View Full Version : Wellington: BRONZ - Tuesday night learner/restricted rides

Ratti
12th September 2010, 20:05
Leaving from Avalon DuckPond 6pm during daylight saving weeks.

An accompanied ride for riders on learners and restricted licenses. The emphasis will be on hazard awareness, learning to ride in a group and acquiring general on-road time. ATGATT is expected to be worn.

Routes will be suited to 70 and 80kph limits and should take approximatly 1-1.5 hours. I envisage L-platers and restricted riders setting off in separate groups accompanied by a group leader and at least 1 TEC. Returning riders would be very welcome and can fit into whichever pack they feel most comfortable.

We will be aiming for a park or similar space for discussion then back to the Duckpond where we will disperse and make our way to wherever we need to be.

While they will be co-ordinated by me, I am open to requests to vary the route based on the needs of the riders present on the evening.

Experienced riders will be very welcome, and will be put to work as a group leader or a TEC. Please consider coming along on a suitable bike and sharing your hard-earned knowledge with the newbies. If this sounds like you, then can you pm me and let me know you want to help us?

Feel free to offer suggestions for routes and ask me for further information.

This ride is sanctioned by BRONZ Wellington ( I am a committe member) as a way of sharing our knowledge base and actively promoting personal responsibiliy in riding. I must make very clear that I am ONLY the co-ordinator, not a mentor or instructor. All riders participate at their own risk.

Well done Ratti for taking the initiative and keeping the Tuesday rides in the weekly program of ride options.

This sets the platform here in Wellington for Learners and Restricted riders. I hope to see other initiatives being undertaken in Wellington for Full licenced riders that perhaps may only ride on the weekends and/or are perhaps riders returning after a long spell away from motorcycles.

Some of the entities that form the Motorcycle Safety Levy - MSL Establishment Group, in particular BRONZ, Ulysses and NZTA I would like to think may become constructively involved here in greater Wellington region coordinating training days, providing professional instructors and also calling upon volunteer trained motorcycle mentors.

You've stuck your neck out girl, and it's a kiss from me and not a punch.

That's a point Buck Buck, returning riders may also feel comfortable participating in this ride. No pressure to hurry, just enjoy a quiet ride and get used to being on a bike again.

I will be coming along as often as I can too Faith, just couldn't commit to running them as I feel I do not have enough experince to justify it. But will happily lead when needed, and also tail at the end.

These rides helped me out greatly as a learner, and I made some very good friends out of it now, and we have all progressed along together very well.

Will see you at the first one, and will try to make it most weeks.

Good on ya Faith, sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Confirming these pootles will start next Tuesday.
Eugene and I are sorting out the routes on Sunday. Anyone wanting to help or offer constructive suggestions can wander in to my house for lunch.
Due to BRONZ committee committments, the ride on the FIRST TUESDAY of each month will be a Hutt Valley Urban Route, leaving Avalon Duckpond at 6 on the dot. It's possible they will finish at the Parrot and Jigger at the BRONZ meeting, or else someone apart from me will escort the groups back to the Duckpond while I do a slow, dignified dash to the meeting.

FZR1000 for $2000, needs a few small things like tyres, warrant, rego but not too much more than that, however i dont think the seating position will be very appropriate for ya.

The off was very teeny..very very teeny. Broke his bikes brake lever tho..

As I said, once one reaches a certain age..it hurts like *bleeeeep* and takes a lot longer to get mobile than it used to. Bruises have been colourful if nothing else.

Hey Ratbag...

Just a thought - last season we left the duckpond at 6.30pm. It seems there may be a few of us that work through until 6pm most weeks, and may not be able to make it there for a 6pm depature?

I will try my bestest for getting there on time next week, but it's a real battle getting out of here before 6pm.

Avalon to Eastbourne: eastbourn via riverside drive
Here's the route the Lovely Eugene and I sorted out for you. er..there was meant to be a link to a google map, but it has failed ( probably I have failed if Im honest. Eugene? HEEELP )

We will try a couple of ways of organising riders on the night.
This week we are intending to do small groups. Have a learner or 2 with an experienced rider as lead and a TEC.

This will be what to expect...pay attention. I vill zay zis only vonce.

