Recommend me a back protecor

I've never bough one of these and a few of the bike shops I've been into didn't have much of a selection.

What are the good brands? How much should I pay for one? Anyone recommend places in Auckland to view a good range of back protectors?

i got an alphinestars bionic and its fantastic really. $300 but you dont even know your wearing it. So comfortable. Crashed twice with it on and it does its job!

Recommend you look for CE certified things with EN1621-2 Level 2 protection.

I'm sure they'll all provide excellent protection but for comfort, recommend the Knox. Heaps of videos online you can check out. Also, you can add a chest protector if you wish

I picked up a Spidi Defender back and chest guard from Motomail. Price was pretty sharp when I got it.

I wear it every day.
Have crashed in it twice. Didn't even feel the impact.

I also have an old Tecnik back protector that I no longer use. Feel a bit naked without the chest protection.

+1 look at the range at motomail. Best to get it fitted also because yes, fit definitely counts. I have this (http://www.motomail.co.nz/eStore/Style/RVARBKGRAVITY.aspx)one which meets the more stringent EN1621-2 CE Level 2 impact performance standard.

I've been looking to purchase my first back protector as well and after all the research I've 99% decided on the Knox Aegis Race.

I'll also be getting the chest guard as well.

Yeah 4 crashes for me in mine and sweet as, Oh btw I sell them to !!

The best things about the aegis is
1. Ventialtion
2. Kidney protectors ... no silly foam one proper rubber ones
3. they are adjustable
4. The race has Coccyx protection, many dont even cover this area off.
5. The flexibility , contours perfectly to the back
6. you get the chest guard that fits right in, designed together
7. Level two CE
8. First maker of back Protectors in the world, still the worlds best !!

Proven performance (for real)

Bottom line is any increased level of back protection is a good thing, pieces of foam that come in most jackets aren't going to do sweet FA in a serious fall. I chose the Knox Aegis because it's certified level 2 back protector first of all, secondly it's highly adjustable for a proper fitment which is important if you want to use the protector to it's maximum protective qualities. Thirdly it's comfortable, if it's not comfortable you're most likely to not want to wear it so there's little point in owning one if you don't use it, you can't pick and choose when you're likely to receive a back injury so using a back protector whenever you get on your bike is a good thing.
The Aegis is also generous enough in width to offer some rib and shoulder blade protection too where some back protectors are little more than spine guards (but that said that's the most important thing to protect), if you're getting a back protector why not (if it's comfortable ie: you'll wear it) get one that offers you the most protection possible but back to the original point something is better than nothing. Sure practicalities have to be taken into account which is why I went for the Knox Aegis over the Knox Contour, I thought it to be a bit more practical for everyday use. I'm not saying everyone needs to go out a buy a Knox back protector i'm just pointing out what I think are some of the benefits.

got my forcefield pro l2 from coleman suzuki at newton, auckland. rrp $280 for the small one. that was in april this year. pity they didn't sell the sub4, a superior model.
