Lads, I'm bored, spring's almost here and I'm basically up for a mission ride.
I loved doing Ryan's 09 DB1k down south but now I'm moving up here (again) and will unlikely be able to make 2011 down south.
So I'm trying to piece together a northern circuit (http://maps.google.co.nz/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Upper+Hutt,+Wellington&daddr=-39.95623,175.39939+to:-39.78143,175.55734+to:-39.577656,175.5829776+to:-39.469428,175.5874118+to:-39.0410946,175.6595655+to:tihoi+to:-38.462047,175.7607989+to:-38.4113854,175.7487323+to:-38.3511623,175.6688168+to:-38.4043961,175.64186+to:pureora+to:-38.57376,175.3153+to:-38.86047,174.77836+to:-38.904808,174.684709+to:-39.0176457,174.5279925+to:-39.0350751,174.3283482+to:-39.084614,174.2609791+to:-39.577095,174.351888+to:wanganui+to:-39.94429,175.19128+to:-39.98951,175.16185+to:-40.00788,175.16806+to:-40.0176663,175.1755797+to:upper+hutt&geocode=FRx9jP0daFdvCilFhyrtsa1AbTHfXaVoQo8lLQ%3BF fpQnv0d3mF0CikrKNlheCZAbTEcBQulWNhWgg%3BFcr7oP0d3M p2CilZuF5phYZqbTHKY4s90xEstA%3BFcgXpP0dAS93CinlJmM c64pqbTH5F4wwOUGpVA%3BFYy-pf0dU0B3Cin9mGdFdPZqbTG-WMsxmyIIEw%3BFbpHrP0dLVp4Cikb4_A_bKZrbTEUQiG9xXosM w%3BFZKcsv0dS1B5CikvjabEdIhrbTHSl_UVWXG8Qg%3BFaEdt f0dnuV5CinxjE2Dc3psbTHyRez-nIcGDA%3BFYfjtf0dfLZ5CinZsiTBs3psbTGJZGAnjGqPEw%3B FcbOtv0dUH54CimPpJBfl2NsbTEZzVRCJtGwZQ%3BFdT-tf0dBBV4Cik1-06dJmNsbTGymoxxN-6uCg%3BFWNGtP0drsZ2Cikbx9pZA4FsbTFgiaL2OUOU5g%3BFU Bps_0dZBlzCimXa1N2zmFrbTHnBkqE9Un3CQ%3BFUoJr_0d-OdqCik9TIDo8LcUbTGEj5U8DOaLXg%3BFRhcrv0dJXppCimhuK 5R0sAUbTFJ-qxGdAIwHQ%3BFVOjrP0d-BVnCimBi_NIrugUbTGl2Pnvf33DCQ%3BFT1frP0dHApkCikDIT LqxPkUbTG7e15LNuUlBA%3BFbqdq_0d8wJjCinTEnryPFYUbTE hnVNb5diDMA%3BFfkZpP0dEGZkCinJzwG0dHQVbTGpr5HktZP_ IA%3BFSq2nv0d7wNvCindxASvxwNAbTFtbeKa5kalrA%3BFZ5_ nv0d8DRxCimrKKt2PRxAbTFqoQKeXldwBw%3BFfrOnf0d-sFwCimjrq1j5RtAbTGxCu8mAs5FdA%3BFTiHnf0dPNpwCikNlB 5hShpAbTFndLQTFhmkcQ%3BFf5gnf0dm_dwCinNM0lLOhpAbTG 3Vq94BJFaBg%3BFRx9jP0daFdvCilFhyrtsa1AbTHfXaVoQo8l LQ&hl=en&mra=dpe&mrcr=0&mrsp=4&sz=12&via=1,2,3,4,5,7,8,9,10,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,20,21, 22,23&sll=-39.518609,175.673447&sspn=0.147519,0.264702&ie=UTF8&ll=-39.495563,175.413208&spn=2.361103,4.235229&z=8), but as you'd expect, it ain't all that easy to keep off the seal, or even off highways for that matter.
I'm open to guidance and route suggestions here for my Northern 1000km adv ride. And its an Adv ride in a loose sense because so much of it will be on seal. The adv focus for me will be on plotting (and omitting) fuel stops, the endurance (doing it in one sitting), and thankfully having it interspersed with offroad and offseal sections.
What is not shown on the map link above is the track off Akatarawa rd to Otaki, possibly Link Rd up Tihoi way to Pureora - no roads / tracks are shown on GMaps for them. I'm also particularly interested in road / track connections between Stratford and Wanganui.
The route really only scrapes the barrell at 1000km, but hey, if anyone has any bright ideas or wants to have a play and modify the above route and post up the link then that would be awesome. Also keen for riding buddies too

