Occasionally when I'm accelerating the bike revs will continue to go up but the speedo stays the same. As this is my first road bike I'm not sure but it almost seems like the clutch is slipping

Clutch is slipping - any free play at the lever (ie can you pull the clutch lever a bit before you feel the load of the clutch cable?

It could be a faulty tacho or speedo unless the bike is still accelerating.

If there is smoke coming from the rear tyre then congratulations! You have just mastered the technique of doing a burnout! (Assuming that the speedo drive is from the fronthwheel)

Could also be electrical......when a coil starts breaking down it'll do this.
