He's very much like Jeremy Clarkson - a wise-cracking loud-mouth who occasionally crosses the line with the glib off-the-cuff opinions. This is one of those occasions.
He'll be suitably contrite and it'll blow over.

X 2 in fact we were discussing the Governor General issue this morning, it was universally agreed that he was quite possibly the most innefectual and virtually invisible one we've ever had. The only one that stands out to me was Dame Cath Tizard, at least she got out and about and promoted NZ etc. According to Stuff's website http://www.stuff.co.nz/entertainment/tv/4197611/Paul-Henry-suspended, Mr Henry will be back on air on the 18th of this month, so a nice little holiday for him and a chance to enjoy the nice weather

Easy to solve, revert to English aristocrats as Governer Generals, so they can keep an eye on this distanced colony.
Dressed in tweed and monocled! Bernard Ferguson was a splendid Governer General, a man of character.
I disagree about Tizard, like her ex husband, coarse.

Youve got it wrong, its a family feud going on between the royals, they have a few teutonic cuzzies! Bernard was a splendid chap and a man of the people. Id like to propose a radical solution, the Duke of Edinburgh for GG, my sort of guy and he redefines total political incorrectness. He is also a Maggie T fan ( unlike his wife who saw her as a competitor ), I like that wonderful quality.

The truth about what though? His original statement wasn't truthful, it was wrong and based purely on an assumption he made based on the colour of the Governor Generals skin.
The Governor General was born and raised here, educated in Glen Innes and has spent his entire life working in the public service as well as contributing to numerous community groups and Rugby League administration. He also speaks with a very heavy Kiwi accent, and from all account is a good bugger.
Whereas Henry was shipped off to England at a young age to be 'educated' went to Drama School and worked for the BBC.
Tell me, why is the Governor General any less a Kiwi than Henry?

I do have a chuckle sometimes when he says some shit. He acts like a school boy on occasion when he just carries on with things for a little too long but that's one of the reasons people watch the show. Hell, you wouldn't watch that show if you hated Henry.
Watch TV3 for god's sake if you have issues! BUT I think it probably did take it a little too far with the Governor General. I thought he was just gonna ask if a kiwi was gonna be selected next and then leave it. But he certainly hammered away at it.
Eh, I think it's the best way for the country to loosen up being too PC. If he keeps saying shit like this we'll get used to it like the good 'ole days.

If you are born in New Zealand and are raised in New Zealand then you are a New Zealander, whether you are second generation Jamaican, third generation English, fifth generation Chinese or tenth generation Maori. What you look like has no bearing on nationality in this big old melting pot where the whole country is founded on immigrants. I understand what Paul Henry was saying, the GG doesn't look like your typical Maori or British descended person, and to a redneck that means they can't be a New Zealander but clearly that is not the case.
Still, he's a funny bloke. I think it was all a wind up to see how John Key would cope and that was an obvious fail. Me, I'd vote for John Tamihere for GG.

It's the politically correct fuckwits who are turning this country into a joke. They want to wrap kids in cotton wool and ban free speech, then they wonder why we feel like we're living in less and less of a democracy by the day.
People getting their knickers in a twist over this is just like someone running to the KB mods every time someone gives them red rep or disagrees with a post. I bet that most of these 'fun police' members don't even have a proper job, so they feel the need to complain about nothing to make themselves feel important.

Why the phuck can black people bust out the 'race card' at will, and if a white person complains, they are immediately labeled as a racist, whereas if a white person were to bust out the race card there has to be a huge outcry?
Actually I agree there is often an imbalance of standards in too many cases. Doesn't make it less racist though, if you ask me. Whether Henry or Hone, it's still no good.

... Quoted comment now in PD.
So bearing in mind that there are no 100% full blooded Maori any more, is it the Maori blood or the European blood that causes the high crime rate? Or could it be that people in low socio economic situations are more prone to crime whatever their ethnicity?