Be there as close to 6 as possible, we leave at 6.30 on the dot.
Find me and introduce yourself and let me know your ability level. Learner? Confidant? Experienced?
As you come in, I will sort you into groups. Hang out , introduce yourselves. Sort out just how much experience your learner has. It's going to vary hugely from nervous first timer to some who ought really to have full licenses. And very importantly, make sure you can recognise each others bikes and gear. This is so you can stay together..none of this getting lost that happend far to often last season.

Eugene will probably be overall LR. DO NOT PASS HIM

At intersections, and changes of direction, we need markers. First group after Eugene stops and waits for the last group to ride through then falls in in front of TEC. I'll be final TEC this week and am really hard to miss...really hard!

We will re-group at Days bay then again at the end of the Eastbourne road. At that stage we will sort out who wants to ride over the hill to Wainui with Eugene and they can set off at their own pace. Anyone who does not want to go over the hill can come with me back to the Duckpond.

The main focii for these nights are
1. hazard awareness - talk to your learners about speed bumps, intersections, staying on the correct side of the centre line and anything else s/he is concerned with.
2. learning to ride in a group. Look out for each other, maintain 4 bike lengths between learners and experienced riders, please give yourselves and the rider in front of you room to muck things up.

Bossy eh? Yup and I make no apology for it. These rides are aimed at LEARNERS, teach 'em awareness and skills and they will live to ride with us again.
If you find the pace too sedate, then you need to join a different group of riders.

Cheers. See you tomorrow.

p.s Im really excited at the thought of daylight saving rides again. They are so much fun and I have met some of the nicest folk on them!

29th September 2010, 19:56
As rides went...it covered just about everything that could have gone wrong.
And just about everything I like about the wonderful world of motorcycling!

As turnouts go, it was ok. 3 learners turned up and a fair few experienced riders keen to help out.So far so good...but wait! This is where it gets interesting

We lost a learner and our overall RL before we even left the Duckpond,,that's gotta be a first.
Lost another learner due to acute pain from a prior injury.
Got lost ( my fault...ahem )
then decided to split up as we only had one learner left. So one pair headed off into the sunset, one pair up the coast and a trio over the hill and out to coast. Im hoping the other groups were ok, we found our RL on the way back so all were accounted for in the end.

If you are a learner considering coming along, dont muck around , DO IT.

As last night illustrated, should anything go wrong, we will help. Mechanical failure, escort home, pick up strays on the side of the road, wait for slow riders. The great thing about riders is that as a rule we help each other.

Good stuff folks. Look forward to seeing you next week.

Good On Ya & Congrats Ratti, on an eventful night, might not have been in the script but for a stage debut you can be very pleased. Your assistance to the rider with the flat tyre was truly outstanding.

And as Ratti said:

meet from 6. leave at 6.30.

First part of the route is the same as last week, along Riverside Dr. From there along the Parade to the Petone wharf.
I have to zip off to the BRONZ meeting at that point and the remainder can either return to the Duckpond with one of the experienced riders or tackle the Korokoro road, along the top of the ridge stopping at Belmont Park to discuss issues arising, and down Belmont. Along the motorway and back to the Duckpond or elsewhere. Im really hoping we dont lose eugene again as I do not know that route, only been over it the once and that was in a howling gale and misty rain.

I believe the BRONZ meeting tomorrow is commitee only, otherwise I'd invite everyone along to hear what we are about.

Look forward to seeing you all tomorrow night.

Hi Folks. Have been giving this ride some serious thought. After feedback from the folk who came home with me after this weeks ride, I am sure we have come up with some improvements.

1. we need to break the ride partway into it to talk over habits and issues arising during the first part.

2. We need to finish the ride at a place where we can sit around and talk about the ride and generally socialise a bit.

3. We desperatly need very experienced riders to accompany each set of learners.

so...

with this in mind I propose a re-run of the Bays ride for next Tuesday with a few changes.

We will leave from the Duckpond as usual and head left and over into Naenae. Along Oxford Tce ( or is it Cambridge? ) to Gracefield and then right around th ebig roundabout onto The Esplanade. Regroup at Settlers Museum. This route is to avoid a messy bit of th ehighway. From there we will break into groups and tackle the highway to the Ngauranga turnoff. Regroup again very briefly at the service station. From there we will play follow the leader around and meet the Town folk along the Parade. I think the carpark just around the corner from TePapa close to the kiddies playground would do the deed.Hopefully there will be empty spots we can claim. From there we will head around Bays to Island Bay, then inland to Basin McD's where will will take over the place and have a social and de-brief session before dispersing for home.

