View Full Version : How a "PowerBand" works on a 2 Stroke
White trash

Right-Oh n00bs, here's the skinny.
On your two stroke motorcycle, under the tank you'll find a dense little black cylinder, approx half the size of a red bull can screwed firmly to the frame by a couple of bolts. It will have a couple of little skinny coloured wires going in one end and a big thick one out the other end and going to your spark-plug.
This is the coil.
It does however, also contain the PowerBand which is why it's so dense if you remove it. The PowerBand is similar in its design to a golf ball. Essentially, there is one of those really thick rubber bands wound up tight as all hell in there. This rubber band if removed and stretched out would be about 30 feet long so leave it in there. You can, however, make noticeable changes to your 2 strokes power by fitting the PowerBand from another model. Suzuki A50 PowerBands fitted to my VJ21 RGV250 made it wheelie off the throttle in 3rd gear easily. I also removed the mufflers to aide performance and you can easily spin the wheel out of turn 1 at Manfeild once this has been done.
Hope this helps in your "Google Quest" for PowerBand info retard.

Mine were grey but maybe, yeah. It's worth mentioning that you need 2 A50s to get 2 powerbands. Unless you want to just replace the one RGV item for a little less savage power delivery. You need to add 1 HT lead to the A50 if you do this as the RGV only has one coil, 2 leads.

Will my powerband wear out over time? And if it does, could I just cut the outer shell off a golf ball and put the rubber banding inside in as a replacement? Should that be the case, could you recommend a suitable golf ball?

Yep...you'll want a 'balata' type golf ball for a nice soft powerband, or a top quility 'distance' ball for a hard hitting powerband that goes the extra few km's

Actually harder than you may think. You have to fit a 2 stroke head to your 4 stroke to make a 6 stroke. Ask Shervin, I think he's doing the conversion on his ZX10........

Thinking about it further, I'm sure if you fitted a powerband backwards, the power would diminish with revs. I'm sure Honda do this on purpose in order for their buyers not to get scared of the potential when riding.

Your full of shit.
Power band is the thing that holds your testicles together.
2-strokes have a very tight power band, so you can hang really big balls off them. As you get older your balls begin to shrivel up, so it is recommended that you change your bike to first a very peaky 4 stroke. This has a slightly wider power band, so you can flap you sack in the wind and feel young again.
Then when your balls are tiny you need a very wide power band - so you change to a Harley, a diesel or similar. The wide power band, and the small balls means you can tuck your nuts into your socks.
It is a good idea to ride in groups at this stage, as all your tiny balls add up to one big set - and you can scare off predators.

Take one golf ball as a bored child, go to your fathers extensively stocked workshop, place golf ball in vice, grab one of your fathers saws that isn't suited for the job, and cut the shell off the golf ball. Initially you will find lots of rubberbands, and after removing what seems like a mile or two rubber strips, you will find the bounciest ball in the world.
Oh how so many of my fathers golf balls would go missing.

If anyone is interested I have a set of new, old stock powerbands for an H2R Kawasaki 750. As you can imagine if you are aware of the legendary H2R powerband, these aren't small so won't suit sub 250cc bikes and may be a tight fit even in some bigger bikes.
At this stage looking to sell as a set, but may consider separating them if I can find buyers for all three.
Attached is a pic of the neighbours kid holding one so you can get an idea of size. Note that it is still in it's FedEx wrapping from when I purchased them (ex-TKA), all three still have intact wrapping and are ready to bolt on and go. Expressions of interest invited. Genuine buyers will be aware of the value of these hard to find parts. Be warned, these are not for the faint of heart.
Wrapping is signed by Kork Ballington, Greg Hansford, Murray Sayle and Neville Doyle and as such are collectors items in their own right.

It is commonly known that from time to time manufacturers stumble across the perfect mix and a batch is produced that is superior to anything else on the market.
When this happens the manufacturing mafia come knocking and the recipe is 'improved' to bring things back in line.
Think Castrol R. The old stuff was magical.
Anyway, this has happened with golf balls. A previous poster has been wise enough to preserve three and knows their worth. But. There is an untapped resourse.
Golf courses around the world have water hazards which are full of these old wonders. Naturally because they were so much better a light putt sent them streaking across the green and into the water - thereby driving up sales.
SO time to plan an assult on your local course. It will be cold. The older better balls will be down in the sludge and muck. It will be dangerous. You will need to dress in foolish clothing to blend in.
I however wish to offer the services of faithful Scuba Hound. Especially trained to sniff super balls even under water.
He costs 4 steaks and hour and my commision of a large bottle of Jack Daniels.

....pretty cool bit of thought gone in there ,BUT....if we are to lead the world in this technology, we need to sort out a system for balancing the balls to each specific POWERBAND requirement ...whether the manufacturers of the high end golf balls would agree to this stringency in their approach to regulating ball inspections in the workplace and ensuring a completely uniform ball left the assembly line is doubtful....it will in the end be left to the individual to decide upon which manufacturer they choose to go with....in the end the golf ball manufacturers tussle for track supremacy will probably end up with MotoGP being dominated by very small capacity TWO STROKES and a demise of the DUCATI marque as a serious bike manufacturer...

Cant be bothered reading it all but how is the GP bike beating Hyosung doing? I seem to remember the lap times on the low 30s at Manfeild? About 10 seconds off the MVX so he's getting close.......
So he is actually doing it! (be that slowly...). Have to take my hat off to the guy. He is doing more than many others on KB with big plans.

It's a good industry to be in, recycling used power bands into golf balls.