AFAIK Henry was (as always) 'trying' to be funny - a wind up to see how JK would handle it (as someone mentioned earlier).
Ok - he may have overstepped the mark but that often happens with 'humour'.
Hone on the other hand......not trying to be funny and pretty blatant, and you know he believes every word of it.
And yes I enjoy jokes based on race. Even ones poking fun of my race...if you can't laugh at yourself eh.....Some may say that it a slippery slope from racist jokes to tension and violence etc but many would just say get over it. Its a fucken joke FFS.

However, the point that PH (I think) was trying to make is: Should the appointment of the GG be an exercise in affermative action / social engineering? Because if you really think that ethnicity had nothing to do with Satchathingy's appointment, I have a bridge for sale...I reckon our current GG is probably lucky there were no non-white gay candidates.

Right on. :Punk:
The idea that criticism of Paul Henry arises from "political correctness" is garbage. It has nothing to do with pc.
The fact is the guy is on national breakfast television where he can belittle others who are not there to defend themselves. This is not Paul Henry saying something in the pub or at the dinner table where he can be as offensive as he likes.
By contrast Newsboy (Jeremy Wells) gets away with much edgier material and no-body gets upset. Why? For one thing Eating Media Lunch is on later at night away from children, and Newsboy has style: just the right combination of cheek and innocence to avoid crassness.
As for Hone Harawira et al - what makes you think what he says is alright?? There has been plenty of critical comment over the years for things he has said and he's come close to being suspended from the Maori Party.

Even though he can be an annoying snot....I like what he says and well, Mr Fijian/Indian may well have been born in Auckland, but he so does not "look" like a Kiwi. But then again, what is a Kiwi (not the bird one).
This country has changes somewhat over the last 30 years...we are a melting pot of nationalities and some of us over 40's do need to change our outlook....I know when I went to school there was only a handful of non-white children there:shit:.
Nowadays, the schools are full of many varied cultures, it's time to embrace them all.

I love the distinct mood of those "red" pricks protesting the other day, and it's slightly come up in this thread - "You have freedom of speech to an extent/until it offends me and my ideals"... How is that freedom of speech at all? I guess it's better to be a fascist than racist...

Hardly colonial Oscar.... or have you forgotten my fine heritage? :bleh:

I guess - if you look different to perceived norms, there'll always be some nincompoop having a go at you - it's about time people realised NZ ain't an exclusively euro-centric culture with a token maori component any more, pull their egos out of their arse, get used to it and get on with life.

I also think it's rank that maori politicians pulling similar but I believe far more premeditated and dangerous race card bullshit get treated with a ho hum poor them approach but things are VERY different if someone else has something to say.
I didn't like the apparent 'undertone' in what he said and I didn't appreciate the comment about Susan Boyle 'having the look of a retard' however his job isn't to be boring as shit, completely robotic and lacking in personality and guess what else...we don't even have to like or agree with him....ooooooooooooooo hard concept for so many to grasp...get the fuck over it already join a fricken knitting circle!
I reckon it was just a glib, brain not engaged, verbal diarrohea moment and even if he meant it like all the soft cocks have tried to infer he meant it so what? TVNZ sucks and frankly I find that guy and a few select others are the only interesting spots on the channel...breakfast loses all it's appeal without him and my mornings are far more mundane and less engaged.
Getting all up and arms about what a dude on tv's personal thoughts and possible opinions might be is kinda sad. It's just the cheeky darky comment all over again. I'll admit I wondered similar when Sir A was appointed GG myself...not like I was mixing in circles that had awareness of his Lawyering and Judging and other high faluting achievements and contributions to NZ.
I say bring him back and if you don't like it = learn something about yourself from that and either switch the channel or chill the fuck out!

Nah, but then after 14 years in New Zealand I have only heard Te Reo Maori being spoken once, and that was on a marae.
All of us on here have ancestors who were subjugated by invaders. Go back to the English, Spaniards and Portuguese, or the Vikings, Normans, Mongols or the Romans, and Picts etc. History in the new world is just more recent. The Australian Aborigines suffered terribly, tens of thousands of years of culture just wiped out. Truly shocking what happened to them. My comment was related to my personal view of NZ as an outsider. You have race based sports teams and race based political groups which to me seems divisive. I don't believe a country will truly progress and have different races and cultures living in harmony while you have this officially sanctioned apartheid.

