Police are investigating what appears to be a deliberate fishing line booby trap tied at head-height across a Hastings bridge.

A 34-year-old motorist, who did not want to be named, was heading home when he drove into the fishing line tied across the Riverslea Road bridge at 2.30am yesterday, Hawke's Bay Today reported.

The man did not see the wire in the dark until his windscreen struck it.

"It's bloody crazy. It was right at head-height. I just hit the brakes and put my hands up and all that," he said

"If it was someone else they could have just ploughed straight into the side of the bridge. It's insane."

Motorists who arrived at the scene shook their heads at "what if" a motorcyclist or cyclist had struck the nylon strands on the 100kmh stretch -- the wire could have injured or killed someone.

Senior Sergeant Luke Shadbolt said the incident was concerning and appealed for anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity in the area on Monday night to contact police.

I hit "a" fencing wire strung across a track we used to ride near Acacia bay near Taupo years back....I was lucky as at the last second I saw it & managed to slow down enough that it only ripped off the headlight on the XR & forcefully eject me backwards:shit:

After that genetic throw back hit the media the number of objects biffed off over bridges increased. Other than taking someone's life away, it probably cost us all well into the millions for all the barriers.

Not just there that kids are doing stupid shit, either.

Last week I was heading up the southbound onramp under Grafton Bridge here in Auckland... some bloody kid threw a giant road cone off the bridge and at my car! Aim sucked thank god (and thank god my brakes DON'T suck). Called the Police and for once they were there within 2 minutes, trying to find the little bastard(s).

It's bad enough in a car. It would have KOed a rider!!

So +1 with the law change, would happily pay for bullets with my taxes.
