Hi all.

I have recently bought a sj50. It needed a bit of work done to the electrics but apart from that it seemed pretty sweet. Now that it's up and running it's pretty crap (pick up wise) until it hits 35kmp/h then it fangs - off the clock at 60kmp/h so not too sure how much it's go in it.

Is there anything that can be done about this?? Has anyone got some possible diagnostics??

I'd just like a bit better pick up, and say able to go 50kms up hill like all the other 2-strokes.

Any help would be much appreciated.

My reccomendation is to get your hands on a GSXR1000. They're farkin awesome at going up hills.

I once saw 247 on the speedo heading up a little bit of a hill on the back wheel.

As much as I would like to that's just not possible for me at the moment. But what would be good, is if you know what's stopping my scooter from doing 50+ uphill?

It's only do 25 - 30 kmp/h at the moment.

I was only fuckin wid ya.

Ummm, has it been derestricted is the first question? The sneaky fuckers put a little restrictor washer in the header pipe of the exhaust from new to make em "Moped" compliant. That'll always slow em down heaps.

must be de restricted if it goes up to 60 at least. is there a local mechanic near you? i dont neccessarily mean the suzuki dealer, but a guy on the corner shop, so if something does need doing to it, he wont charge you an arm and a leg.

Haha I know White trash, I was just fucking with you to :) . OK a litte more info :

I got it cheep as off trademe a month or so ago, it hasn't been on the road since the start of this year (Jan) and just been sitting around. I'm not to sure about its previous history but I don't think it really got any use. The engine seems sweet, starts first pop including kick start. A pretty chur guy on here (hmmmz) help me out big time with the electrics, and also de-restricted it (removed the spacer).

This seems like a similar problem I found on here: http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/30729-Street-Magic-s-lost-its-power

Do you think it could just be clogged?

Riding it around I have noticed acceleration from 0 to 25kmp/h is pretty sluggish (even for scooter standard), but even worse is between 25 - 35 kmp/h which is real bad. But after 35 it's sweet as can feel the 2-stroke powering on haha. If you hit a steepish hill from the bottom at 50 it will slow to 45 and stay there all the way up. But if starting from the bottom it has no balls at all reaching 25 if lucky.

Could changing the rollers help? Or maybe the carbes need a ballance?

If you engine is sweet eg a clean carb, air filter, plug etc then the next area to look at
is the variator. Flat spots on the rollers and a build up of black powder on the ramp plate will stop the variator from moving smoothly a bit like your situation.
There is a big torque spring behind the clutch that can be upgraded to a heavier one if you find it still bogs down when you power on power off power on.
Fresh rollers, a good clean and just a minimum of high temp grease on the centre bush will work wonders...not as good as White Trash's extra 950cc though, in fact the hp of his starter motor alone is probably on par with a legal moped.

If you have changed the clutch springs for heavier ones then you will need to use much lighter rollers or you will have the same problem your having now.

With moped riding you soon learn the art of momentum conservation. LoL

On the bottom of the air box there should be a rubber flap, this is here to stop too much pressure building up in the air box, sounds like yours could be missing making it run lean at low revs. The best way to fix it would be to put some tape over most of the hole, not all or it will lean out on the over run.

hope this helps.
