hmm even has his address listed on his other auctions looks like he may have bought it and not know it was stolen or is just real dumb.

I'd go with not knowing it was stolen, probably knows nothing about dirt bikes (hence the listing and asking price). All hypothetical though, would love to hear how this goes...

Hopefully you find out who (if anyone) they bought it off. If they really had no idea about bikes and that it was hot, why would they be buying a bike to instantly sell it again?

Jay GTI
23rd August 2011, 11:54
If you look at their other listings, they seem to be selling up. But again, not a great deal of point in me hypothesising, could be all sorts going on in reality.

nah he's dirty.who cares about k's,but i'd never buy a bike without knowing its year, especially when it looked so new, you'd be a little curious about it.

GOLD love these stories

Still have a dream of starting a national database for off road bikes that pontetial buyers can check against to see if its come up stolen.

Be free for the owner to list it then when its stolen email me the chassis number etc etc then i mark it as dodgy

Then the potential buyer pays a VERY SMALL fee to have me search the database for it.

Simple but have to convince the owners to part with the info.

Please keep us posted on the outcome.

i`am more surprised the ad mentioned it actually runs, judging by his "rm powerband" comment i wonder how he figured out its needs oil in the gas. Its past the 15th i wonder why he hasnt changed the km reading after checking the speedo???

Our conversation so far:

Hi,

After hearing numerous stories of dirt bikes being stolen and having 3 bikes stolen myself I was wondering if you would consider making a compulsary field where the seller has to put the bike serial number. Considering most insurance companies ask for these, most people should know about them anyway. Also ideally these serials would get fed back to the brand reps in NZ to check the seller is providing a legitimate number or even a number that matches that brand and model of bike.

Good to hear you found it, just wondering where they took it from and how they got it! Just picked up a kxf from Mr Motorcycles yesterday and you got me all paranoid now :P Mines chained up in my garage is that enough?

If the scum want it badly enough, they will get it and there's very little you can do about it. However, making it as difficult as possible to remove is definitely not a bad idea and deters the opportunistic thief. Chained up is good, chained to something immovable is better.

What sort of power band has it got?

interesting thread.. curious tho as that person selling that bike has some other pretty large listings. Im guessing the account holder is a female judging from the buyer and sellers feedback....profile is "Jody" and the items which they have purchased and sold seem to be mainly female clothing etc..
.
A person with a house of that price for sale i dont think would risk the consequences of selling a stolen bike for approx $2500 profit unless its being sold on behalf... Also there account isnt exaclty new,it was first registerd in 2003... Those pics of the bike are deffinatly taken at that rothsay bay adress in there other trade me listings judging by the drain pipe in the picture :D
If it is your bike why not go and view the property they have listed for Sale/Rent and check it out?

Be intersting to see if it is the one your looking for! :)

Scott would if he could, but he's on the piss in Europe for a year or two.
I'm pretty sure Scott knows his bike. Who else would put a steering damper on an RM125?.

That a person has a 2008 bike that's probably worth 8-9k and
- was originally trying to sell it for 1500 and is now trying to sell it for 2800
- refers to it as an "RM Powerband"
- originally called it a 2012 bike

could possibly be all coincidence but more likely not

Has anyone even tried to talk to the seller, could be legit, they could of brought it not knowing its stolen, have no clue about bikes, as you can tell by there post.
try talking to them, seem legit trader,

I have no shame in being proven wrong, give the trader the benefit of the doubt.

before everyone goes over to the guys house to burn him, he might not know its stolen. knowbody knows where or how he got it.

I brought a bike to fix a while ago, when I went to look at it, the whole thing stunk and didnt add up. I took the chasis number and gave it to the police, they didnt have the number in the system, so they told me there was know way of knowing for sure.

reply:

"Yes, the bike has been painted

Sort of power band. Not sure what you mean as I bought the bike to play
with....don't really know too much about it...

Perhaps you could tell me how to look at the bike so I can answer your
question

Cheers"

What now? Thought I might ask them for the vin # so I can figure out what kind of powerband it has.

Edit: I won't take it any further than this without Scott's word tho, don't want to disrupt any police action etc just grab some info :)

As much as a lynch mob sounds like a good idea it could be counter productive...

Ask them for the engine/chassis number so you can identify what kind of powerband it has... (the early models have a rubber band so I hear )

i am out of the country, i got paid out by insurance on this bike so i have no legal right to it, i have no doubt this is my bike,

i have got onto the insurance company though work at home, and it is up to them now, they told me they would handle everything incl contacting the police, i thought about sending an email to the person but decided against it as it may go back into hiding, by the looks the guy has no idea what so ever on what he has, and the bad paint job, strecthed chain, and general bad condition, if it is still listed tomorrow ill send him an email,

i have no doubt it is my bike, the set up is very unusual as there are very few 90 kg 6 foot tall people riding rm125's, and i am pretty sure that i am the only person to put that ohlins damper on a 125 (even Robert Taylor did not know they fit until i tried it) and the yellow rims are rare as well,

right, its 730pm over here, i am heading to the pub,

asked if he still had it relply was " Not for sale sore mate.. Just found out its stolen"

How surprising guess that means the insurance Co has acted on it.

now I wonder if the insurance company, will put it up for tender, who's your insurance company Scott? be a bloody good buy with that gear on it.
but then again, they would wont top dollar

sorry but if he "purchased" it I am assuming he won't get any money back then?

I will be an optimist and assume that he didn't know but you have to wonder given the year etc of it that even a newbie would do a quick check of webpages etc and work out that it was a bargain. He was selling it rather cheaply after all ..... :shifty:

I agree that we need some sort of register to put stolen chassis numbers on so that people can find out...and just an admin fee to cover the cost of setting it up and running it.

Will keep an eye out at turners for it....I need new rims!

if the insurance got it it will most likely come up for auction, and you would want ot ee how they looked after it before you committed, i did 1.1 hours on it and in the auction it said 18.5 hours, if they did not use good oil, or take care of the air filter you can do a bit of internal damage in that time,

the tall seat and bars would not suit everybody but are easy to change, and the steering damper is a bonus for most,