I find it disparaging to know that a good proportion of NZers, if not a majority, seem to find public ridicule the best form of entertainment.
In my mind you have to either think that both Paul Henry and Hone Harawira are entitled to their free speech or they are both racists and should be sacked. If you think one is but not the other then you are a hypocrit. IMO they are both racists and should be sacked, unfortunately the people who control Hone's job and priviledges are also racists(Maori Party) or gutless pussies (National Party). But because one person is not punished for their bad deeds doesn't mean we should let our standards slip either. Given though that where Henry's was thoughtless and juvenille, Hone's was intent with malice which was worse.
SMOKEU as far as I knew PC s a phrase used to depict when social idealism suggested you shouldn't tell people they are failing at all/Everyone wins etc. Fortunately the majority saw thought that ridiculous idea and cast it out. But your use of the term seems to draw parallels that PC is when you are telling someone they are failing without mocking them rather than telling them they are not failing when they are.

On the Paul Henry front (original topic). I hardly think he represents anything new. He is in the same mould as any old shock-jock on the radio (or John Tamihere, or Michael Laws, or Hone Harawira). Sort of like the noisy naughty kid at the back of the class who just likes the attention. He doesn't say anything that isn't said on the Family Guy or South Park, it's just a little more localised. I bet you the majority of people calling for him to be banned don't watch his show anyway. He's good for ratings so he's sure to stay. Infact, I think he at least gets this stuff out in the open so we can talk about it, better than it just being mumbled behind your hand and pretending you like people to their face.
Does he say 'what we all think'? Well, I guess I hope not, but who knows. Is being offensive for the sake of it really the key human quality that we respect? It's not as if it's hard to be offensive.

I took this assumption from my memories of primary school history lessons, so I am happy to admit that I may well be wrong.
In the 1830s Kororāreka won a dubious reputation as the ‘hell-hole of the Pacific’, where prostitution, grog shops and drunken brawls were common. Most respectable observers were appalled. John Dunmore Lang described its inhabitants as ‘the veriest scum of civilised society’; James Busby noted that the whalers were open to ‘every temptation and opportunity for licentiousness’; and William Colenso claimed that the place was ‘notorious for containing a greater number of rogues than any other spot of equal size in the universe.’
Maybe they were just too drunk to write?

At the end of the day:
1) thats why he has the job - he creates controversy
2) Live tv and radio shows have producers that can tell the presenters to stop if their making a cock-up. Henry was left to carry on, ergo it was ok with the bosses.
Not defending Henry, but there are other players involved pulling strings.

The racist comments I take with a grain of salt, as has been said, the Maori party members have said far far worse.

I reckon the whole kerfuffle over Paul Henry is ludicrously laughable! Yes, he's an idiot and childish but he's no threat to anyone and wouldn't hurt a fly! Some people need to get over themselves and get a life! I noticed the ever-present John Minto on the protest line... Are people becoming more reactionary these days, or is it just me..? Even the good Governer himself took it in good humour at the time! The whole beat-up is pathetic!

Without having read any of the posts that have gone before...
Paul Henry made some poor choices around dissing that name. He was told how it was pronounced and chose to take a different path and make an english call on the spelling. That was done for ratings, but was very poorly called. He would have got away with it however, if he had not drawn his personaly spin on how someone looks. Very unfortunate. I blame his employer for not laying down better lines.
Paul Henry is a funny guy, he pushes the envelope of what is acceptable.
The reaction to this astounds me. He wass a naughty boy, he loses 2 weeks pay, no doubt that will bite. To keep this issue going is simply increasing his value to TVNZ.

