View Full Version : High idle speed

I've taken the fuel tank off my CBR250 to change the fuel filter and clean the air filter, and now it idles at around 3000RPM when warm. It used to idle at around 2200RPM. I have wound out the idle adjustment screw all the way out, and it still won't idle any lower than 3000RPM.

The choke lever now also stuck on the off position, if I try and pull the choke lever it just won't come out. I can't find where the choke cable leads to on the carbs.

What should I do?

Check that you haven't jammed the cables around/under putting it back together, if you've got tension on the cable the adjustment screw won't do anything.

you've answered your own question. the choke should work like it did before you tootooed with it. it isn't, and it's probably causing your high idling. you should take your bike to someone who knows what they're doing.

The only money I've got is a few loose coins in my wallet, so that's not an option. I'll follow the choke cable all the way down and I'll see what I can find.

Just as well I took the air box off again when I did as the air filter oil was starting to flow into the carbs, and that was after I carefully followed the instructions on the filter oil bottle instructions. I might as well wash the oil out of the filter and run it without oil.

Another good idea is for you to have your own "Help" thread. Mods could merge all your questions into one thread.

Your welcome. :D

I've solved the problem with the choke, so now all I have to do is put the bike back together and hope for the best.

cool - great stuff.
but if the air filter is suposed to have oil, then do put it back with oil on it. just perhaps no quite so much, it only needs a little. (yeah i know, all subjective..)

I washed the filter out last night with turps and water, so I'm going to wait for it to dry and put a tablespoon of filter oil on it this time.

Turps is a bad choice it can attach plastics and foams. You better check the filter isn't dissolving

It's all good, I washed out all the turps with plenty of cold water.

And posters that just gotta whingeI know, but she is entitled to her opinion :) (although there's plenty more fucked up threads to whinge about IMHO)

If you get stuck, I can give OAB one of those K%N filter recharger kits with the cleaner and oil if it helps.

Thanks for your help everyone. I put the bike together and it runs mint now. I estimate I have saved at least $300 by doing the work myself instead of paying a mechanic to do it.

PHEW!..glad someone noticed that one , poormans filter cleaner...warm water (not hot) with a "little" soap, then rinse with lots of cold water, then air dry.(or if you have the dosh buy a cheap filter cleaning solution..not to costly) and always add fresh filter oil after cleaning...its what traps the dirt & repels the water...or you just end up with a clean sieve lol)

And good on ya for doing the work yourself :niceone:...its the best way to save money and learn. (as long you take your time and do some research...can't go wrong)
