View Full Version : Wind or Rain?

What would you rather ride in?

I don't mind the rain too much apart from the getting wet. But i can't stand the wind. Being blown all over the road and constantly having to fight to go in a straight line makes me so angry :S

I don't mind the wind as long as it's constant. It's the gusts that give me the shits.

Rain - no problem. Gusty wind - yuk.

but put them together wind and the rain a bit of a different story.... but meh, just do it

Wind can be quite good fun - I just relax and it's usually fine :)
Rain isn't too bad.
Fog on the other hand I can't stand - freaks me out O_o

Riding in the rain is fun. I don't even get wet since I can just tuck myself into the cockpit, and the gear I've got keeps me dry as well.

Strong winds are never nice, especially on a 250.

Wind on a 250 sucks - now I am on a bigger heavier bike I don't mind as much, but would rather be riding into the wind or have the wind behind me than blowing me sideways.

25th September 2010, 19:38
Rather wind as it does not make me wet.

But what I REALLY hate is wind, rain AND the dark. In those conditions I can't even keep up with farmer Joe in his ute!

Cant say strong sidewinds are much fun on a 1340cc either.

If I was out and got caught it started to rain/piss down it does not worry me, I have been out in the worst weather posssible, rain drops you feel through your leathers, 5pm and really dark, massive wind coming from the left, so much so that, the group I was with slowed to about 50 kph and moved to the left (outside) lane away from the WRB's. All this on the southern motorway. The mix of both is a bastard.

If I have to ride in either ... I WILL. If I DON'T have to ... I wont.

Both take the fun out of a ride ...

Rain, ice, fog or even snow, dosn't really bother me (good matched tyres and an amazing weather suit! :bleh:).....but high gusty winds!
No thanks, the guzzi is not that aerodynamic side on, got blown across two lanes this winter (while I was on a 45 deg angle fightin it) and "danced" on the outer white line...not that much fun, but it did break the monotony of the trip into work lol.

Loose grip on the bars is essential for wind riding. If it's really bad and the 250 is lacking the pep to go into it, just tuck down over your tank. MAkes a world of difference, especially on a naked machine. The speed triple doesn't seem to mind, then again 100Nm of torque tends to do that.

Yep don't mind either but put them together and stuff that....although if I am already out in it then yeah just do it:yes:

What I prefer is wind over rain to answer the question

Rain.

Going round a 25 corner and nearly getting blown into an 18 wheeler on the other side of the road by a sudden gust?

Not fun. Always handy to carry a spare pair of undies in case such an incident arises as you may need them.

Right on, both annoy me, rain slightly less so perhaps but only slightly..

I hate both as well, but if I had to choose one it would be rain... afterall, it's only water

When I was young (back when dinosaurs still walked the earth) I didn't like wind, compared to rain. I still don't.
But I have learned better techniques for coping, except for those sudden gusts that come with no warning.

Yeah I hate that, pretty hard to let it out in your leathers eh?
At least the pillion knows what you're doing when you hoist a tad on the front pegs.

I don't have an attraction to either, if it is too windy, raining or both and I don't have to go out I won't.
If I am out and either or both start up I suck it in and adjust myself accordingly... relax the arms and keep of the shiny stuff.

Actually if the wind is not too strong I often enjoy it

Yeah ... got hit by wind on the Rimutakas on a blind left hander and wound up on the wrong side of the road .. luckily nothing was coming ...

I'll take rain ever time ... it just makes the road slippery . wind can be a sudden killer ...

I'm surprised that a Wellington rider would bother asking such a question. You know you're going to get both, usually together.

I can safely say that after many years commuting in the capital that I hate both, but they don't stop me from wheeling the bike out each morning. can't be arsed riding in the weekend if the weather's not too flash.

Don't notice wind much too used to it, rains ok except the few types where visibility is reduced considerably.

Dont mind either on their own, but put them together and I'm looking for excuses not to ride in it.