Hmmm see interesting that as I just watched an indian debate about it and they are pronouncing it DICKSHIT and not when making comments about how Paul said it..seems the pronunciation was on the money it was the joking about that and the whole 'inference about India being shit' that was considered offensive
...I'm wondering if it's just the spelling that is Dixit.
ALSO I sense all this is just a media orgy anyway...it started apparently with the GG stuff and now they are all busy dredging up previously 'poor taste' but clearly not quite enraging enough to the sensitives at the time. ...Drama - oh how we loves it eh

Watch breakfast closely for the whole programme. Not many get to do it.
It starts very news, business and weather oriented. There are quasi intelligent bits with interviews with the PM, or some other expert. No doubt aimed at those getting up to go to a job.
Next comes the cross-over section, where they still have the news, but cross to live feeds from christchurch where there's an Al-Paca conference.
Then the shift becomes even more obvious. Review of womens magazines (girls are you seriously not ashamed and embarrased by these mags?), crosses to hollywood to hear from some camp gossip queen, or an interview with someone about new gadgets, makeups, fashion trends etc.
The bang it's onto that show straight afterwards which I can't even look at, and before you know it its coro street, infomercials, jeremy kyle and all sorts of other utter garbage.
Solution! Reverse it around. People watch too much news, so the smart people with jobs will thing "fuck it I'll go for a jog instead of watching Jeremy Kyle", and the trailer trash will not be able to get up early enough for their fix and the news + business etc will be too hard for them so they also will have to get off the couch and do something like exercise, education, baking, or getting a job. Win-win.
Come on TVNZ you have a social responsibility - stop feeding the parasites feeding off the cathode tube / LCD radiation - take away their mindless mush they feed their brain and force them to watch something educational or intellectual, or they can fuck off and actually do something.
Arse shit fuck wank & pooh.

With the sense of humour of an eight-year-old, and no real journalistic interview skills, his loss can only improve the face of NZ television - as will the loss of his boycotting fans - a win-win situation...
With luck, a small corner of NZ television will rise above the ratings-based descent into the asinine and trivial.

Where in the world have you been? The Kahui twins occupied the nation's attention for months including discussion on here. There was certainly no silence. And the lad who died from alcohol poisoning got a great deal of public attention and comment as well. A tragedy for his family which resounded throughout the country.
Paul Henry losing his job for immaturity is inconsequential beside these tragedies.

Exactly my point, why all the fuss about a guy having a laugh - my reference was the fact that Paul's little cockup was the leading story and topic in the news this week when the other two stories which truly reflect that which is wrong in NZ to-day yet the protesters and letters to the editor are strangely absent.

...Although as he is not and never has been a journalist, perhaps it's a bit much to expect anything remotely resembling that standard from him...
A valid point. It says a lot about the TVNZ heirarchy who would often put him in the prime-time position of interviewing the most news-worthy. Unfortunately he was seldom able to rise above the level of antagonistic jibes and petty point-scoring.
Entertainment for the "Reality TV" generation...

Ok seems I can't get my message across - I see the other two issues that were subsequent to Paul Henry's situation on the news last night as actually being serious issues reflecting the sad state off affairs in NZ.
Paul Henry made a couple of comments that seem to have offended the righteous pink bloused brigade in NZ and in the scheme of things you all are just a bunch of politically correct tools.
For fucks sake one of the turban wearer's has just attempted to subvert our political system are you all jumping up and down about that,

Well no let's be more realistic here, Paul Henry would call a spade a retarded piece of equipment with a moustache if it didn't dig a hole, decorate his house and take out the garbage at the same time, all of it's own accord.

Seems like Paul has been the victim of bad timing. The Indians are all huffed up with indignation in an attempt to divert attention onto yet another Kiwi and away from their CG stuff-up. As I write, it looks like Paul has sucked the kumera and resigned. Pity really, I used to hate the little shit, but then got to appreciate him pushing the envelope.....and the frequent use of arrrrrse!

I gaurantee that if our prime ministers name was John Ghandu the indians would be pissing themselves. That maybe but if they did that on their National TV programme, They would need their Arses kicked too. Name one time in the last ten years that an Indian TV presenter took the piss out of any of our Leaders or Country Reps? Would be interesting if ya could.

