Used Bikes Rip Off or Bargains

Every now and then I have a good look at new and used bike prices and I've got to say the buyers are getting ripped off. As an example take the bargain 1200 Suzuki,brand new at $9995 then look at these dealers used prices 1999=$8495,2000=$8995, 2001=$8490/8995, 2002=$9995, 2003=$8995.
OK there not all the same excatly, some with fairing some without but still the same basic bike. You'd be wanting a pretty big discount to buy them rather than the brand new. How come the prices ar'nt the same as cars and drop by 25/30% as soon as you leave the showroom?

Lucky you weren't around in the 50s,60s and 70s - new cars were bought and sold without being used with a 10 to 20% increase over new prices.

Sometimes they were sold for a 20% markup on new prices AFTER being used !

A new K4 Bandit 12 is now $10999 + orc (normaly $300- $400 6 or 12 months rego) An "S" is $13999 + ORC.

A well looked after RF900 will still fetch $8000 with up to 20000km. You could buy 'em new for $9999.

Bikes don't devalue quite like cars do and it works in everyones favour. Trade ins are alot better and as a result, people change bikes more frequently.

i totaly agree. it is a rip off. but i notice that the price does drop for the more expensive bikes. eg anything over 20k new.

bikes new about the 12k mark have never really lost their price much. so i can't understand myself.

why are all bikes still expensive on the 2nd hand market? even 250's

would be nicer to lower the 250 prices on 2nd hand bikes. espically to encourange new riders to come through. riding is too expensive to set up if your young and don't have the pennies.

This is the yahoo auction price , the dealer auctions tend to be slightly lower but not buy much , depends whos there and buying ,,,,( but its a good measure of the market price.....)

Then you have the shipping approx 20 to 30 bikes in a container ... single bikes can be done ( but the paperwork would be a killer ,,,not my area so dont know)
Anyhow there you go .... but yup 8995 and a new one is 9995 ..even I could figure that one ...buy the second hand one :doh:

It looks like you have taken the spectatcularly beautiful and well endowed GS1200ss for your example. These have a list price of $10k as Suzuki got an end-of-the-line bunch in from Japan at a very good price. I believe that they were more than that when first sold here. I believe that there are none left new in NZ at that price (corrections anyone). Soo,
1) There are some people out there for whom $8k is quite a big drop from their new price, and
2) The $10k is now somewhat theoretical (or theatrical :whistle: )

And the GS1200 is such a nice bike, why would anyone think twice at paying say $11-12k for a secondhand one only riden to church ...

No fleet deals is one reason. A fleet discount can be 20%, plus or minus on the "retail" value of a new car. Good for the fleet buyer, bad for the private purchaser. And the dealer still makes a dollar. Go figure...

They are an aftermarket thing that everyone sticks on them ,,just a digital meter with yoshi sticker ..I amn not sure of the price I ll have a nosey and post back

400 katana with pipe? a bit expensive ,the other one strangely is a the D tracker , they stick supertrapp mufflers on them ..and boy do they want sillys for that
( by the way Dan Holmes who won the AMA champ on an Enfield tried a supertrapp an LOST power,,,)

Not surprising. To buy a new car, the purchaser had to have 'overseas funds'. Most didn't of course, so the used market was wide open for abuse
