I am asking this question for a friend of mine, top bloke......
Is there a correct side to have a tattoo on your shoulder? As in, if one were to have only one tattoo, is there a society accepted std? Just that if one were to have the right shoulder done and for instance, stray into the Blue Oyster Club, would one instantly be the new meat on the block? Or is there no ink-sided protocol as there is for earings?

Right handed = right side. They should be on your 'strongest' side.

Got my family crest and motto on my left arm as it was nearer to my heart than my right arm.
Got my tattoo celebrating 25 years of marriage on my right arm as my left arm was taken by my other tattoo.

My advice to him: [edit: or her}
Why do you want to get a tattoo?
For yourself?
For someone else?
What will this tattoo mean to you?
Given that it will mean something to you, where would you put it?
After answering the last question, why the fuck would you put it anywhere else?
Tattoos are personal, and belong exactly where the wearer believes they belong.
Don't do it because you want to impress anyone, or fit in. Only do it if you want to do it, and believe it to be something you want for life, a representation of you.
Recently someone I admire/respect a great deal passed what could be interpreted as a disparaging comment on my tattoos, I looked him straight in the eye and said "I like my tattoos, thank you"
They all mean something to me, and are not there for anyone else's amusement.
If someone is concerned that the tattoo they want might be in a socially unacceptable position, then they aren't ready for a tattoo IMO.
For me, every tattoo has announced itself to me, and told me where it belongs, I don't know if this is true for everyone.

Like any other fashionable vanity accessory you put them wherever the current trends dictate that you should.

I have a tattoo on my right side and I don't swing that way. I like the right side=strong side comment. If you got a tattoo on the right side of your lower back you might have a boyfriend (http://www.chacha.com/topic/boyfriend) though.

one of the older women who works at the hospice shop around the road from me stopped me last time i was in. early last year i got my disney dwarfs tattooed on my lower leg.
its a decent size [adult palm length, including the fingers] so stands out heaps if im wearing shorts. she happened to see it over the summer. old bag has a good memory. mum and i dont like her cos shes nosey, asking what we are going to do with things we buy from them etc.
anyway, she stopped me as i was leaving just so she could show her friend. they both insisted on counting to make sure all 7 were there. :eek5: totally weird. lol. i dont mind being stopped if im wearing shorts, but i was in longs. shes lucky i had shaved the night before... the dwarfs had real beards :gob: !! LOL good thing she doesnt know about the butterflies on my back, otherwise she might have made me take my top off, lmao.
as for sides. its lucky tattoos dont weight anything, cos my left side would be heavier. im right handed, but most of my tats end up on my left. i dunno why, its just the way it is. the dwarfs are on the right only cos my other leg already has something.

Mmmm,:sweatdrop. I'm a woose, felt like the tat was being put on with a rusty box cutter. I still have a hankering for a tire tread over my shoulder but would need a general anesthetic to go through with it. I also quite fancy a Kina round me belly button.

Really? I have a fairly decent sized one on my shoulderblade and I was so zoned out during the outlining I could have fallen asleep, the colouring in however tickled something shocking and we had to take a break at one point so I could stop laughing!

I have a chest like a xylophone & the tat goes round my nipple. Hurt like hell. The guy said it was a very sensitive area, I agreed.

Both my sisters reported similar feelings to mine (baby Sis had one on her ribs, older Sis has ankle & back) so maybe we just have strange reactions to pain?
At one point I did have tingles running from head to toe, not totally unlike a full body orgasm actually :woohoo:

its a good idea having blood type on you. i want to get DNR [do not resuscitate] somewhere, but need to be certain.
my dwarfs are on the side of my lower leg. for the record, theres shit loads of nerves under there. my artist nearly got kicked in the chops so many times thanks to relexes. poor guy, hehe. took about 6-8 hours over 3 days. hurt like a bitch, worse than the others ive got. i want and need more, but will wait till next year.

I've been told by a nurse that getting your blood type or DNR tattooed on is absolutely useless, medical professionals are not allowed to trust it.

I knew a guy many years ago who had 'For You' tattooed along the shaft of his man-sausage. Did it himself during one of his jail stints. I guess he had nothing better to do.
EDIT: Ooh shit. I should explain that I saw it because he got pissed one night and walked into the room stark bollocky naked and refused to get dressed.

Met this jamaican guy who had 'wendy' tattooed on his wood. I asked him why if wendy was his girlfriend and he said 'no, when I am with a girl it says, "welcome to jamaica, have a nice day!"