The death of children, and such tragic similar situations should never be compared to Henrys childish remarks.
The Kahui case is being reported on everyday on the "world at noon".
It's in the hands of the coroner for the next month.
The news is out there, if people actually tune into reputable reporters.
A coroners decision will be "reported" by all in sundry, but the real journo's are doing it every day already.
The dumbing down of NZ reporting is directly related to what the people want to see/hear. Henry is tragic, because he has tragic supporters. MHO

What a crock. I am genuinely surprised at the reaction of people to this on a motorbike forum and elsewhere, and the amount of vitriol it has produced. It was light entertainment FFS, not investigative journalism.
The world has gone Ghandu all right.

IMO Paul Henry was paid to speak his mind and be controversial with TVNZ's tacit (and maybe even on the quiet, explicit) approval. Anyone who thinks Paul Henry hasn't been paid a substantial amount of money to resign and not reveal TVNZ's part in this matter is being very naive.
I expect he's giggling all the way to the Bank.

a sad day for "free" TV.
"Free TV" is an oxymoron with TVNZ. They are the voicepiece of the politicians from Wellington and as such are not "free".
If PH had been on TV3 he wouldn't have been fired (or forced to resign). TVNZ has just shown how bound to the "public purse" they truly are.
Listening to the radio instead of watching TV1 Breakfast, was very nice indeed.
Let's hope he is picked up by TV3 and starts another breakfast show on that channel.

It's a no brainer to me.I think he is a dick so I simply don't watch him.
I was starting to cut him some slack lately, making allowances for his crappy comments as it could be said that it does get some topics out in the open..... NZ is too pc now after all....... But, that clinches it for me,now I just see him as a pureile little gnome.
The racist comments I take with a grain of salt, as has been said, the Maori party members have said far far worse.
What tipped it for me was the childish giggling at the womans name, what a knob.
I call a spade a spade, so I will call Paul an idiot. Good riddance.
I just happen to like all of the above.
I tend to find the best option for me is to just turn the channel else where.
Paul Henry is pretty much a childish little man and i have little or no time for him.
It's not so much the free speech thing that is the problem, it's the racial implications that are the issue for me. As well as the infantile comments made about peoples looks and or intellect.
I'm not even too sure weather i remember having people at primary school who were quite as inadequate is this man.
What i would ask is, if he was pointing his prongs at one of us, would we react the same. It all seems very funny when the comments get slammed into someone else, but if it was one of us that he was directing his idiocy at, would we be saying the same.
I think not!

Yeah .. Paul Henry was an idiot ... and not for the first time. If I was still working in the media I would not trust him in front of a live camera or with a live microphone ... he was totally racist and a dick .. I'm pleased he's gone ...
On the other hand - the Indian Government should butt out of our affairs ... if Anand Satyanand is a New Zealander then he is a New Zealander and it has nothing to do with the Indian Government - just because we have a GG BORN in NEW ZEALND ... who happens to be of Indian descent .. this is nothing to do with India and they should have been told to BUTT OUT and should not have received an apology ...

True but I think they apologised for the giggling idiot's ridiculing of their diplomats name!
I could be wrong about that of course!
They should have just ignored the whole issue, if Henry wants to make a cunt of himself that's OK with me, as ye sow then shall ye reap, sort of style!
As I said earlier, this country is too damned PC precious, FFS!

Got to love all this anti Henry bravado.
Pretty keen to give him shit. Well what about a face to face debate against the man himself?
Up for it?
More quick witted?
More intelligent?
More articulate?
I didn't think so.

Ghandu means the equivalent of faggot in kiwi speak, or literraly I think it is "from the arse".
I'm sure that if our Prime Minister's name was John From The Arse, there would be comments.
How those comments would manifest themselves is pure speculation of course, but I suggest that laughing at someones name is pretty entrenched in a lot of people, wherewas looking at a transgender person probably illicicits a bit of rational thought before saying anything.
Nice day for it.

Never had a huge problem with any of his comments, even the dikshit thing was actually not that bad. Except his governer general call which was hilariously stupid and totally wrong. He was a complete knob saying that, and you have to wonder why the PM didn't dress him down straight away.
