Registered my 1000 today for daylight savings - $305 for 7 months.
My risk of accident is no less cause I don't really get out in winter anyway, but I saved myself $212.

The revenue collection from tickets was so successful, that the govt decided to expand operations?
The crack down on illegal road use activities has been so successful that roading injuries have been reduced to the point whereby the health system has lost the benefits of economies of scale, and each individual must pay more?

Probably not far off an apprentices weekly wage back then.
When I registered my bike in 07 (Sep), it was around the $200 mark and slightly cheaper than a car. I guess inflation has caught up..........big time.

what happened?
What happened was that some people decided that it was about time for lil ol' NZ to join the rest of the world, instead of continuing to be a quaint little slice of paradise.
So they used clever phrases like "global macro-economics", "liberalization" "user-pays" "corporatization" etc. to con the ordinary kiwi into believing he would be happier while all the while plotting a massive transfer of wealth and power into the hands of the already wealthy and powerful.
The result is that everything that has real value (health, education, water, land, good food) and was relatively cheap and accessible to the average NZer now costs a lot more. The things that people equate with material prosperity, i.e. consumer electronics, cars, bikes etc. which were previously luxury items now cost a lot less. At the same time user-pays and the restructuring of government and council owned (read "taxpayer and rate-payer owned") operations brought about massive increases in fees and costs for services.
Thus we are deluded into believing we are better off but when we do the sums we wonder why we're not getting ahead. The things we used to consider luxuries and bought only occasionally are cheap, while the things we need every day are expensive. I can buy a sophisticated piece of electronic equipment - a DVD player - produced in a factory thousands of kilometres away for less than the cost of a decent leg of locally-grown lamb. Before long I'll be paying more in registration fees for my bikes than they are worth (I think it might have already happened in the case of my Honda).
Anyone who defends the absurdity of current economic practice on the grounds that we are all better off nowadays needs a serious reality check.

While is the states recently I noticed that about the only thing more expensive than here was illness/injury insurance.
Of course the states ain't sitting pretty in the econimic stakes right now - but NZ ain't too flash either.

went to dubai last new years eve. Decided to have a bbq in the desert. Got some NZ beef from the supermarket there, it was cheaper than what we pay for it here! Goes to show how were all being ripped off by our govt in taxes/levies/whatever

A little thing but a $20 phone card in the US gives you six HOURS of overseas talking time.
How much would it cost to buy a similar amount of overseas time in NZ??

When pressed politicians will say the over all increases aren't that great PER item. Yeah your right but instead of a kg of cheese it 750grams...fuel will be next its going to be 750 ml per ltr at slightly more cost than now...

I'm considering the same - reg for 7 months, hold for 6 months - then I should have the rego due for the right six months of best riding weather. I figure as long as I get no more than 1 ticket a year for riding with rego on hold then I should be breaking even.

It's just that I can't put the Rego on hold now for only 1 month, so I'll Rego for 7 months this one time then go to 6 months off, 6 months on . . .
Registering from October to April in future gives me the best 6 months registered and the worst 6 months unregistered.
