No the message isn't getting through and I doubt it ever will. I doubt these people, buy a newspaper, read anything online or offline, listen to news on the radio and take any notice of what other than what their peers say. They live in their own bubble, stupefied with alcohol, drugs and whatever noise they call music. How can they know if there is a message that is targeted to them?

When we were kids there was a little ditty parents' used to quote:
There was a little girl, had a little curl, right in the middle of her forehead. :innocent:
When she was good, she was very very good but when she was bad, she was horrid!
Seems to spring to mind when musing New Zealand society behaviour and values! :shifty:

maybe time to stop promoting breeding programs for dregs.....?

This is why I don't get upset by the occasional stop for a random breath check at a checkpoint.
Some people just won't get the message into their heads, so some pre-emptory action is required.
(i.e. I don't get pissy about my "rights" being violated or something, I know I'm not drunk, and the cops don't know 'till they've checked me...)

Understood that the youthful brain has a low awareness of risk and consequence, especially the male. Seems reasonable advantage for us to have evolved that way to support the young going into battle. That would make "irresponsible" risk taking a biologiocal given among the youth/young adults. Equally understand that binge drinking to blackout generates as much brain damage as being physically knocked out. Is it reallistic to expect significant changes?

yes it is.Whilst the idea of risk is a foreign one to teenage males role models are also highly regarded. We have got to get away from the idea that all the best times can only be had when using alcohol or drugs.

Between that crash and the fatal with the three girls on SH2 I'm wondering just what is it with girls these days? I know they are capable of being as irresponsible as the worst of them but I honestly thought that the female of the species tended to be more on the conservative side. It seems that our young women are trying to outdo their male counterparts in some of the least desirable behaviours out there. Sad. Makes me worry for my own offspring that they're out sharing the roads with these brainless morons.

Yep, seems stupidity is no longer the preserve of young males. The Police are concerned at the number of females binge drinking and driving lately, I think they are overtaking the males for moronic acts.

The drunk girl lost control of the car when a passenger was passing her another bottle?!!! As if driving while drunk isn't bad enough, to be actually drinking while driving is a whole next level of idiocy.

This is not as much to do with driving per se (not that it isn't important) but more about New Zealand society's attitude to the consumption of alcohol. Having arrived in this country in the early 60's I can remember my father being absolutely astounded by the six o'clock swill. As an ex Royal Navy man who had been to a LOT of other places in the world he reckoned he had never seen anything quite like it. That legacy it seems is proving hard to live down.
Many years ago I did a post grad diploma in Cross Cultural Psychiatry and during the section on alcoholism I asked our lecturer (a Medical Superintendent whom I knew to be a recovering alcoholic) what his definition of an alcoholic was. The answer?..."the first time you go out with the specific intention of getting drunk, for whatever reason, be that because you have passed your exams, getting married, having a birthday whatever, then you are an alcoholic". Mmm. Pretty tight definition but I do remember an awful lot of us in that lecture room sitting very low in our seats for the next 40 minutes.....

I will play devils advocate here and say that I disagree with the thread heading "the message just isnt getting through, is it"
Yes it is, the message is clearly gotten through to everyones heads the issue is those same heads simply.............Dont CARE
and why should they ? whats the consequences of getting caught?

Perhaps putting adverts on TV showing young drunk drivers losing their lives, when such people are already out drinking and driving, is not targeting the right audience.
Image if they'd had room for even more alcohol.

As I get older that statement is a good one, but try telling that to me when I was going through the 18 to 21 stage.
I actually think that the drink driving thing has now become a bit of a challenge to a lot of the young ones now, other than just trying to get home after a skinfull as it was in my day.
Could be wrong but its a feeling is all.

But the ... "That wont happen to me .... I drive better when I'm pissed/they wont catch ME" syndrome comes into play after a few drinks, and a good time is being had by all.

Yup! They all know they're "not supposed to do it" but they literally do not care and figure the chance of getting caught because they will be "driving just fine and won't crash" is minimal and worth the risk. Add mates sho encourage it and it's a no brainer!
Well overdue for the judges tothrow the book at a few of them, then the message might sink in. Lose their car and licence on the first offence for a start! No excuse to say they didn't know or thaought they were under the limit as that guarantees they will repeat until they do lose it.

Exactly, they've never had to face any meaningful consequence for their action so far in their lives - why worry about it now??
And they are the same people that feel they 'deserve' the right to drink in a pub at 18 or buy booze at the bottle store at 18 'because if we can vote at 18 and fight for our country (like any of them ever have!) at 18 we should be allowed to drink at 18'
Beat THAT for logic.
But then they get tetchy when I suggest 18 should be the drvers licence age too- somehow to them its 'not fair':scratch:

Perhaps ... raising the legal age of all of the above to 21 ...
see if that changes anything. :innocent:
Would probably result in kids still living at HOME :gob: ... with their parents 'till then ... :shifty:

Then couple this with the latest on groups of marauding thieving antisocial gangs of girls terrorising Porirua, wtf next? I don't mean to sound like all girls should necessarily be angelic manifestations of goodness and virtue etc. but to be determined to excel and outdo others in destructive behaviour like this is taking "equality" to an all time low.
