View Full Version : Hitcher's Grand Challenge Misadventure

James Deuce
17th October 2010, 16:36
Hitcher is in ICU at Palmerston North Hospital after being found unconscious and trapped under his bike on the Pongaroa to Waipukurau leg of this year's Grand Challenge. First on scene was a GP participating in the GC and he quickly re-established an airway and organised the ambulance.

Hitcher remained unconscious and unresponsive and has been kept that way until recently. Mrs Hitcher has just informed me that he is off the ventilator, breathing on his own and responding to his parents and Mrs Hitcher appropriately but not with his normal force of personality as yet.

At this stage it appears that Hitcher may have suffered a gentle subdural bleed and may have realised something was up as it appears he toppled from his bike at very low speed and suffered only minor grazing on knuckles and one heel as a result.

Mrs Hitcher has asked me to post this update and to communicate any further updates. She is rather busy, as you can imagine so please remember that the outcome is not clear at this stage and Mrs Hitcher and Hitcher's other family members will need a bit of time and space to understand the implications of this event. I will be happy to pass on anything anyone posts in this thread.

I don't want to go into it too much here but myself and another rider were first on the scene and it was certainly not a nice thing to come across. For a while there things were very tense and it was a relief when the Beemer riding doctor arrived and took charge. We were in a very isolated spot and it was around 45mins before the first emergency vehicles arrived but they were obviously very efficient and we soon had him in the ambulance for a short ride to the chopper.

I am very relieved to hear that Brett's condition has improved since I last saw him and wish him all the best for a speedy recovery.

Good work chap. He wasn't helicoptered after all and took approx 3.5 hours to get to hospital with a few stops to stabilise Brett's condition on the way.

SCU aren't investigating so there will be no charges laid as a result. The SCU cop was very good value (motorcyclist himself) and went and picked up Brett's gear from the Pahiatua Police station and brought it back to Palmerston North.

I'll be going back up tonight or tomorrow morning so I'll print the thread off and take it with me.

He may be discharged today but that isn't certain yet.

Short term memory loss is quite pronounced but as he isn't panicky by nature and he's clever enough to bluff his way through most things staff are being very thorough with neuro-obs.

Mr Hitcher. As has been said already by so many, I wish you a full & speedy recovery. Perhaps the force generated by that melon of yours hitting solid ground was responsible for the recent after-shock?.

The central nervous system has three membranes; The dura mater, the arachnoid mater, and the pia mater.
http://www.ohiohealth.com/mayo/images/image_popup/r7_meningitis.jpg

You don't need a bang on the head to suffer a bleed in these areas and a spontaneous subdural bleed usually happens over a week and a half or so before it culminates in an acute phase.

That is indeed the type of bleed that Aaron Slight suffered however Hitcher has had a subarachnoid hemorrhage and this is a much more serious proposition which comes on suddenly and usually only 10% of people survive a bleed like that and only a very small percentage emerge from the subsequent coma without serious deficit.

It appears at this stage that Hitcher has surpassed even the best hopes of medical science. My hope is that medical science can return the favour and fix whatever structural defect caused the bleed.

Not many of us on here work in the health sector (I do), so could easily misunderstand how serious this has been for Mr & Mrs H. Glad to here he is progressing beyond the hopes of the Med Staff. He has bleeding spiders in his head? :gob:

Seriously, he is truly one of the lucky ones. As was our daughter 2 years ago. Neurological surgeon was able to repair the problem bleed, and found/fixed another weak spot before it let go.
I understood that half make it to hospital for treatment, and half of them live - making a 25% survival rate. 10%/25% - still not good odds. It is usually what has happened when you read 'he suddenly collapsed on the sports field'...

