View Full Version : Newby-friendly Raglan adv ride - 3, 4, 5 December

Ok gang, another newby adv ride around the Raglan area is under way in December.:woohoo:
Plan is to make your way to the Kopua Holiday Camp Ground,
http://www.raglanholidaypark.co.nz/Raglan-Kopua-Holiday-Park/Welcome-to-Raglan-Kopua-Holiday-Park_IDL=1_IDT=3819_ID=21978_.html,
and settle in for drinkies on Fri night.
Various food options are available, from greasies, through to quality dining, (Waikato Style).
A quick stagger across a bridge has you smack bang in downtown Raglan.
Saturday morning, the ride will be a mix of gravel and seal riding, (so that new to adv rides arn't intimidated).:scooter:
Some sight seeing at various stop offs.
The afternoon will take in various roads to other interesting areas, including the option of "Slippery Creek".
Some of us know this little area as an ego burster, but there is no need to challenge yourself if you feel that it might be a bit much, as the road is now repaired.
Saturday night will see us back at the Kopua Camp, (so there is no need to lug all your gear on the Sat ride).
Sunday will be another relaxed morning of riding, before we all start to split for home.:wavey:
I have secured two tourist flats at the Kopua ground, but if you want other accom, like tent sites, please book sepereatly.
My accom booking has room for about ten people.
The backpacker accom is fully booked out, but kitchen cabins and one Motel unit is still available,so don't take too long.
There is other accomodation in Raglan if the campground books out of what you need, so contact the local infomation centre.
No worries with fuel supply, even for smallish tanks. If you can get 100kms from a tank, you will be sweet.
There are very experienced muppets on this ride, to help with any flat tyres etc, :2thumbsupbut please work out your own tube/chain link/tool kit etc requirements.
Also, please post your attendance on the Calendar link
http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=2658&day=2010-12-4&c=all
If you have to pull out of attending the ride, please delist your name in the calendar.
This is a social get together. NOT an organised event.
Please understand that you are responsible for your own actions, and that the areas we will be travelling in are public access areas.
No liability will be accepted by myself.
So, let the general chatter and trash talk start.
Ask any newby Q's you like, oh KTM riders are responsible for dishes, chain lubing, and any slave labour required.:innocent:
As you were.:sunny:

not having done one of these rides before -would there be any problems with only doing half a day on the sat? I'm simply not fit enough to do the full day, but the experience would be good.
I don't agree with this idea of KTM rriders being the general slave labour either.

IMHO Half days are cool, always good to meet fellow KBers.
normally the only slave labour is pushing other KTMs
as for not fit enough.... that describes half of us  i normally struggle to get my fat arse home after a 3dayer.
summer coming up so quite often theres day and half day rides out towards the coast

Hi tinlizzie:sunny:
The ride is very adaptable, my partner kanny has given me strict instructions to make it fun and enjoyable for those less experienced, so think of it as fun with a few optional bits thrown in.
There will be breaks for refreshments etc and absolutely no pressure to ride at anything above what you feel comfortable with.
Only selected KTM riders will be chosen for slave labour:shifty: (they know who they are)

Yeah I know how hard it can be. Young family and shift work means I have to prioritise my time off and can't do all the rides I would like. Now that one of my boys is showing more interest in riding his motorbike it means I'll get out more on the 525 at least. :)
I won't be doing this ride as I'm working :(

It is getting a bit tricky to get on site at the moment.:crybaby:
Because it is still in construction phase, a full site induction would be required, this may put a end to type of visit we were working towards.
I havn't given up yet, and hope a brief visit is still possible.
Construction phase is scheduled to finish Jan 2011.
Other ideas are afoot.

aint there a paper road at the back of the farm some where that hooks up with vandy rd, could be an escape route
tri boy
26th October 2010, 18:14
Well, at least until about March anyhow.
After emails, ph calls etc the final answer is no site tour due to OSH/induction requirements.
There is a few arears to view snippets of it, and the ride will still be going past the entrance point, but those access tracks that I have been oggling all spring are off limits.
On a brighter note. Me n Kanny went for a wee pootle on labour day, and she is giving me the "yay, or nay" on some of the roads, so it should shape up as a very friendly newby ride. (kanny's fault if it's not):innocent:
Hope this weather sticks around.:sunny:

Hi Mat,
No actual costs cept accom cost, (which I'll finalise in the next week or so) if accom is needed.
Food/beverages etc after/before the rides are peoples own costs.
I will put up a more detailed route soon, now that I know the wind farm is off limits, and after me n kanny, (the novice quinea pig) sort it a bit more.