Hummm nice idea...East coat via Junkmanjoe's patch up through herbertvile to havelock north via back roads (gravel & beach) then road to napier taupo turn off to mohaka carry on to lake wiakari Motu. not sure what central routes are any good but the loop back from motu to desert road gravity canyon connect to gentle annie (and it is now gentle seeing most of the gravel is gone) would be a great ride.

Bart took us on about 1000kms in 2 days of mostly gravel, twisty seal, a great pass, and almost a good few kms of beach (highest tide in 50 years stopped us!) all around the Ruahines - and could have been better with less rain, lower rivers and camping at the Hot Pools....
A great 1000kms:yes:
Not sure why I'm adding this, but it was 1000kms, and good adv riding, and in the North Island!
Yay the Bart man:woohoo:

Yep, thought about vinegar hill, will keep it on the radar. Not sure when yet...but will be a saturday and soonish (ie before Xmas) and at this stage is intended to be a non stop ride (ie no sleepovers & hold the high 5's till the end). But as with Ryan's Ride, there's may well be interest in a 2 day option as well, so let's see.

Where's yer routes Bart?

Could be pushing 1200-1300km, so would need to be very picky about how tough the off road routes became if a 1 dayer is to be manageable.

Great idea Buggsy, is the aim here to rack up 1000K via any half decent route, or chase gravel for as much as possible?
I've got some good ideas for more gravel, mostly Wairarapa, Eastside, and Central Plateau area, but you'd most likely have to give the Naki a miss and backtrack down Whanganui River Rd. Your current proposed route has a shitload of sealed road, but they are nice roads nonetheless. Navigation shouldn't be too difficult and the alternate route would probably give a 60 seal/40 gravel ratio.
Also, does the start point have to be in Welly or would somewhere in the 'Rapa be more suitable? Ideas?

Turakina valley road between marton and tangiwai is a good stretch of gravel, if that would fit in your plans

..... a 60 seal/40 gravel ratio. ......
Original idea for the DB was minimum of 50/50 seal gravel. Southern route is about 25/75 seal gravel ;)

i think it would be quite difficult to bang up a 1000km route that takes in a heap of gravel to be ridin in one day
reason, most our gravel roads are narrow / tight with heaps of blind corners and not really able to be ridden fast. safely..
they are short roads mostly linking to a sealed road.
is easy enough to wast a full days riding around the rapa and only banging up 400 odd kms
north island is a lot tighter than the south wide open spaces, its only 750 odd kms from my house to auckland...

I've been thinking on similar lines, as the DB1K never seems to fit with my plans.
I'm more than happy to help out. I'll think about it over the next day or so, as I'm shattered after flying to Auckland and back for a meeting today.:wacko:
Marks may have a few good tracks to add also. How technical do you want it?

I think Joe has a valid point. If maximum gravel is the goal then 1000km is tricky.
I f a great 1000km ride is the goal then that's much easier.
Personally I think some sort of Welly-Shannon-Ashhurst-Taihape-Napier-Waipawa (via Valley Rd/Raukawa Rd/Argyll Rd - woooohoo :woohoo:) - Parongahou - stay close to the coast to Martinborough and over the hill back to Welly (actually this is pretty much Barts last RRRR - which was a great ride)
whatever - as long as it avoids state highways then I'm in

personally, and this is probably where some views will differ, I'm after chasing distance with as much gravel that can fit in with the mammoth ride - ie not so much about keeping a tighter circuit for the sake of keeping off seal. I'm first to admit there's a lot of seal in this route, but the art of trading the main roads for back roads has not fully taken place yet - still under way.
Open to starting in the Rapa - I live in Upper Hutt, so easy for me!