A few issues I noted from this week-
I am not happy at the speed we went into town, Lplaters are on a 70k limkit and that is the speed I expect us to travel.
There was a bit of a hiccup at one point with lane changes at the lights and taking off in front of a car once the light was green. While that manouvre is easy and safe for experienced riders, with a long tail of learners it is better not to go there. We will just wait in line and take our turn as it happens.

As a plus, I am pleased to note comments from you that input from experienced riders is useful. Hats off to Bryce and Mark for taking time to help out. We can really use more riders with years of riding behind them to accompany these rides.
Many thanks to the newer riders who stepped in to take on TEC and RL roles, I know you dont have the hours on road to take this on, but Im very grateful to you for giving it a shot.

Have revised the route slightly to keep out if the 100k zone as much as possible and still keep fairly together. See post further up this page for route.

If the weather goes to custard then we will still ride but it will be a shorter ride around the Hutt and we will meet at High St KFC for social and talk about riding.

I'm reluctant to do the Bays tonight because of the wind.

I'd like to try a spot of offroad loose surface riding tonight. In and out of the loose surface riverbank roads. Start at Pond and work our way up river to SIlverstream and then on and off highway back down the western side of the river. And then to HIghSt KFC for afters.

We will leave 6.30 from the Pond and head up river along Harcourt Wherry. If you miss us, you will at least be heading in the right direction to find us again.

Do you think gravel riding might be a bit too challenging in reducing light and if it has been raining and with learners in tow as well?

Gotta learn somehow I guess :innocent: . Those who never try do not succeed :violin:

Ratti
20th October 2010, 07:28
It wasn't gravel. Just a loose surface with small potholes and a few puddles. AS it turned out we only had 2 guys with restricted license come along to play. We found it straightforward and just plain fun.

The rain held off until the home stretch and wind was not the problem it would have been on the Bays ride.

Had an embarrassment of senior riders to help. To the point where two elected to go home rather than accompany the ride ( thanks Gavin and Mark. Hope to see you next week )

The final route took us along Harcourt Wherry, down onto the riverbank access track and up onto seal again further north. From there we went out the back of Trentham Camp, up along Whitemans Valley to Maymorn and then back down the highway and along the access tracks on the western side. These sections were very ably led by Byron and Eugene.

I was especially pleased to note the lead riders followed the pace of the slowest rider this week. These outings simply MUST be ridden according to the ability/confidance of the less experienced riders.

Back to my house for coffee and talk afterward. During this time we discussed problems arising on the ride and what can be done to improve this route next time we do it. One rider mentioned that he'd like to do more playing on loose surfaces. Specifically, tight turns, stops and starts and U-turns. I will attempt to include this next time.

I'm unsure as yet where we are heading next Tuesday. Bryce mentioned hill starts and suggested the area up toward the Wind turbine would be a good place to head. Input from learners about what you need to practice to get the next stage of your license would be welcome. These rides are for you, make use of the many years of on-road experience the senior riders have accumulated.

Come over next week. There is a father/son team that is over your way. They might be willing to ride over with you. take your time and you'll be fine. There are two women on this side of the hill who ought really to be coming on Tuesdays..maybe a little pressure applied and I might be able to get them here for you to meet.

MIght even consider doing the Whitby loop as next weeks run if you like.

Ratti
26th October 2010, 12:19
We will do the Whitby loop tonight.
Meet at Pond at usual time.
Over the Haywards in groups of 2-3 learners with a Senior LR. This is so cars have room to pass without having to overtake a long line of slow riders.
Re-group at Bradley's Bay car park. Anyone from over the hill can wait for us at that point and join us for the remainder of the ride.
Turn left up Postgate Rd, then right at the BP. Follow our noses to the Aotea Lagoon. Ride along the lagoon road, then onto the main road and up to McD's at Mana. We will stop there for a time to eat, drink and talk riding.
Back along the north side of the Pauatahanui Inlet.
Turn left and head along to Battlehill Farm. At that stage anyone who wants to continue over the Paekak Hill can head off and do their own thing. The rest of us will turn around and go back to Pauatahanui then left over the Haywards.
Final meeting point will be either my house or Petone McD's for coffee.

