View Full Version : What has happened to Mt Eden Motorcyles?

Tried to book my bike in for a service and it seems they may have closed. If so it is a real shame. There seem to be some rumours going around but nothing confirmed.

I always found Chris and Mike great to deal with and have always gotten great service from there. I did have some issues with the service dept itself (and there are posts from others on this) but was happy to keep going back.

Damn - not sure of the Kwaka dealers up this way- although I understand Mt Eden had lost its Kawasaki license anyway.

Cant comment as to whats going on with them, but Red Baron are a Kawa dealer, and ive always been pleased with their service dept, and they have the added bonus of a dyno. Just make sure you check ya bill though, sometimes they overcharge for silly things.. other than that, thumbs up :)

Apparently they moved to a new site 5 minutes up the road. I walk past the site everyday, and asked one of the guys as they were loading up a trailer.

I called in there about 3 weeks ago and was surprised to see they had packed up just about everything. I spoke to Mike and he said they were hoping to move into cheaper premises (I think he said in Grey Lynn or Ponsonby), but nothing was signed up yet. Doesn't look promising... :(

I'd say if their telephone number is not working then it is looking bad ... most companies keep their phone number, even if only for a little while, when they shift.

I go past their old shop every day on my way home and observed things getting packed up, I just assumed they were moving to new premises. Strange that the telephone number isn't redirecting...
Surely it doesn't take that long to get a new place up and running? When my company moved it was done over a weekend and production never halted...

No updates on their website or listings on trademe, looks kind of damning

It still rang but there was no answer and didn't hear the usual "press 1 for sales, 2 for workshop" etc message that you normally get. Then when I was down in the weekend I drove past and noticed the place was empty.

If they are relocating then all good, although you would think they would update the website.

Not that it means too much, but the company is still registered, and renewed that registration in May this year. There is no notice of liquidation (which means they haven't been *forced* out of business, but could have chosen to simply shut down).

Maybe Holeshot or AMPs are going to take them on again. Can't see Colemans or Red Baron doing them unless RB loses Kawasaki now that Experience has them. Think Haldanes would do a good job with them, would sit nicely between Suzuki and Ducati brands. But there again what the f**k do i know

It means even less than not too much - it means absolutely nothing at all. Registered companies don't have to trade. Receivership and liquidation can take a looooong time.

As mentioned earlier, Mt Eden Motorcycles Ltd will not be trading as a new motorcycles sales in the near, and probably ever future.
Experience BMW have picked up the Kawasaki brand and the Aprilia/Moto Guzzi brands have been picked up by another Auckland dealer which I,or they will announce next month.

Well that sucks!
Having been down this road myself, I know about 1% of what Mike must be feeling.
To put your hart and sole into a business and have it fold around you hurts.
I was keeping bikes I have owned alive with the parts Mike sold me since I was about 13 years old!
Brought a couple of bikes from him over the years too…
It’s a shame to lose another bike shop.
I know he would have fought it to the end, and I hope we’ll see him back behind a counter soon.

Where do we stand now?
Considering the closed doors of the shops we used to haunt.
We have AMPS, BMW, Red Barron, Colman’s and the place in New Market, with half a dozen scoot shops in Auckland.
Suzuki and Honda on the Shore, Botany Honda out south
Treads and Motomail doing gear,
Bout 1.5 million in Auckland and just a handful of bike shops?
ACC may soon get their wish, if we can’t buy them, we can’t ride them!

Sorry if I overlooked anyone!

Who wants to open the best motorbike shop not in Auckland but the world with me??

We'll sell all the coolest bikes. None'o this Hyo sushi shit.

We'll have the sexiest bikini clad models assisting the customers and salesmen. They'll be required to wheel the bike out for you when you buy it and pose so you can take some tasty photos for your new photo album.

We'll recruit the best mechanics and give them all the tools.

We'll have a race track out the back with a mini underground tunnel that will help you hear that screaming engine.

We'll have a membership system where you gotta lap our track under a certain time whereby you'll become worthy of our discounts.

The driveway to our showroom would have swooping fast turns and flames spitting out the side.

What has a deer and a fish got to do with it?Maybe they should have sold some bikes.

There's BikeSport in Helensville and the shop in Kumeu that mainly does dirt bikes and the shops in Warkworth - they all draw customers from the wider region

There is a long history of motorcycles on that site - Bill Russell had their workshop down stairs in 1980 at least, not sure when the moved there....but soon went back to their own shop, maybe it was just temporary for a refit? Peter was across the road in an old house with Mt Eden Motorcycle Wreckers, and moved into the top floor the same year, later taking over the whole building.George Tervitt had a car yard on the corner, and this was taken over a few years ago when Mt Eden Motorcycles punched out the wall and expanded.

It was a real hub of motorcycle activities for many years - Laurie Summers and Bill Russell across the road from each other, and Mt Eden Motorcycle Wreckers around the corner.I worked at Boston Motors in 1980,right in the thick of it.

Well I have just been told by someone who is an old friend of one of the partners in Mt Eden Motorcycles that a downturn in the motorcycle market was NOT the reason for closure. I'm not sure if its kosher to blab on here so thats all I will say...

Suffice to say... its a bloody shame and shouldn't have happened.
