Easy a BMW R75/5.... all day every day flat out, electric start, 50 mpg, tls front brake, good handling, versatile, from the autobahns to old Roman roads in Turkey, commuting in London traffic, lugging a sidecar loaded with camping gear...well thats how I remember mine....should get it back together as rego is cheap.
and you can retro fit disc brakes and bigger cylinders of the mid 70's models.

Something pre 1930, British, > 500cc, rigid frame with girder forks

(or maybe a Hog or Indian from the same period)

pretty much the same as what Avgas wants

Why not look around now for a 1970 - 74 bike while the prices are low, there are some good ones out there to be had for sencibile prices. I am sure that anything pre 1970 has had the price jacked because of its age and cheaper rego.
So why a bike up to 10 years away from that rego rull?
Well the first thing to do is put it on rego hold,
then plan the time between now and when it reaches the "required" age to strip and restore the bike back to as close a condition as it was new, or to a state of modification that you want.
So that when you get to regster it, its ready to be ridden, looks fantastic, has increased in value beyond what you paid for it, and you know how good it is.
I have to wait 9 years for my Yamaha XS1100's to be in that time frame,
But I have my eyes on an earier Yamaha XS650 TX-A that I might just turn into a bobber.
It is is a 1972 model,so by the time it is built, it will be the cheap rego, and will look great with the later model XS650 parts used to enhance its performance.

or the kids who liked throwing stones and rolling tyes out on the road....:eek5:.....or the kids who tried to slashed the tyres because I didn't want my boots polished.....;)
Great trip, and if I was doing it again I'd concider the R75/5 .....no electronics and you can take it apart witht the tool kit under the seat, did a gearbox swap outside Motobin shop in the high street....good times.

1969 H1 Kawasaki...or maybe an A7SS, which is as fast, point to point and a little less homocidal! Has to be a stroker, though........

When I looked at the OP I thought, "Hell NO!" Then I saw the picture of the 7R....

To own something like that you either need to be an expert mechanic or independently wealthy though. I'm neither.

Another 5 to 10 years the list expands fast.
30 years seems a bit harsh and must be up the top end of years to wait for vintage classification compared with other countries.

From memory every one I knew as a teen had road legal Honda xl's of nearly every cc and condition, I'm not sure if its the bike I'm fond of or the fun we had with them though.

What do you want it for and how much pain are you willing to put up with?

Most late 60's bikes can be pretty good but its usually up to you to make em good again ;-)

Triumph 650's are a damn good choice BUT be careful, there are some dreadful wrecks being offered as good runners etc....

Is it 30 years or 40 years for vintage rego?
If 30, my GS1100G will qualify in 2012 - and its going to tale that long to get it going again.
otherwise, well it can wait a bit longer.

Hmmmmm I wonder if you could just get a newish bike, scrape all the name and stuff off it, and rego it as old.

e.g. the 1967 Hillman 500 (GB500)

or put some copper piping in it etc steampunk it.

e.g. the 1935 Davidson 250 (TU250)

.......the mind does wander on to such possibilities. We should do this to to Frosty's GN!!!!

Yeah I have seen that one on trademe...it's in good nic, and would leave something like that as stock standard. There is another cb500 on trademe that has had the cafe treatment.

For me if I was going to cafe a CB it would have to be the CB400 sport or a CB350/360
The twins do look better as a cafe compared to an IL4 (imho)

It's 30 years to be classed as a "Classic".

FYI in case anyone is mildy interested, these are the classes but not sure how they relate to rego....I assume anything over 30 years is the same price

Veretan up to 1919
Vintage 1920-1930
Pre War 1931-1944
Post War 1945 onwards
Classic applies anything 30 years old or over

for vintage rego its a 40 year rolling date, next one is Jan 1 for 1971 models, I think its about $ 130.00 ish,:woohoo:
Also if you join the VCC insurance, is only about $130 a year ( probably limited in KM's to 5000.???)
I see ealy 70's bikes gaining in popularity due to the high cost of rego, I pay full whack on two bikes, and would no longer concider adding another at over $500.00 a year plus insurance.
