Was at home on Saturday night with the wife, quiet night in and a DVD. Only problem was, I didn't have a home theater setup. So come Sunday, I nipped out of work and had a look around. Found one that appealed, negotiated a price and bought it. Reasonable unit, not top of the line (don't watch enough TV) but had all the features I was looking for plus a couple of extras.

Got home from work and started to unpack and setup. An hour later, it was all in place, wired in neatly and ready to change our viewing experience. Put a rented DVD in (the one we watched the night before) and sat back. Hmmm, not much happening, except for the "Wrong Region" message on the screen. Somethings not right here, so I repeat the process but to no avail. So I grabbed one of our DVD's and put it in and what do you know, same story.

Now I'm not up to speed on different zones, never affected me before, but I checked all of our DVD's and see they are all zone 4. A quick check of the manual, and sure enough it only plays zone 3's and 'all zone' DVD's. You're fucking kidding me right, I know I didn't ask but I got sold a unit thats no good to me, other than using it to watch TV. So after setting it all up I find I might have to pack it all away again. But surely not, the salesman made no mention of anything to do with this, so there must an answer. And after much swearing I found a piece of paper, not anywhere near where the instructions were, that informed me that to watch DVD's from any zone, open the tray, enter a code number and close the tray.

Elation, my toy does work after all. Only it doesn't. Despite entering the code many, many times it still wouldn't play. I tried every method to get it to read the code, slowly, medium, fast, from right up to the player, from back at my couch, I even hid around the corner so it wouldn't see me and tried to trick it. But no, it won the battle and I was beaten. So I resigned myself to defeat for the time being, and cheered myself up by watching Top Gear.

I rang the retail store this morning (major chain store) and after being transferred to 4 different phones finally got someone who put the phone down and went and asked someone else, I think it was the first person I spoke to. They told me to reset the unit by switching it off for 10 minutes and then re-enter the code, well I left it for 2 hours just to be sure. And sure enough, it still doesn't work. I even started entering slightly different variations of the code, I felt like a crazed man going even crazier.

So after a fruitless search on the 'net, talking to the retailer, and thinking outsde the square, someone at Philips is going to get a pleasant start to their week.

What make/model DVD is it? Some have codes and others have firmware upgrades. Sometimes you can also find cracked firmware.

After installing a cracked firmware on my old philips DVD to disable macro vision, I had to buy a multi remote that had the right code buttons to re-enable multi zone.

There are also two types on multi zone. Zone free and zone switching. The later is the one you want as some of the newer DVDs from other zones are coded not to play on zone free players.

Or what you can do is if your PC is trick enough is to rip the DVD to your computer using DVDShrink as a zone free DVD, or zone 4. Then burn the DVD, and voila. Instant copies.

Hell for a minute I thought I had answered one of your posts.

But I know how you feel. Had a friend of mine get himself married and went on the honeymoon only to find out his wife got the timing wrong. :tugger:

When we got our home theatre the store put in a multi zone chip. Don't think it's legal but we got it anyway. I'd insist that someone comes out to set it up for you, or demand your money back. I think that there is some legislation out there to that effect.

Hope it all gets sorted

The new encoding (well actually it is a bit old now) is called RCE (http://www.regionfreedvd.net/rce-faq.html). You will know if you got a zone 1 RCE encoded disk and a zone free player when a map of the world comes up when you put in the DVD. But even this can be circumvented because it is in the menu, so just keep pushing stop when you put the DVD in to stop the menu from coming up then quickly select T1/C1 on the remote to go straight to the movie.

Indeed. Ours cost nothing. Son #2 decided we needed one, got sick of me faffing around, so he went and bought one. Bit unfortunate, really, as I would've spent more money and got something flasher. Anyway, it works well enough.
So, after watching a couple of DVDs, listening to CDs, etc., I decided we needed some new speakers (the ones we had at the time were over 20 years old). Set off to buy some, only I took the wife and #2 with us. Came back with 6 (six!!) speakers, a 125W/channel receiver, sundry brackets, etc. Took days to set it all up properly, with wiring in the walls, etc., and cost quite a bit after getting the lounge walls replastered and painted. So, it went from being a "coupla hundred bucks" to around 30 times that...

Still, it could've been more. One of the holes I drilled for a wallmount speaker plug just barely nicked the insulation on the main power cables into the house.

It just occurred to me...what is a 'major chain store' doing selling a region 3 machine for? They were made for Asia. Sounds a bit suss to me.

Buy from a store with people who knows abit about the products they sell. Pual Money on Dominion Rd, Auckland is a small place that have the latest and best price. I bought a DVD home theatre from them, hooked it up and couldnt get it working. I rang them up and they immdiately knew exactly what the problem was. Took me less than 5 mins to sort it out.

I bought a lurrrvly Sony home entertainment system back in the UK. Having hacked my previous two DVD players in order to enable the multi region functionality I thought I'd do the same for the new DVD player. Wrong. I haven't found an easy hack for it yet. The only one appears to involve getting my hands on a Sony programming remote control, and even my mates who work for Sony (as did I) say these remotes are as common as galloping knob rot in a convent.

Sooo - when I got here I paid a visit to Dick Smiths and bought a Dolby 5.1 multi region DVD player for $80. It even included an optical output. So, I now have my Dick Smith DVD player connected, via optical cable, to my home cinema system in an adjacent room. :niceone:

You didn't hear it from me but the LG DVD players are really good. And it's a simple 5 button code that switches them from to unlocked. Plays Final Fantasy no problems, we've got tonnes of DVDs here from all sorts of zones and they all happily play.
