Well as I figured, the bearings killed themselves today - feels like your wheel is flat or constantly spinning, I like it

But the question is, I just managed to pay the last of the 3k of the repairs of the bike, and need a rough estimate for the time it would take / parts price, my mechanic charges 60ph - and they are replacing the bearings and spacers.

Can anyone give me any ideas how much this will hurt me, I have to go get an extended overdraft and don’t want to make it to small or to big, cheers.

can't be too hard.. can't you buy the bearings and fit them yourself? Don't think there's any special tools needed, and hand tools should just about do the lot..

Thanks kiwi.

Bug - yea I'd love to do it myself - unfortunatly I cant on account of my tools all rusting due to a myserious liquid the cat put all over it..... and I have nothing to leverage the bike on *doh!* - thanks.

Ok I got told for my bike that the job would take about 1.5 hrs to 2 hours to do at a bike shop. I can't remember how much I was told that I would be paying but I think it was gonna be around $180 to $200. But not past $250.

I had two different quotes from 2 shops with the same amount of time quoted.

Oh, so you’re riding with shot bearings? Or are you still recovering?

I can tell you now that Its freaken scary as shit on my bike, to make it worse I had to take 20kg on the pack rack! *doh* it wouldn’t turn into any corner I had to slow down to like 30kmph to get around a 50kmph corner (fully banked over!) To make it worse I got a bit agitated behind a vehicle travelling very slow today along with the fellow in front of me, he overtook on the inside and just missed a parked car by about 10cm O_O So I following suit (the driver in front was like an old lady on P, all over the road braking everywhere) I chopped (doh no clutch!) down a gear with a full twist - and the front came up as I went passed them, was funny and scary the rear wheel was sending me in like a wiggle pattern, I put the front down again and at the lights I noticed something that I wish want there, yes undercover cops was behind me the entire time, but low behold they just pointed and drove off so that’s my little story for the day.

I've never heard of swingarm bearings ''collapsing'' - surely there was some warning before it got this bad? I've ridden for years with worn swingarm bushes, you get a wobble for sure, but never to the danger level.

Yea it was since my incident when it got real bad, I am thinking when the swingarm took a massive wack (dented it) it probably wrecked the consistency of the bearing, I never thought of checking it, and damn if you ride bikes (on road) with swingarms bearings as bad as mine is atm, then I salute you sir!

well, swingarm bearings are usualy bushings, they wear at a steady rate, depending on frequency of lubrication - so you get more and more play over the years and acustom yourself to it.Maybe you damaged the bushes and they cracked,or if a fancy bike has some sort of real bearing maybe it really cracked. Some swingarms had a rubber bush like car suspension bushes, going soft is about all they did.

Ah, I see your point, I might actually try take it apart and see what condition the connecting assembly is in out of interest.
But age could be a contributing factor I supose the bike isnt as young as it once was, and has suffered some abuse I must say.
Do you have problems at a normal age / distance, or is it just how you ride (predominatly offroad?)

Maybe the swing arm is twisted . That could munt the bushing

Totally irrelevant but shaft drive GS Suzukis have tapered roller swingarm bushes.

Don't the bearings have to be line reamed after they are pressed in? (Mind you, I may be thirty years out of date here )
