Being a girl and all that :msn-wink: I dont have a huge selection of tools to mechanic with. I get by with my "dolly tool" a 1/4" drive socket set, a few allen keys, a phillips head screwdriver and a small set of ring and open end spanners :niceone:

When the blue lovely came to live at our house, she came with a pack rack (not fitted) and a 50l Ventura pack full of spare bits and bobs, ie anyone need a cush drive for a 1987 Radian? So it looks like I am going to need to be doing a bit of travelling on the BB, so today I decided to fit the pack rack to the bike :pinch:

Now, who the hell dreamed up the fitting brakets for this bike? About had to take the rear end to bits to fit the thing. Fiddly little places, requiring tools that fit the nuts/bolts/screws and the tiny little space required, combinations of which I was struggling to find. I even used a cresent :shit:

However, the Blue Lovely now has a Ventura pack rack fitted. The pack is empty and in the laundry for me to clean the insides of. I showed Maha the hole in the bottom of the pack (one of the seams is coming undone) he reckons it is all good, it is somewhere for the water to drain out of

Have black bin liner, will travel.

Super beats taken the cage now......first time I fitted the pack rack to the bike it was in the middle of their showroom and borrowed tools from the workshop...

What I dont understand is why the hell they needed to have a 12mm, 14mm, 13mm, and something that need a cresent all on the rear of the bike. What the hell happened to my onboard tool kit ability to fix me bike? I have a 10mm socket and rachet, a phillips head screw driver and some allen keys under my seat? Hope all those nuts and bolts are tight enough. Might tuck a cresent under the seat as well :pinch:

I dont know about that though. This was all on stock bits attached to the bike. Like the seat cowl and the pillion grab rail and the indicator mounting bolts and lets not talk about those stupid plastic plug things that have a phillips head screw through them that open up when you screw them. Actually, I think I might stop now just before I make a tit of myself

next time you are passing a Kathmandu or a Bivouac or one of those outdoorsy places, cruise in and grab a pack liner. They are usually bright orange. They are much much more robust than a black binliner, which will rip as you try and stuff it in the pack, but you wont see it, then when it rains you will be all "Oh yeah, all my shit is in a black binliner, bring it on" then you will get where you are going and you will pull your black binliner out and when you do, a large quantity of water will start to piss out of the rip in it. Then you will go "Oh fuck it".

Dont ask me how I know.

Oh, and if you are looking to expand the tool collection, the tool merchants had a super deal on Bahco socket sets last time I was in there: 3/8th drive, heaps of bits and stuff for under $200. Bargain, and entirely adequate for home workshop use.

And yeah, they are a bitch to fit, those racks. I remember putting one on the Hornet and thinking it was far too much like hard work.

She has no need of duct tape, she is of the cable ties brigade. I have seen her in action. If you ever see her bike check out how the side covers are attached :dodge:

I love cable ties!
I have one of those pink "dolly" multi purpose things - I had to laugh when the men thought it was silly but were later caught using it to fix the husbands bike!

When doing some of the basic stuff on a bike, accessing common areas, changing bulbs etc, it's actually best to use your bike's toolkit. You quickly find out how deficient it is, and can odd tools, so you don't find out too late, the hard way in the middle of nowhere.

Other option is to replace bolts with more common heads, so you need less tools.