The roads through Pureora forest definitely exist, I've tracked a lot of them myself (but still more to do). If you have Mapsource, load up the NZ Open GPS Mapset, and you'll see them. Can spend hours in there alone.

Ok a couple of questions does it have to be a Wellington start and finish? and are trying for a a single day event or two day ride?
There are plenty of gravel options/ semi gravel options in the Wairarapa. and Manawatu.

In my mind, the Rapa and MWatu are close at hand and can be done any given weekend. The intent here is for a long haul in one sitting. It is meant to be hard and uncomfortable, not a leisurely day tripper.
Depending on what people want to do it may morph into a 2 dayer or there may be two groups in the end.
The goal is 1000-1200km (depending on final route) in one ride, taking in as much gravel routing as possible within the intended generic route.

Here's a rough idea of what I try to put together for the RRRR. Add a few extra sections such as Takapari Road, Makairo, Blackhead beach, as technical sections, and you've got the makings of a good ride (add about 400km from Welly).
This should be over 50% gravel, and plenty more can be added in the Rapa. Fuel becomes an issue, so heading inland towards Waipawa may be necessary.
Whoops...bloody map thing. I'll try again.

Hey how do I add a poll here - for dates... or do I need to start a new thread?
Currently looking at Saturday 14 Nov as preferred date.
- Route still TBC. Depending on numbers I may look to seek permission to access through Zone 1 between the Desert Rd and Ruapehu. Unsure of the likelihood of getting it, and for what numbers. If I'm granted it then it will likely be no more that 6-10 riders under my lead. A lot of environmental and UXO risk perceptions in that zone which requires vehicles to stay on formed tracks...and I don't know if there are any remaining that bridge from Karioi Forest to Tukino Skifield rd. This area would be a combo of 4wd and sand / peametal / rocky chunks type riding and will be hard work if included.
- Intent remains for a ball breaker of a ride taking us a long way from home.
- Working through my route in closer detail there does seem to be a lot of gravel through the Naki backroads and in the NW sector.
- Route will not be proven prior to riding. This is part of the "hardness" of this ride; it'll all be a bit of a surprise.
- Unsure on timings yet. There is a lot of seal b/n Wellington and Wanganui / Marton. This is undoubtedly a shite bit of the route, but equally can be seen as advantageous for getting to the cooler stuff in good time early in the morning, and making for easier riding in the final stages of the return trip.
-My intent is to be getting through the Naki between Waverley and Tihoi in daylight. I haven't worked through expected average speeds / departure & arrival times yet.
- Questions asked about departing from other locs - not too worried myself, but I live in the Hutt so was I guess thinking Caltex Rimutaka would be the go, picking others up along the final route.
-Finally...this ride ain't going to be anywhere near the quality of an organised (yet unoffical) ride like the DB1K. It will be (at best) a few dudes (or just me?!)and associated hangers-onerers attempting something challenging on their own terms.

Sounds promising at this stage - subject to final approval and deconflicting with any training activities we could be allowed to travel cross country from almost Waiouru township up to Tukino Skifield Rd through the perilous Zone 1.
All riders would need to be under my "control":bleh: and would receive a blinds (ie UXO) safety briefing from Army prior to entering the Zone. This would take a small amount of time (20-30 mins perhaps) on the morning but would be worth it.

Yeah haven't got that far yet mate (ie planning the stops). I'm basically limited to 300km give or take, others may be more or less so will work it in to the route...maybe a couple of long legs between Turangi and Urenui over west - no idea what's in between in terms of gas stops between them.
