Apparently some guy was shooting at people up Don Bucks Rd way about 10.25am when I was riding north up the NW M'way and got pulled over by HP Police and told to wait for a few minutes cos I may be a likely target? I was the only one he pulled over btw, the cop said he was also a motorcyclist. He suggested taking a detour off at Royal Rd...so I did.
Just heard on the radio that there's been a shooting at St Lukes and there is a Armed Offenders callout, police chase down the NW M'Way and blocking off of on/off ramps. The offender may have elderly hostages with him?
Hmmm not good at all for a Sunday morning!
[Edit:]From the 11.00am news - High speed car hijack has ended without any injuries! One shot was fired at St Lukes and a car was hijacked which contained 3 people who effectively became hostages.
Police were shot at during the pursuit which has ended with an arrest. :niceone:

Some of the drivers had full black head gear on! Quite exciting really.
I had a look on the TradeMe message board - someone was following it with a scanner.Maori gang member with 3 Asian hostages shooting at Police cars - looks like they all came past my place, but I was watching all the Cop cars, not what they were chasing.3rd chopper was TV News, typical eh,it's getting likr the States now.

This might be slightly off topic, but what is happening to Auckland??? Had some family friends (in their 50's) that had their car hi-jacked from Epsom on Friday night. Two young men, hijacked their car when they got home. The husband was punched and ended in hospital. Not good. Just thought I would share what has been happening.
NZ is slowly but surely loosing our image as a Pure, Clean, Green and Friendly nation in the pacific. Very sad.

7 years for pinching a car.

Potentially about 50 years worth if convicted and if the judiciary had any balls. But it won't happen!

OK lets rack our brains here a bit...
How long did the guy get for kidnapping Donna Hall's baby a few years ago... wasnt it only a couple of years....?
So this dude will only get a couple of years in prison.... for hi-jacking a car, Kidnapping 3 people, shooting at police and the general public and all the other charges thrown at him.
If all he gets is a few years in jail.. then it suxs...
If say one of the elderly couple dies from this incident, as they went into shock and they looked really old, then throw a 'manslaughter' charge at him as well.
Its time the judges stopped being "soft cocks" when handing down sentences.
Time to be damn tough of these guys... The dude already has his 'patch' and has 'proved' his worth to his gang in the past... so its time to teach these gang members that enough is enough.
My daughter was in the area that he was firing shots at.. and had to also come back down the nor-western motorway to get home... at any time when this maniac was firing shots he could have hit her or any other member of the public.
No more excuses, he is responsible for his own actions.
We have to stop the courts allowing him to say that 'P' or being bashed up as a kid or abused or any other excuse... He is a adult, and must face the consquences of HIS actions... only he did it.. nothing else.
I, too am sick of the crime rate in NZ. Sick and tired of criminals only getting a slap on the hand for serious crimes.
Time for Fart to vote a government that will be serious about reducing crime and restructuring the police force. I will vote the party that will dramatically increase the punishment for serious crime and firing the current police commissioner and minister of police.

Nobody has yet said WHAT the cops fired at, we'll just have to wait and see. (maybe somebody had a deadly looking golf-club??)
Wish it was Clint Eastwood, would love to say "I know what you're thinking punk, did I fire 16 shots or 17? feeling lucky?"

Who can say? It depends on the Judge. There needs to be a great deal more cumulative sentences for multiple serious offences. These arseholes know that when they go nuts like this they are unlikely to get a cumulative sentence and spend a large part of their life behind bars.

I think it was just a carjack. He wanted their car, and pressed them into service as hostages and driver.
His own car was tracked down into the car park and surrounded, and he made a break on foot. then grabbed the first car and passengers he saw.
I keep running into people effected by it - my mech was the last car on the motorway,he saw all these Cop cars behind him doing a road block.Had a Skyline in yesterday - he was pulled over and hauled out of the car and his car searched.I remember commenting at the time when all the cars went past that maybe it was a training exercise because they were all going so slow for such a big emergency....

The cost replace the hijacked car .. $5,000
The cost of police chase ... $30,000
Getting 25 years or more for hijacking a car cos you needed a ride..... PRICELESS.

"The man charged with kidnapping a Chinese family following a 45-minute hostage drama and dramatic police chase in Auckland has reappeared in court.
Meanwhile, police have confirmed that while they were dealing with the hostage drama on June 5, they received a tip-off about a potentially major incident at the SkyCity Casino.
The Herald understands that the major incident was a gang-initiated robbery and that the hostage situation was a decoy to distract officers from the activity at the casino. Police spokeswoman Noreen Hegarty said officers investigating the tip-off concluded it was a rumour, but SkyCity was alerted about the situation in case."
