I've only had dealings with the Forest and Bird people through the Scout troop - having them come in to talk with the kids - and the ones who work for them seem to be genuine. The problem is with the proselytisers.

In all seriousness, my big issue is the ones who view the selling of the organisation as a religious crusade. They give me the shits. The ones at the coalface are busy trying to make a difference.

Alright..... wood pigeons are supposed to taste nice..... positively yummy but frankly I prefer possum... Hind quarters off a young un, careful not to snick the glands and boil with onions until flesh comes off bones... Nooice!

Strange - a stack of Forest and Bird magazines landed on the lunchroom table today. We used to belong to Forest and Bird some years ago, they did good things I reckon. They got Bell Birds back on Waiheke Island,I'd never seen or heard one before.Pukeko's are the only native bird we don't have to worry about losing.

I don't know about paying for it.Other people do all the work unpaid so I can walk in the bush and listen to Tui's and pukeko's.The smile on my face is all the reward they need.

Went for a stroll through some wetland bush we replanted 5 to 7 years ago (so many planting days - so many different places - so many wet pairs of undies)

Amazing - nearly a full canopy, great days work for the troops who were all blown away.

Twig and Tweet don't generally proselytise. On this occasion -- protecting the environmental values of the Mackenzie Basin -- I think their cause is a just and righteous one. Landscape values are important and should be considered as part of the mix for any development or environmental intervention.

....all cool for them to promote their ideals....perfect world and all that....love the ideals they promote...greenpeace hardmen, eco greenie crews....hero's....its also where they choose to be in life...good on them...im not green in my politics , but im a damn sight greener than a heap of hypocritical greenies i know...like any other organisations of humans, be it a m/c racing club or a school committee, theres always going to be , those who do the work and those who pay lip service...the ones who pay lip service are the dangerous pricks who will sign petitions and have public meetings about such stuff as...'NO WAY,' to a small piece of fairly useless, rural land land being used as a training area for teaching kids off road motorcycle skills or some such activity, because its environmentally unfriendly or a danger to some fairly common nz flea...hippie feelings in a strictly commercial , P fukn C world...idealism increases exponentially the further one is from the problem...i hear....

Personally, I have no time for F & B. I dislike their quasi-political status. They are not elected, and do not represent all New Zealanders, and yet they seem to be hand in glove with DOC, a gvmt department. I am happy for them to be a lobby group for their members, but they seem to receive government support, too? It doesn't seem correct to me. I think they have far too much "say" in issues, relative to their membership.

At least they have a democratically elected executive accountable to a New Zealand membership. Unlike Greenpeace.
