For those that are keen there is a ride this Sunday (October 3rd) meeting at 9.30am at Sportzone Suzuki (50 Manchester Street).
We will be leaving at 10am and riding the North Bank of the Waimak to Springfield for a pie and a coke. Return will be via th South Bank for those that have the energy left. The ride will be open to anyone keen but of course you must feel confident in your ability to handle the conditions. I have been up and back recently and the South Eyre River was the only part I couldn't cross but you can get around that easily anyway. Call me (Dean) at work (Sportzone) on 366 0893 for further details.

I can't wait for this ride! I'm going to thrash the poor wee tard within an inch of it's life!:Punk:

I'll be along and with pillion at a more casual pace so long as my Daughter is keen to go with me on the back of the DR again, otherwise we will be doing other stuff I guess.

Fingers crossed.
Cheers
TA.

ive got work so i wont be there - only got one more month of sundays to go

have they repaired the missing chunk of road on the south bank or did you have to detour round it on the road?

Transalper
28th September 2010, 10:28
I heard it's been sorted.

badblackbuell
28th September 2010, 13:02
Yep the 'missing' section has been repaired, I had more trouble with a deep crossing on the south side which a quick riverbed detour soon had sorted. I hope with the recent good weather it should be a lot easier!

Will be there with a "For sale" sign on.
Are we taking in the various tracks inbetween or just following the roads?

thepom
28th September 2010, 19:48
I,d like to try and climb the hill that transalp did a while ago....I keep chickening out....its on the north side....

Transalper
28th September 2010, 19:54
I imagine it will be more the roads than the tracks in the trees but you'll probably be able to do the odd diversion I guess.
They usually aim to be hooking up with the roadies for lunch so I doubt they intend mucking about too much in circles at this stage.

badblackbuell
29th September 2010, 09:13
I'm keen to have a stop at the mini hill climb challenge if anyone is interested, we could turn it into a wee comp? I was there a couple of weeks ago and the wee hill was in far better condition than previously attempted, should be a breeze!
I intend to do the North Bank on the best gravel we can find and the return journey on the South Bank will be aimed at doing a few more of the tracks as the South Bank can be a little harder to negotiate. We will have a slightly constricted
time-frame on the way there as we will need to meet the roadies for lunch but the return journey can be as long and as challenging as we want.

Transalper

Departing Sportzone at 10am so I imagine lunch about 12, and we can take as long as we want to get back so some will be back a lot earlier than others. If you go all the way back via the river including the tracks to McLanes Island and there's more beyond that to Belfast) it can be made to take the whole day, or bail at the Intake or the next out and maybe back in 2 hours after lunch is done?

It's not an actual hill you know, just a step in the ground must be about the height of the roof here at work.

Sweet as, just do the first half of the trip (up the North Bank) join us for lunch and then head home via the inland road to Amberley and you'll be home with plenty of time to do dishes, lawns, washing and even give the Mrs a tickle!

These Photos could be used as a FAIL trying to cut and sharpen the tread on my fucken crappy Pirellis to go and ride up some single track , Nordieboy note the oven gloves are joined so it would make it interesting to use the controls lol. the Avon Distanzas are a good tyre but still not any where near a dirt tyre which would roost whole paddocks of dirt on to yah mate.

50km up on the North bank is pretty much the exit where we turn right and up on to Thongcaster Rd .
I imagine you're at the stream just before that, a left hand bend and there's a surprise stream.
I wouldn't worry about it and a little double back won't hurt if it comes to that.

I've got some tubes hanging about in my garage, I'll bring them and we can float across anything too bad.
Oh hang on, they are in the garage in stead of on the bikes because they have holes in them. Never mind:shutup:

Rode the south bank last weekend. A couple of the crossings were at the sort of depth right on the limit of what I would consider riding alone.

D & I should hopefully get there this time, weather permitting. We might leave the hill climb to you small bore fullas though.

There seems to be confusion on riding up the Eyre river to Oxford so i just got back from riding it up too Oxford from the Waimakariri , I thought i would do a recon run for you guys for i wont make it on sunday. It took me just over 1 hour riding the burg, on the third electric fence too the left i left a warrerta thingy to put on the fence all i know is the second fence is on :shit: its a bit tricky when your riding by yourself .

You will be getting your feet wet cos in patches there is a bit of water ,
When you pass under the wire strung foot bridge the going will get a bit tougher and there is a bit more water make shore new guys dont pass too close to either banks you may not have a head left.

fat bikes will make it but it will be a work out,
My husaburg is great on that type of river work better than my KTM exc just more stand up power slides and bank jumps .

But we aren't going up the Eyre or anywhere near Oxford.
We will be crossing the Eyre once but someone said that ford was dry there now.

Ya all sounding like a bunch a worry warts. I can't see why anyone two up on a 1150gs couldn't do this run on intermediate tyres.
Enough talky talky, just show up and lets ride.

Umm Tranzman i know both sides of the river pretty bloody well thank you , i thought its called an adventure ride not a stock bank shingle ride :violin: and your worried about fording the bloody Eyre river ... i just rode up it on a plated bike and had a fucken blast .

My Interpretation of adventure ride seem's to differ from yours... eat some rocks too harden up or just buy a Euro bike ...

I am at peace, open your eyes, where the hell do I say I'm worried about fording the Eyre??
I said stop fussing and just ride the trip. How does that sound like I'm worrying, I'm trying to tell everyone else to stop fussing.
Sheeesh

Assuming Sportzone run this ride like the last and knowing they have time constraints in the morning I think you'll find this will be more stopbanks and shingle roads than single track on the AM bit. One thing about the Waimak is that there are options.

As far as I can see riding up the Eyre to Oxford was never part of the plan as Lunch is in Springfield so why would you go to Oxford.
PS. I done the Eyre on the Transalp, the DR650, XR200, and my CRF. I know all about it too.

Nordie... Pinky has cameras too.

Right, the ride goes up the North Bank to the NORTHERN intake, onto the road and over the WAIMAK GORGE BRIDGE and on to SPRINGFIELD.
I have to cater for noobs and big adventure bikes (V-Strom etc) therefore shingle roads and easy trails ONLY! After lunch we return to the Waimak Gorge and ride the South Bank.
As per usual the thread has been Kiwibikerified!
If you want hardcore (Pinky) then go to the Suzuki sponsored trail rides and see how rough it gets there.
Nordie are you coming from Nelson to join us?
I ride a tard, it has Avon Distanzias so it goes ok in the dry but mudplugging isnt what I'm about, I've done that to death when I was spotty and built out of rubber!
The idea is to get a few peeps together for a nice cruisy day out in the sun.

Nope, I'd be very surprised if they do that, why go 10 extra kms North East to Oxford when you can just continue the 16 or so kms West to the Lunch meeting at Springfield and get gas there anyway.

In a couple of hours one of us will be proved correct and the other not.