Wind or Rain just another day in Wellington:Punk:
I would rather have none of the above but wind to me is better. Rain on these roads with the crazy drivers not looking:shit:
Still cant get over those mean wind gusts on the wellington motorway is just crazy:wings:

Both together. The more the merrier Up to a certain point that is. Once the wind starts lifting the bike off the road, it's time to stop...:devil2:

Having said that, I do miss dry roads after about a week...

davebullet
27th September 2010, 11:05
Definitely prefer wind over rain. Putting other motorists into the picture here:
1. Visibility is reduced with rain. More likely a car will tailgate and slide into the back of me under heavy breaking, not see in fogged up windows, mucky / rain spotted wing mirrors etc...
2. My tyres are happier in the dry - makes me feel more confident
3. Most wet weather gear gives up after a period - especially boots

wind is easier to fight:
1. Loose grip on the bars
2. Hunker down over your tank if really bad (assuming you don't have a beer gut issue).

I prefer the wind myself, was not always that way.

The technique I use for strong wind (especially the unpredictable gusty variety)
Sit forward in motocross attack position (elbows bent and on balls of feet on the foot-pegs and body in hunched position) have a relaxed-ish grip on bars, not death grip, or too loose either.
When a gust hits, being in that position allows a rapid response, i.e using feet to counter weight foot pegs, using knee to pull against tank (if bike type/design allows) and hand/arm to push/pull appropriate handlebar.
So in practicable terms, if the wind blows from left, push down on left foot peg, while pulling against fuel tank with right knee and counter steering left handle bar (pushing left hand handle bar in the outwards direction) and be ready to reset these bodily forces in an instant if that gust drops suddenly. :scooter:

MSTRS
27th September 2010, 12:22
Haven't tried that one.
I used to simply lean the bike towards the windward side. That helped counter the sideways push, but left the bike open to veering as the wind force dropped (behind a hedge or some other windbreak).
Now I slide my arse over the seat on the windward side, and if the gusts are really strong then also stick my knee out on that side. The body 'lean' counters the wind push, but because the bike is still upright, and I'm not using any countersteering, it tends to track straighter when the gusts come and go. All in all, I find this method quite effective and stable.

Yeah, I use the knee technique as well, but more in the constant wind rather than gusty variety. Though I developed my response in the "manly" Wellington gusts rather than those limp wristed Hawkes Bay zephyr like ones :bleh:

You forget that I, too, grew up in the Windy City...
I also lived in the Manawatu and commuted between Feilding and Palmy for some time.
It wasn't until I came to the Bay and encountered the fabled Nor'Wester that I learned the error of my earlier technique.
(I just wish I'd learned it sooner. Would have avoided a heap of :shit: moments...)

.....wind can get on your nerves and make for an unpleasant ride...id rather that than cold water running down the crack in yer arse....cured that after 30+ years of it....bought some really cool wet weather gear....cost as much as the price of my first bike....takes so long to get on that sometimes i think the water in the crack is a better option...

27th September 2010, 12:46
Na, I did not forget, I just never knew!
Now I'm in wind HQ, the pricks want to put a wind farm by me with the closest turbine less than 2km's away. World class wind they say

Like everyone else, we've had ten days of strong wind and rain up until about Sunday. At which point the roads dried out and i got some decent riding in.
Was set to go out again this morning. No wind. No rain. Which means...

Rain anyday, unless it's torrential, or dark.

Wind is ok if it's constant but strong sideways gusts give me the shits. My hubby gets blown around big time on his v-strom if it's got the top box and panniers on. He can be all over the road when I've hardly noticed a puff yet. I have been blown off my bike, and also blown onto the wrong side of the road in front of an oncoming car - both on the same day and it wasn't even meant to be windy.

Rain and wind together - forget it, I put my nana tea cosy on and stay home

Give me rain any day over gusty wind.
Combine the two and it's a good day to work from home, especially going over the harbour bridge..

I was riding home one day last week in that god-awful gusty shit wind we had and saw another person on a bike (admittedly just a little old GN250) get blown from their lane across into mine.....

At least it gave me 1/2 a seconds warning..

I think they went home to change their undies...