LIght rain will not cause cancellation but howling wind sure will!

Fingers crossed folks and look forward to seeing you tonight.

An incident free ride with 3 L plates and an R license. Ably accompanied by 4 senior riders.
The road was good, just challenging enough for the L Platers. We only lost one bunch at an intersection, but found them shortly after that.

The break at McD's was timely, a few calories and we were away feeling much more onto it.

Socialising is as much a part of these rides as the actual on-road time. It's been great meeting such a wide range of people.

Thanks to All who make the effort to make these rides a success.

Next weeks ride will be the Riverside Dr to Eastbourne route. I'll be dropping out at Gracefeild as BRONZ has a public meeting that night at the Parrot and Jigger at 7. (Anyone can come along if you are curious to see what we are about.) The route will finish at the Petone McD's. We will need a few extra senior riders to assist as most of the regulars will be at the meeting. If you've thought about it then this is the night we need you!

cheers

Hey Kazza... You will love these rides! A perfect ride for learners and restricted licenses, with a wonderful bunch of people. Yes yes yes. Do come along. They are vey low key, low threat rides. Anyone who tries and do dumb stuff gets told off by Aunti Ratti...

We seen ya on tuesday Katie...standing by the side of the road. *giggle*

This weeks ride will take us around Upper Hutt. Byron is leading us through Blue Mountain road ( or there abouts ) and we will do the riverbank tracks for a bit of fun on a looser surface. I promise it is very easy. Take your time there is no hurry or pressure on less experienced riders. That's the point of these rides, you feel safe to experiment and learn a bit along the way.
Just quietly, the senior riders are getting as much out of it as anyone. A whole new way of riding when one is in charge, always something new to learn in motorcycling. No-one knows it all- EVER

Fabulous night for a quiet cruise around the Bays. Only real hazard tonight was cyclists taking up the lines we wanted to take on the corners. They have as much right to the road as us tho, so it was a case of altering the way we ride to give them room. No aggro and everyone seemed to enjoy it.

I'm also in Whitby so probably just around the corner from you. I'd be quite happy to give you some pointers if Ratti isn't available when you want to ride.

Hey Hawkeye and Ratti!
I am keen as!!! I am suprised you have seen me around Ratti! I would like to have been on my bike more often, but that was hard over the holidays with the kids. Any Monday would be great with me to go on that Pre ride. Call me/text me/PM me....
Hawkeye, I am on Longitude place. I would love to catch up with you too. But you do understand that I am an "L" plater? So 70 is my official limit and I do tend to stick with that. I am just keen to get out and about with people who know what they are about and have the patience to kindly point out where I can make improvements. Ratti did a great job! I want to go for my restricted as soon as possible and would love someone to tell me if that will work out for me or if I still have along way to go.
Pm me too if you are keen on an evening ride. I know I am!

Thanks! You know what I just love about this whole new adventure in my life? The community! It is just awesome. I doubt that there is any other hobby/sport which would surpass this community! Thanks guys. I am so pleased I made the effort to get my motorbike licence. Hawkeye, I left you a pm with my details...

I iwllput everyone's mind at easy over Hawkeye's ego! It fitted perfectly on his big bike! hahahah, no honest, I went for a ride with him today. It was AWESOME!!! He definitely took me out of my comfort zone by going to Makara on the gravel and in the rain. BUt it was so worth it. Was given some great tips. Help with my tyre pressure....It was great! I hope I was good enough for a second date Hawkeye! I will shout you a coffee next time! We'll stop somewhere where it is not raining!

It was my pleasure Anita. You done very well and as you said, that gravel will have taken you out of your comfort zone. That and the constant mist fogging the visor. All part of the leaning curve.
Just keep getting on the bike whenever you can. The more time you spend on it, the more comfortable you will get. Just send me a text if you're going out and if I'm free, I'll be happy to join you.
We will get you over the Rimutaka's one day (soon - when it's not so misty) and we can catch up with Quasi and maybe Katiepie and Ducatigirl will join us.

