I second the Yamaha XS650 twin,
massive amounts of parts availabile, new and used,
good strong mtr that looks and sounds good,
lots of them already done so that you can get ideas on what to do.

I'm doing a shovel bobber now followed by a triumph bobber and then a 51pan I think I have it covered, what about a w650 kawasaki even has a kickstart I had one but sold it so I could buy the pan and the man has made it into a cafe racer, here's a couple of pic's of the shovel.

The flyrite double engine norton is for sale and is not badly priced for the amount of work that went into it.

Don't complain! Give me the shovel if is 2 much for you! Hahaahahhaha...
I built a Sporster from ground up and I know... 4 years of tears and pain and unbelievable joy.
Now, I'm older so I kinda know what to do to the bike so I can ride it 2! I'm not a mechanic and I can't afford a bike and a bar-hopper so is tricky to have a bike looking like a bobber and riding like a tourer. But I.m trying wit my Softail!
Anyway Doug, make a thread with photos of your projects for us to enjoy
Cheers

I would consider a old r series bmw. google rockerboxer and you will find a website full of customized air cooled bwm twins. mainly cafe style but some bobbers.
they are simple to strip, frames are ok as is but also easy to hardtail, parts are available and cheap from motobins in the UK and they arrive in about a week.
they are very easy to work on and extremely reliable. they last forever.
google cadbike 33 for one of the nicest bobbers I have seen, this bike took about 3 years though and an incredible amount of talent.
