View Full Version : Paekakariki Hill Road - Caught on Camera

Hi all, here's my first attempt at filming on the bike. I went out for a quick ride over the Paekak Hill this afternoon and rigged up the video camera in the tank bag. The positioning isn't great but it's good enough until I get around to making a decent mount.

Hi all, here's my first attempt at filming on the bike....until I get around to making a decent mount.
The vid didn't buffer first so I got this mainline hiccup with lots of good sound that dropped off like it went over a cliff, and a series of stills. I noticed that for all of those changes in engine pitch the needle on the speedo just sat between 60 and 80 kph. Much nicer the 2nd time through. Good effort. :niceone:

I take i you had slowed down because of the camera

I was quite conscious of the camera bouncing around in the tank bag but more so I feel like shit at the moment (I got the flu). The road was a bit on the damp side as well and I just really wasn't in the zone.
And I never go above 100Kph anyway...

Damn, what a sweet road...is that the one when you approach Wellington from the East? I came down through Hawkes Bay in a shit heap car with the gf one time...and there was a mad twisty road around that way.

That's probably the Rimutakas which connects the Wairarapa Valley with Upper Hutt/Wellington.
This road connects SH1 & SH2 from Paekakariki on SH1 to Lower Hutt on SH2.
Well the dash looks familiar, but sure sounds weird, they sound much different once you hit 8K on the rev counter, aye. What muffler you got, Arrow isnt it?

Thank you.
I wasn't able to ride today, so it was great to get my fix.
Next time, can we please have less of the instruments and more of the road.
Funny, when I am riding I am aware of the revs, but don't notice the sounds like I do on the video.
From this bike-aholic, thank you.

Yeah it's an arrow...it sounds quite different on the video than in real life.

That's the plan...I'm going to make up a couple of mount, one for the top of the tank and one that hangs off the side of the fairing. This was really just a test, I just wrapped the camera in a towel and put it in my tank bag so I wasn't able to see what kind of view I was getting until after the ride.

But then how did the camera see? Wasn't the poor little thing blinded?

I left a little opening in the front of the tank bag so it could see.

You should try it and post it anyway...I'd be keen to see it. I don't really care what others think anyway...if there's some advice that'll improve my riding then all good but otherwise:whocares:

Thanks Jim, it was a real dodgy job, I'm surprised that I didn't just end up with a heap of the inside of the tankbag.

Let me do a better version before you do...I'll PM you once I've done it.

Totaly agree, just wanted to show a little support though. I think it's great and will try it (if i can wrestle the vidiocam of my X for a while :eyepoke: )
Might try with my digicam but that only does about 30sec's and no sound.... but then again... might be easier then a big vidcam...

1. I LOVE broadband. Less than 30 seconds to download that.
2. Don't you just LOVE those cagers with their right-hand wheels either on or over the white line? Another reason this road deserves its epithet of "The Goat Track of Death".
3. It's encouraging to see somebody who doesn't go up there quicker than I do!
4. Interesting to note that you don't use the throttle as a cornering aid, holding more or less constant throttle through a corner.

1) More like 30 mins here on teatime dailup
2) Glad you said right-hand wheels and not left
3) So you play it safe and stay in first gear then Hitcher?
4) I would have like to have heard the throttle being throttled more.
Nice video. I wonder if the cops would bust someone for posting one of a bike doing say 112kph in a 100kph zone? Would the video evidince hold up in court?

Good point, I do going over the Takas. Perhaps because I know the road heaps better.
I've only been over the piecock 2 or 3 times on a bike, dumb considering that it's closer to home than the Takas.

They would have to prove it was you riding...I must remember not to look into the camera to test that it's working.

Only if they could prove it who was riding that bike;
And that the speedo was accurate;
Etc.

Fantastic mate, if you are interested in bike cams, maybe think about a bullet cam connected to you camera.....if its mounted in the right place the cops will not see it
have a look at this site
http://www.helmetcamera.com.au
I got myself a bullet cam which mounted on the front/side of the fairing, just under the mirror, the camera was located under the pillon seat and cables run through the bike behind the frame...works great...

I though about this kind of set up but I doubt I'd get the capex approved. I managed it to buy the video camera (cause we really needed one to take home movies of the kids that we don't have yet:whistle:) but I don't want to push my luck.
I'd be keen to see some of our vids.

She was on the back of the bike when I took that video and she's seen the footage but I want to buy a DVD burner next (to make home DVDs of our kids:whistle:) and I'd be pushing shit uphill to try and convince her that we need a bullet cam for similar reasons.

Not saying that I'd put them back or anything, but kids + video camera, or no kids, no video camera? Hmmmmm.
Makes you think.
Went out today with my camera that records movies stuck to my chest.
Heres a small clip. Do you think the quality vs size is ok?
What is the biggest movie file you can upload to the site? I'd like to see more people posting their movies just so you can get an idea of roads.
The camera saves in an MJPEG format and when you edit and save it the file actually comes out bigger in Mpeg format. More frames per sec or something. That why I'm trying wmv. Maybee if I just post the unedited file from the camera but then I picking people might not have the codec to make it work. I have a Matrox card that uses this format.
Any suggestions appreciated.

That's not too shabby an effort. Saddle Road ascent from Ashhurst. The STeed loves going up there, almost as it likes the ascent from the Woodville side! What's the road surface like at the moment?

Theres a few patches of loose chips on some resealed parts and some patches that havent been sealed. But theres also some very nice bits without any problems.
The Pahiatua Track is very crappy where they have just resealed it (potholes and all the road surface lifting) Whoever did the roadworks stuffed up bigtime as it worse than when they started now. But there still is some good road on the way up there.
I think the best ride around here is out to Mangaweka via Cheltenham. Theres two great roads to choose from. :ride:

Yeap its a 4 mega pixel Cannon IXUS. Records for about 2 mins or so then turns itself off. 42 meg file. Will have to experiment a bit more to find out what works best.

Really enjoyed both clips. Makes me yearn to be out there, instead of in the office.
Garry, how'd you keep the wind noise off the recording? Was the camera just sitting in the right place for the wind to get deflected off the screen and above the camera?
Yea, that saddle road is a good one!

Raced the saddle road in a rally car, but never been near it on a bike. Looks like I need to now I think :)
Both vids were pretty impressive. What amazes me about seeing footage on camera is that you think you're pussy footing around, relatively upright, nothing too dramatic looking... then you see it on camera and you realise you actually look like you're moving and the lean angle is impressive!! Bonus points awarded to the participants for no crash footage as well!!
Then you see someone infinitely better than you doing the same thing and your insecurities return...

The camera was placed in a holder and held to my chest with very strong magnets for out of a computer hard drive MR head. The Mic on this thing is just a small hole and it was almost covered up with the sponge from the holder.
First attempt I had at filming all I got was my tank as I leaned forward riding so had to point the camera upwards a bit to compensate.
It was very wet here after work today but I'm keen to have another go soon.
My favorite section of the Pahiatua Track this time maybe.

Well the resolution it shot in is 160x120 pixels and it was saved in video for broadband NTSC at at 384 kbps. Plus its only 25 secs long.
I thought the quality was not that good compared to the original file but mjpeg's won't play on alot of peoples PC's (I think). Next time I'm shooting at 320x240 pixels.
Mjpeg's have each frame seperately compressed like a series of JPG's but DIVX and other formats compress the movie as a whole comparing frames and carring over information like what pixels stay the same between frames.(so I believe)
Hope this helps.