Yep... Quasi, Ducatigril and myself would love to take Anita out for a ride some time soon. No rush to get over those takas girl.. the first few times are very nerve racking. Then, over time, you learn to love them, and need them, and dream about them. Oops - did I just say that out loud?

Sounds like you are doing really well, that's great to hear. For all of us girls, motorcycling has completely changed our worlds, and for the better. Now got life long friends and confidence some of us would never have imagined we could have.

As hawkeye mentioned.. its all about more time on your 2 wheels. The more you get out there, the more you will start to settle into it ill. Heck - we are forever settling into it, I have been on my grown up bike for 8 months now... still very much settling into it. LOOOOVE the whole process.

I so love this whole community! Katiepie, Quasi, Hawkeye, Eyegasm....all of you! It is so good to know that by taking on this new phase in my life I have gotten to know so many people. So many excellent kiwis who are just there to help out and encourage. It is so nice! Eyegasm, all good mate....I am pretty loose! Will go out with anyone! hahahahaha. Truely though, if anyone is willing to take me on, then I would love to go out with them! Thanks everyone. Hoping to meet everyone else on this forum in person. I have even plucked up courage after yesterday to go forn another ride even if it is raining!!! Thanks Hawkeye!

I hear the Makara run was a success.
I propose a Hutt run around Whitemans Valley and back down the Motorway to Petone McD's for a social get together.

Thanks to everyone who turned up last week. Apologies if you were late and then couldnt find us. Change of plan decided among the riders on the day. As these are social rides, it's the way it goes ! Still, nice blat over to the Coast, interesting ride with the wind on the way back.sheesh!

I'm keen to do the Hutt Route this week, so I want to try again on Tuesday. head over into Whitemans Valley, up to Maymorn and then back down to McD in Petone. Slow or nervous riders, the first bit is a challenge, but take your time and dont let anyone push you along. I'll be right at the back with Ducky and we are happy to chug along at 30kph if that's what you need to do.

see you after 5.30pm. Leaving at 6.30 on the dot...

Is that Whitemans via Blue Mountain or in from Wallaceville ?

Ratti
12th February 2011, 18:12
dont ask hard questions Baldy. SImple answer is, buggered if I know. We start from the Pond and head up the Valley, turn right, over the hills and far away. Then we end up home again.

Stain or Eyegasm will know, it's the route with the windy bit at the start of the hill climb.

well! Last nights ride proved to be a challenge.
1. lost the rest of the group, they went one way and I went the right way.
2. rain made the road very slippery.
3. the road from J'ville to Makara has been chopped up and re sealed, but the surface is very uneven.

Combine the above with Ducky's useless cornering and the tightness of the curves out that way and I had some serious problems staying upright.
Sounds like Bryce on his chookchaser was the only one who didnt notice the conditions. Although he did mention his intention to make a note to himself to wear boots UNDER his trousers when it rains as he had water sloshing around in his gaerne's.

All in all a sucessful night from my perspective. challenging and everyone suceeded in the stated mission. Excellent!

Thanks to those who turned out on a soggy evening. See you next week.

Sorry hon, had a friend turn up unexpectedly and spent the day shopping instead! ( priorities! )

I believe Bryce took everyone and played in the loose surface along the riverbank last week. havent heard anything contrary, so assuming it went well...Emilio????

If the weather holds, lets head up to the turbine tomorrow night. Who's up for hill starts?

good to see you Gavin. Very smart in your shiny new leathers.

Gorgeous view from the hill the turbine sits on. lots of laughs as we negotiated the ..er...interesting corners on the way up. Welly sure does hills very successfully. And so do Welly riders for that matter.

Only a few more outings for this season people, running out of time of socialise and talk bikes and stuff in the sunshine.
Must be due to head out along the coast road again, let's make that the route for next week, then back to McD Petone for afters.

Ok, the "scout" ride was to find a great ride for the Tuesday evening group. That one was lost obviously. Never mind Cheshirecat! And for the record, I have a very non droll Honda Vtwin!
Hawkeye, I would be delighted to go for another ride with you too as long as it will not upset all the other guys on the kb site! I loved the last ride and would be very happy to go out again. But as you said, either I get busy or the weather does not want to play ball! Let me know if you are going for a ride!

tomorrows weather forecast promises rain and strong winds so I think it's best to cancel the evenings entertainment.
