Boom trike

Howzit, I'm not sure if this is the correct thread to be posting this under, but I just thought that I would share my new trike with you guy's. It's a Boom Family 7i Muscle series, built in Germany with a Ford Duratec (Focus) 1600cc motor. At present, I'm doing guided tours with it in Cape Town.

Are trikes popular in NZ? In South Africa, you don't see too many of them, apart from the occasional home-made one, which is in most cases nice from far, but far from nice.

Very nice. Haven't seen anything like that in NZ, but there are a few trikes around.

I don't understand trikes that have more than 2 seats.

I mean what is the point? - buy a convertible sedan.

1-2 seat trikes though are quite lovely.

Guy's, do not believe for one minute that trikes are boring and that they are "old man" toys. They are HUGE fun!!! This particular trike handles like you will not believe...in corners it sits like shit on a wet blanket. In a straight line at 170km/h, it's as stable as it is at 60km/h. I spend 90% of the time riding with one hand only. It pulls lovely from a traffic light as well. The only two drawbacks of a trike are: you sit in traffic...but at least you do it in style, and you don't have that grunt that you get from a bike, but otherwise it's fantastic to ride. My previous trike was a home-made contraption...you cannot compare the two!!! Boom have been building trikes for 20 years now, so I reckon they have mastered the art of trike building.

The reason I bought the two seater is because I am using the trike as a source of income by doing tours on it in Cape Town, otherwise I might have bought a single seater.

My Shadow is getting triked now - nearly finished - can have the dog on the back then. There are regular Sunday rides here in Northland - Kiwi Trikers are a large group that they are part of.

You make a interesting point re sitting in traffic that I'd never considered with a trike - you are so low down at time you must be sucking in exhaust fumes!


Trikes are an odd thing in NZ - there are a percentage of mint ones that are well engineered and extremely good looking machines.

Then there is the larger percentage of 'home-grown' units that look very backyard. The thing with these ones that I don't get is that they NEVER get finished - you'll see the same trike year after year looking like it needs a tear down and completion.

And there is the V8 trike. Generally made from welded together pieces of railway track bent around the biggest engine they could find, add on the widest rear tyres available then they hire the local car-wash and replace the water in it with matt black paint and ride the trike through it - presto finished!

OK - I have seen a few clean V8 trikes (saw a Corvette one recently) but they are the exception.

Good to see you making a $ out of something you enjoy too - good idea and with a view like in the image it should be a hoot.

big , small V8, Vtwin, Flat four
Of course that has to be an XS1100
Its all a mater of taste.
And dont belive that all trikes are slow
or cant handle the road as good as or if not better than bikes. depends as per usual on th ride
