Same here, I often get kids grinning and waving when passing cars on the motorway or open road, so I always try to wave back at them.
My kids sometimes wave at riders when they go past us in the car, "Look dad, a motorbike!"
Completely different reaction from dogs in the back of utes though, not that they can wave... When splitting in Auckland traffic the utes carrying the biggest dogs always seem to be hidden just beyond a truck that prevents them from being seen, or the dogs are lying down unseen. The mongrels suddenly seem to leap out from nowhere and start barking right next to my head. I remain wary of utes.

I find that little girls jump up and down and point - I guess it is because I am wearing pink and are obviously a girl.
Also teenage boys seem to stare and smile......

I once had two teenage girls obviously interesed in a hormonal way as I pulled up to park. The change that went over their faces as I took off the helmet was classic - "Oh Shit! He's as old as Dad!"

Hard to believe you haven't been attacked by the rabid dog yet. I hang back to see what reaction the dog's going to give me, as I'd rather not jump as it goes to attack. hehe. I then like to have a good conversation with it as well (not with the fist, jusst start barking back).

Nah, he was probably wondering if road bikes could possibly be as much fun as dirt and why the hell you'd buy a bike you had to ride on the road, dealing with dickweeds, cops, dogs, and everything else.

Reason is simple:
It is the same as there is no racist kids born. Racism is something that they are taught. Kids are happily playing with each other not caring re colour of skin or religion. Only once parents/society starts feeding them opinions will this affect them.
So, the same applies to bikes: Kids see them and think they are cool. Until they are fed rubbish re how dangerous the bikes and the bikers are. Not wanting to plant any ideas in to Smittys head, but if he got a campaign agaist bikes going on at preschools and primary school all his worries would be over.

Yes, it is most guys, especially guys on bikes....... I went to a cafe in Helensville that had a few bikers there - sports bike guys and they all stopped and stared when I turned up on my loud bike

If a child is staring, I always wave to them. Hopefully it leaves a good impression and we get more converted to our faith when they grow old enough to get a license.

Can't have been my kids. They have been taught to give the finger to motorbike riders. Funny, but they think it is a special hello wave for bikers.

If you tell children that bikes are dangerous and they shouldn't ride them then there will always be some that will want to ride bikes BECAUSE they are dangerous and they have been told they shouldn't ride them.

I've heard that older women know stuff - if you catch my drift. Maybe some younger men would like to get the benefit of some skill & experience. Let's just call you "Mrs Robinson".

When I am on road patrol with the kids at school they get a great buzz when a motorcyclist waves or acknowledges them. I think it's cool cause I always wave at kids too - actually I tend to rev my bike up HAHA

I find with my red camo ninja pajama outfit, I get the kids doing the "wha?" double-takes ... and when they do muster up the courage to approach and talk to me when I am dismounted ... it's along the lines of "are you in the army mister?"

Eggszackery.
I do wave to the kids - they seem to get a huge buzz outta it. For some of them, I think a person on a bike is completely outside their experience, and they fair nut off to their folks if they get a positive response.
If I'm talking to them and they show any interest, I've also told a few (very) young nephews/nieces/assorted young folks to wait until they are 21, and then ask Dad for one :innocent:...I've been called bad, bad names after that.

They'd better not take a look at me, I'm old enough to be their grandfather :shit:
There was a small girl came up to me outside the supermarket when I was getting onto my motorbike the other day, she had a scooter - foot propelled variety - and she said, "I need a motor on my scooter like you have." She asked all sorts of questions, like "Is it hard on your head inside your helmet?" "Why do you wear such heavy clothes?" "How do you stay up?" I took my helmet off so she could feel the padding, told her I never wanted to fall off my bike but if I did the clothing might stop me getting hurt, and told her that one day she would ride a two wheel bike and would know herself. Her Mum stood back and watched, seemed happy to have her daughter's curiosity answered.
But I think its just curiosity. Will that different person on a bike and NOT in a car wave back.

Neither do I. Even with a clear one it's not that easy to see your face. Especially when the view is mostly from the side.

Had to laugh today, coming home from work earlier I stopped at a set of lights, group of little kids with Mums in tow about to cross in front of me, the littlest girl gives me a big smile and wave! She must have only been about 3 years old, so I gave her a wave back - don't think her Mum was too impressed though, gave me a sour look...!
