Yamaha Zeal battling to go up hills

hi all, yesterday i took my bike for a run round to Sumner and heading up a hill the bike started to feel a bit funny. no worries i thought, as im still a bit noobish and assumed i was in 4th gear, and not 3rd so i changed it down but still have the same problem.

i took the bike out again today and tried the summit road, had the same issues.

how i would describe it is that when opening up the throttle, the bike seems to 'bog down' abit. it doesnt lose any revs, it just doesnt wind up according to how it should with the way im using the throttle at the time.

also the exhaust makes a funny sound, kind of like it is 'popping' but not a loud backfire or anything.

anyone got any ideas on what this might be?

on the flat the problem seems not existence.

Whip a spark plug out and check the colour, it sounds as if it's running lean. The plug should be a light tan colour, if it's white or close to then it's too lean

what does that mean?? wouldnt there be more signs if the rings were buggered?

will riding on the flat (where the bike still seems to run fine) damage the bike at all?

Sounds like it is running lean under load.

Check the fuel filter and check the breather on the fuel tank (its usually in the fuel cap) it might not be letting air into the tank. Check how the fuel lines are routed, no kinks or other obstructions. Check that there is not a plug of water in the bottom of the carbs.

Were you running lowish on fuel, I had a new triumph that used to do this from time to time when the fuel was low going up hills.

It should come off easily enough even with a full tank of fuel. Don't forget to turn the fuel tap off first.

The tank is easy to get off. Firstly you remove the screws on the compartment and the side fairings, then there's 4 bolts in total which hold the tank down. You will need to remove the fuel hose which attaches to the fuel pump to fully remove the tank.

Be sure to check your air filter. A filthy filter will mess around with your speeds especially the high end due to not enough air intake.