Went past the wind farm today on my way back from Kawhia and headed to the locked gate at the end of Plateau Road and watched the trucks cart a wind mill stem up the hill. They have pilot vehicle first then a water truck to dampen down the dust. Next is the truck (trucks actually as the 2 trucks are linked and together they tug the payload up the hill) and trailer unit with the windmill section. followed by another pilot vehicle. All travelling rather slowly. Tried to video it but the battery was flat :(

Three weekends to go, so I thought I better kick this thread along a bit.
Me n Kanny have been doing a bit of route riding and discussing alternatives, and things are falling into place.
This Saturday, I plan on doing a slow timed ride, maybe with another BRP rider:innocent:
Those who havn't secured a bed for either the fri, sat nights, please post so, so that required beds are known. (looks like we should have enough).
The Saturday ride will probably head nth taking in Nikau Caves cafe as a refresher, and continue nth further.
Pt Waikato might or might not be doable for a round trip, most important is the slower/less agressive riders enjoy their Saturday.
No good freaking people out with large miles, and few stops.
Sunday will be more around the Raglan area, allowing for a cruisy start to the day, and exit stratergies kept simple.
So thats about it for now.
Those who can't make the ride, please remove your name from the calendar, and or PM me.
Will somebody in the Naki make sure Colin is fit and well, and has heavy duty trainer wheels fitted to the Bimmer:scooter:

Each cabin sleeps four people, and linen is available at a small surcharge if hauling a sleeping bag is a hassle.
Per person, it equates to $30/per night.
Not including linen, (probably an extre fiver.
So far, beds in my cabins are reserved for:
Kanny
Nic

That leaves 5 beds available.
Has anybody not secured a bed? Please post/PM me if so.
If there are no further takers for one, I'll let the camp know that the other cabin will not be needed. I'll do this on Fri morning 19th Nov. (this week).
There will be fannies chance of securing any bed in Raglan very soon, as the place is ballistic in Dec.

Dino and myself are pretty certain we have the main Saturday ride sorted.
It is north of Raglan, and will have an optional extented section for those that have a more "urgent" riding style.
A fuel range on the relaxed ride will need to be about 200km, (but there will be enough big tanks to syphon out of if need be, but if your on a DR/KLr etc you'll be fine).
The extended ride will have to fuel up in Two-a-cow or some such area.
Who is riding what section will be thrashed out on Fri night, and totally rearranged over morning coffee on Satmorn.
Sunday is pretty much sorted also.
By the way, the new Te Uku wind turbines are frecking huge.:gob:
That will be some site visit in the new year.
Oh, and for the Naki boys, Nikau Cafe has Mike's Brewery Beer on tap!
(well, keg tap at least), goes well with the Kahawhai fish cakes and garden fresh salad:yes: (still my favourite Waikato Cafe)

Hi Ian:wavey:
Hope the knee is feeling better.
Sat morning will be about 9ish as we want the ride to be a relaxed pootle with stops as required.
Are you thinking of coming down 22?
Would be good if you can make it, as the ride home for you is exactly the way we are heading. (Baker Rd meets up with Waimarama that will head you nth etc.
I think SH22 is sealed isn't it? You been riding that Daytona too much.
Knee? still works as a hinge but doesn't like too much exercise, gets a bit swollen & sore. Usually improves after alcohol conmsumption for some reason.
I'll use the gravel on saturday, probably Wairamarama and down the middle as that's fastest :scooter: and aim for arriving at 8.30 for breakfast. Looking forward to a day pootling around & taking photos, have you organised the weather yet?

Since it's on this weekend, best I drag this thread up near the top again.
If this weather holds, then some essentials will be :
Sunblock,
Water, water, water.
Sunnies,
Breathable clothing under the jacket etc.
Expect dust aplenty on the gravel. (bad if your too close to another rider, but good to identify oncoming vechiles).
Keep hydrated, and some clear eyes/optrex in the bag is handy to bathe the eyes if the dust becomes a nusance.

Gutted I have relatives due to arrive this Friday night, so I'm definitely a non-camper but would love to make some of Saturday.
If I do manage to sneak away on Saturday morning but don't manage to make Raglan from Akl by 9am, would there be a suitable intercept point before too long e.g. maybe first fuel stop?
Cheers - Chasio

Nikau cafe would be a good rendevous point.
The faster guys might be going through there earlier, (say 11ish on Sat, the relaxed group should be there around noon).
Two access points. Hwy 22, then turn down Waikaretu Rd, or gravel access up Te Akau coast rd, and turn onto the bottom of Waikaretu.

Wicked:woohoo:
If your roading it down 22, watch out for road slump about 10km from the Raglan end.
It's posted as 30kmh, and the slumps could catch a rider out if hit at the wrong angle.
See you there.

Hi Phil,

Taking some weetbix/coffee etc for brekky, and will be going cheap on evening meals also. (need to save money, as that robber Santa is closing in fast).
No flash luxury pub meals for us, plus, the pub will be that busy, I think you'll be waiting an hour for the food to arrive.

Well... the plan WAS to borrow my mate's Africa, as the woman was going to come along, and 2-up on the KLR isn't the most fun thing in the world. However I've now been sucked into a family gathering tonight to discuss items of importance, and that's likely to spill over to Saturday too. Grrrr. Looks like I'm not to hit the gravel this weekend.

