Just spent a few milliseconds watching eNZed vs Wales ladies hockey game. There is NOBODY in the stadium. I shit you not, there's more spectators at my local fitbaw ground on a Saturday afternoon. Only signs of life are security guards and stewards. Ridiculous. You'd have thought they'd let the locals in for next to bugger all.

Wondering what all the poor bastards are going to do with all these plush stadiums they've funded.

All this crap about the poor old athletes having bad accomodation is pissing me off.

What about the poor locals who were kicked out of their homes and are now living in rubbish dumps or on the streets.
How would you guys feel if that was you?

I am boycotting it.:whocares:

Also is there anyone else here who finds opening ceremonies a crock of shit? They are all the fcuken same.

Personally I've always had problems with the amount of money poured into these things. I understand a country wanting to capitalise on tourist $ and world wide publicity (always in a good way, they hope). However I find it obscene what financial resources get poured into them when all that money would go such a long way to bettering the life of the citizens. Tourism goes a long way to bringing in cash but without infrastructure and satisfactory standard of living for the people who live there just who is benefitting from it all?

The money required to put on the public spectacles of opening and closing ceremonies for every Commonwealth and Olympic games could fund mega worthwhile causes within the nations they're performed.

Let athletes compete by all means. And I'm not suggesting they go back to the "bare basics" of the original concept from Greece....(although you blokies would be only too happy with that for events such as the beach volleyball for example - btw. I will never understand how that became an olympic games/comm games sport! :dodge: ) But why, especially in countries where atrocious poverty is such a huge reality, does all this $$ have to be wasted for "spectacle" where each country is really only trying to outdo the last?

1. It's hockey
2. It's women's hockey
3. It's NZ vs Wales

And you are seriously wondering why nobody is turning up?

I doubt they could even sell seats to this fixture if it was held in New Zealand.

If its in a city with 16 million inhabitants then I would expect the gate price to be reasonable enough that a few thousand of them would be sat spectating.

Maybe they mean the swimming is synchronised to the music?

In which case, I could be a competitor, but the music would have to be thrash metal or something so my unco flailing would match (or you couldn't tell it didn't).

So it occured to me watching the decathlon shot-put event tonight with hardly a spectator in sight that you could almost have as part of the commentary "...and the spectator goes wild!" It then occured to me that their equivalent of the Mexican Wave would be the two spectators waving to each other from opposite sides of the stadium. My daughter sent me a txt earlier suggesting the cycling would be better if it were like the Super Mario Cart racing where the competitors can throw bombs at each other or grow super size and flatten their opponant. Speaking of cycling ... saw the Aussie winner of whatever race it was and she wins the gold medal for the most prominent camel-toe. Could almost use it as a bike-stand! Gold medal effort there.

Oh the injustice of it all (http://nz.sports.yahoo.com/commonwealth-games/news/article/-/8107893/upset-williams-trapped-bizarre-200m-tiff), as a kiwi gal gets into her final, then because they change the time of the race, she decides to pack her bags and come home... why would you not run in the final? Kinda makes a mockery of going over there in the first place, let alone all of the training etc...

EDIT: On a totally different subject, be very careful when posting from an iPhone the word NZ directly followed by is, as it will auto correct to NAZIS leaving your post looking decidedly un-savoury DAMHIK

Synchronised swimming is not a sport and should not be in the (any) games.

In fact any competition that is judged should not be considered a sport. e.g. gymnastics, surfing etc

A sport must be won by being first or faster or stronger etc. Should not be open to interpretation.

In my opinion.

The Commonwealth games concept is well past its used by date.

So you don't believe the following Commonwealth Games events are actually sports?

Hockey, Rugby, Netball, Wrestling, Boxing etc

All of the above are interpreted by referees and/or judges.

Lets not get too serious, but rugby and netball should not be at the games. No team sports should be. Same as the Olympics. Should be athletics and swimming only.

And ladies gymnastics for obvious reasons.

I dont think its all done and dusted. These New Delhi games are just an example of a really bad show or entertainment.

Kiwi's got bugger all precoverage or marketing except dirty accomodation stories constantly run prior etc in the media, almost none of our athletes were introduced to NZers through interview or article.

Our $ driven media fucked up by not finding fiscal reasons or sponsors to run these stories or highlight our sporting hero's.

Same as the Indian authorities for failing to put bums on seats.

Major fail TVNZ:angry: or maybe the commonwealth games committee are the root problem.

BTW where the fuck did they find the staff:facepalm::sick: who are covering 'this event'

That's different. There the referees and/or judges are just making sure the rules are followed correctly. It's still about who (or which team) is better at doing the thing that they are meant to do: punch harder, pass a ball without dropping it, ...

Even in a sprint, you need judges to see if someone jumped the mark. In the longer races the judges make sure people stay in their lanes. In the swimming the judges make sure the strokes are, um, stroked correctly. And so on.

That's quite different to the kind of subjective point scoring judging that he was talking about.

(Though I'm a little on the fence about the boxing...)

Quite correctly, the Olympic and also the Commonwealth name these gatherings "games".

To quote (http://thinkexist.com/quotation/there_are_only_three_sports-bullfighting-motor/145019.html) Hemmingway “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely games".

Sadly, the sponsors have been heard and games like rugby, golf, tennis and basketball have been included.:weird::rolleyes:

What pzpkfw said.
The refs in Rugby don't decide how many points a try is worth based on style or how many tackles were broken now do they?

No. But they constantly have to make subjective decisions such as whether a try has been scored, and whether the run of play constitutes playing advantage.

Most major events now (World Cups, Olympics, Games even F1) are a convoluted form of theft.
Hosting countries spend large amounts of (tangible) public funds to prepare and host an event on the promise of larger amounts of (intangible) future earnings due to spin off benefits.
It creates an industry.
The people working hardest (athletes) get FA. The organisers and their shady friends get the lions share.

Having used tax payers money to put the event on, they have the cheek to charge admission.

The fuss created is a distraction from the fact that your money is being squandered.

India is left with lots of lovely facilities built in the fastest cheapest way so the rest can be pocketted. They will be falling down in 10 years.

Pretty hard choice between watching a mediocre peice of entertainment and spending your cash on trying to feed your family India. They voted with their feet.

Watch what happens with the Rugby World Cup. The NZ public will be castigated by the media and organisers for not turning up. They won't ever consider that what constitutes excitment for them (large profits) isn't shared by the general public.

I know this is a Comm Game thread, but:
Several weeks ago I read of the RWC organisers castigating (hope you don't mind if I borrow the word - it's a good one!) hopeful accommodation providers in Auckland and elsewhere for promoting "irresponsible profiteering". From that, I took it that responsible profiteering by the RWC organisation and friends is OK...
And then they asked for volunteers to help run the event!
Ah well, never mind, I'm off to have a look at a collection of Japanese Classics. :sunny:
