.

What he said.
Is it a rattle can job? If so and you've purchased them from a paint supply shop (in CHCH for example I can get cans of actual car paint put into rattle cans for wee jobs). You can get suitable clear coats too - as above it needs to be compatiable with the base coats.
As with any painting - multi light coats will give a better finish.
Post some images too.
One tip with rattle cans I learnt yonks ago was to get the can up to temp on a cooler day is sitting it in a bucket of warm water for 10 mins or so before using. Not hot water or you may overheat the can.