Did you think the 690 suspension was not long travel enough? I was a little worried about that, but after riding found no issue with it. Looks way more stumpy that it feels to me.
Instead of watching the bikes get-it-on, maybe you should be working on your RR? :innocent:

I'm puzzled and I may be out of line, but we just don't have accidents on adventure rides and here I am, reading about 2 potentially serious incidents on what was supposed to be a laid back, newby friendly run.
Now obviously, I have almost no information on this and so I avoid jumping to conclusions.
So tell me, what happened?
Or is there some embarrassment involved and I should just mind my own business?

6th December 2010, 08:08
Hi Bass
There was just one 'incident' on this ride. As I understand it there was a similar departure from the road on a previous ride through the same area (the common factor being both riders hail from Taranaki)

Was a very friendly cruisy ride Bass it was just that someone got carried away looking at scenery and went to wide on a bend hit the loose stuff. And was the only one of a serious nature.

They took the stuff off me at Townsville horsepiddle, cause I drained a bottle in two nights.

So how'd ya do that then ?
Must be the season for it, Elaine (Kelvin & Elaine have been on some of our Naki rides) is in hospital with a broken leg. Caught her leg while hopping off the bike and fell against a fence and the bike fell on her leg.:eek5:

How long you off for Dino? :corn:
My shoulder is still a bit tender, good range of movement but it lets me know when its tired :violin:
Thought I had my baby all set to go until I noticed Hugger was fouling muffler  I managed to break the pannier lower mount during the adjustment process
Elaine has had surgery and is looking as happy as someone with a broken leg can look . Kelvin is looking a bit sheepish  Just one of those silly dismount accidents

I'm ok, sort of, got the cast off last week and went to a pretty dark place for a couple of days as the elbow was deformed to buggery and wouldn't move:shit:
The arm is sort of moving now and is permanently bent in a KTM riding position so not sure how I'm gunna ride the Beema.Bike is just about back together, its amazing how you can use your toes, teeth, head etc in place of your right arm, cant wait to wipe my arse with my right hand tho:yes:

23 years of riding and well over 100,000ks that is the first and hopefully the last injury I receive . As soon as the Doc say's your good to go I'm on the bike and gone, there is well over 600hrs of annual leave now and the bosses at Fonterra are pissed to say the least:facepalm:

Ok I will start with the confessions  I fell off because I was riding dumb  And that in a nutshell is it
I could waffle about target fixation and all the things I did wrong once I was in trouble :innocent: but truth is if I had been thinking instead of just doing I wouldn't have put myself in the position of needing better reactions than what I have
As I approached the bridge I should have listened to the voice that said "Col you cant see the road on the other side of the bridge, if it goes round a corner you could be in trouble mate".
Instead I listened to the voice that said "shit its fun to go fast and make lots of dust for Dino to ride through" :woohoo:

Thats a bummer Dino.
Don't overload any tendons that are trying to reknit themselves to bone etc, otherwise you will have to get sliced/diced/sacrificed.
Note. Mick Doohan had his NSR adapted with a rearbrake lever on the left side of the handlebars due to his mangled foot. Didn't slow him down much:innocent:
Dibs on being the surgeon. I got a couple of pocketknives, and tie wire in the garage:devil2:

Awwh mate I'm in the same boat, go back to specialist on the 11th, if not all good he's gunna cut me. Arm is bent in a permanent holding handlebar position so that is good in some respects.
Seeing all the photos of everyone having fun is great:facepalm:

Went to Te Kuiti and back on the Scooter Wednesday, all tarseal but good to be on two wheels again :scooter:
Put a brand spanking new Hiedenau K76 on the rear and a half worn Pirrelli MT90 on the front yesterday. I am hoping they run well together, time will tell I guess. I figure I wont be going near anything knarly for a while yet (as the shoulder is still a bit tender). So may as well run road bias tyres as opposed to knobs
Hope you other two buggers get well soon, must admit to looking at beach race reports etc with some envy :crybaby:

Two women were playing golf. One teed off and watched in
horror as her ball headed directly toward a foursome of men
playing the next hole.
The ball hit one of the men.
He immediately clasped his hands together at his groin,
fell to the ground and proceeded to roll around in
agony.
The woman rushed down to the man, and immediately
began to apologize. 'Please allow me to help. I'm a
Physical Therapist and I know I could relieve your pain if you'd
allow me, she told him.
'Oh, no, I'll be all right. I'll be fine in a few minutes,' the
man replied. He was in obvious agony, lying in the fetal position,
still clasping his hands there at his groin.
At her persistence, however, he finally allowed her to help.
She gently took his hands away and laid them to the side,
loosened his pants and put her hands inside.
She administered tender and artful massage for several
long moments and asked, 'How does that feel'?
He replied: It feels great, but I still think my thumb's broken!
