geez...i think what Marty is trying to get across is that motorcyclists are having lots of accidents, some are being killed. Almost everyday - not that I read the paper in every district - someone is involved in a motorcycle accident, the police, the government are trying to find a way to reduce the incidents.

Maybe the Waikato Police are getting sick of out-of towners coming down to their patch and causing them unecessary work. Believe me - I would rather have had a quiet chat to a number of bikers at Kopu and given them a heads up about road condition, traffic, and enforcement on the loop, than have to chat to their NOK over a hospital bed, mortuary slab, or at coroners court.

Really awful - what a horrible way to die - alone and unnoticed.
He has since been named in the media and next of kin notified. Only 32 years old. Terrible.

Ditto that.
He may have had only minor injuries and could have died from drowning.
Post Mortem will establish the facts, but that is not a nice way to go.

I just read the update on this story. What a horrible way to start the week. It makes me realise how lucky I am to have my partner who had come off his bike and was found in a ditch. To this day i still thank the people who pulled over to see what the light in the ditch was. I hope he may R.I.P. My deepest condolences to this family.

Nix Myth and his band of worriers were off to Australia a few weeks back to find out how Victoria managed to reduce their bike fatalities by 20%.More legislation to come methinks.
RIP rider.

Incredibly sad indeed. How about we all get a bit more proactive about these things and actually report bad roads? If they dont know how bad they are, they cant fix them. If they do know how bad they are and wont then we shame them.
I for one, am sick of councils and roading authorities ignoring the impact of piss poor roads on bikers safety! I strongly urge both of you, and anyone else you know, or who reads this to take a personal action and start loggong these bad roads. We have to take positive action ourselves.

Here here on reporting roads. The council just about knows me on a first name basis now!
Unfortunately, the councils don't seem to care due to the changeover of councils to the Super City. Nevermind, the Super City concil will get to know me on a first name basis too!

Reporting poor road conditions is all well and good but, ultimately it's up to us as motorcyclists to ride to the road's condition.

you could pretty much say the majority of NZ roads are crap!
councils only have so much revenue to spend on roading and unless the ratepayers are prepared for a substantial increase in their rates, where is the money gonna come from?
You have to ride to changing conditions and within your abilities folks.

Quite right Katman. However, at times the road condtiions are very poor and not easily seen. As was the case with friends of mine, whom only travel at the speed limit, and ended up writing off their brand new beema, due to not seeing the road clearly due to trees and sunlight etc. So therefore, it can be up to us to report these sort of things prior to this happening to some other poor sole, especially this chappy who died. :done:

The guy who built The Smashed Pippi in Mangawhai crashed his bike in a ditch and died a year or so ago.Should have ridden to the conditions too.He must have been pedalling like a maniac.

Trees and sunlight???? Surely this comes under rider conditions. Doubt very much if there would be trees actually on the road...would i be right!

Come on now - I admit I am a hypocrite at times, but FFS - you have passed comment on many a bike accident and not known for sure what happened.
Keep it real - you're reducing the credibility of your message with your methods.

I think it can be a bit ghoulish on here at times, but ultimately I'd rather people were talking about accidents so that there is some chance their subconcious might remind them that it could be them next when they're winding it on.

Good Points... do ya think they could spend more on roads, and education, and employ the people on the dole, supervised by engineers and the like to fix the roads, no they would rather just fork out the money to the unemployed. In Denmark and many other countries you have to work for the dole!

Interesting to see this thread degenerate into one on road conditions.
Speaking from experience, the Kaitokes (the roads that lead up to the Rimutaka Hill Road in North Wellington - Upper Hutt) used to be in rather poor condition and people complained about it.
They rebuilt the roads, and the first comments made on this site about it were about how disappointing it was that they'd turned a technical 80km/hr road into 100km/hr sweepers which could be easily taken at over 200.
My point is that the Kaitokes used to set you up quite nicely for the 'takas and now there's a very quick and smooth road which sets you up for an extremely technical road.
This means that there have been a few accidents where people initially hit the 'takas and they're not prepared.
Yes our roads could be better. But in general most riders take into account the road condition and I for sure would take sunstrike into account if it happened and slow the hell down as my visibility would be affected. Paekakariki Rd for example is a perfect illustration of where sun through trees causes havoc with your sightlines.
I'm not saying ANY of this contributed to this poor fellow's accident. I have no idea what happened. What happened to him is a sad but unfortunately all too common occurence.