Good piece in the latest Rusty Nuts' "Rusty Trumpet": (http://www.rustynuts.co.nz/default.aspx?PageID=4)
2 riders pulled out after attending a crash scene for some time and they didn’t want to continue, it sort of spoilt the enjoyment, but their willingness to assist was critical to the rider who was down and it is no exaggeration to say they were responsible to saving the Bretts life, as it was they who pulled the bike off of the top of him and ascertained that he was turning turn due to his helmet constricting his airway. Brett had the perfect people behind him when he got into trouble. He was being followed by a fireman, a GP , and on off duty policeman, but others as well. Well done guys and to all those who stopped to assist.
Brett is now doing very well in Wellington Hospital, Ward 7 South Room 11, ring hospital to check visiting hours etc. or send a card. He is trying to run the hospital apparently, his short term memory is still kaput but everything else is working well. His crash was apparently due to a small aneurism in the brain, so that caused the crash, not the crash causing the injury. There is a constantly updating thread on Kiwibiker Site. Search for Hitcher.
He has many friends and well wishers posting there.
That he does. Heal well Brett

Thanks for the good wishes everybody. I'm home again and sort of online.

The head thing seems to be working itself out OK with a physio doing regular pliage to a left knee -- mine, not his. Left thumb is a bit bent and bruised too, which impedes some ukelele chords unfortunately.

Typing is rougher than guts.

Helmet is munted, as are various garments that were removed from me. Spectacles too fall loosely into the unwearable category. New ones are ordered.

I've had a quick squiz at the Shiver. Given what I've been through, it is in surprisingly good shape. Next thing on the to do list is to get a repair claim underway.

No rush on this. I've "voluntarily" surrendered my license, so no doubt the wheels of bureaucracy will take some time to move on that.

Mrs H has been fantastic. As too have been others.

I've got no memory of what happened. Nothing. I can vaguely remember the Rusty's pre-ride briefing and bugger all else from the Saturday in question. Mrs H got a couple of texts from me that I can't remember sending. "Normal reception" started resuming from the following Wednesday in Palmerston North ICU. A transfer to Wellington Level 7 South subsequently resulted and I was discharged from there at the end of last week.

I'll need to sort through my various stuff and decide what's OK, what's repairable and what needs replacing.

A phased return to work is another thing that's on my To Do list for this week.

I'd love to know what happened and why but I suspect that recall is not going to happen.

GPS coordinates would be welcomed. My trip meter says 47.1km which I presume is from my last fuel stop at Woodville.

I've got some images of a munted HJC and of the glasses I was wearing at the time. I'll post these presently. Gahh!

Will go through the process of getting my license reinstated in a couple of weeks' time. It was suggested by LTNZ that I may like to do this voluntarily. Something to do with a brain aneurism, which they apparently take a dim view of. So I have.

Then there's the insurance claim. I am developing a view that a much loved Shiver may go onto the market following its comprehensive and exacting repair.

On a related note, I was hoping my divorce would have a similar side effect (memory loss). Unfortunately my ex is all too real!

Until he saw the price...

On another thread, the new GSX1250FA looks interesting. Of course it would need a few thou thrown at it for mandatory suspension and brake upgrades as well as for a "safer" exhaust, but otherwise it looks an interesting package.

If I thought I could keep my licence on one... I loved the electric motor smoothness and the incredible torque. The ride position and the brakes and handling were fine for me. The stock suspension settings were a bit hard for me on the one I rode, but overall I loved the bike and definitely recommend them!

Thanks to all involved on the fateful day in question. The Rusty Nuts Motorcycle Club always runs well organised and highly considered events. That organisation contributed much to my after-accident recovery. So too did the calibre of riders participating and the local emergency services. Event riders who arrived on the scene soon after included a GP, a fireman, policeman and other caring, non-flappable types. Given that I wasn't breathing by myself for quite a while, I owe all of these people more than a little.

The local Pahiatua Policewoman Donna Oliver is a star. So too is Les of the crash investigation unit who delivered my gear from the accident location.

Thanks are also due to a whole bunch of friends and family members who have been just wonderful. Jane (Mrs H) has just been amazing.

Hey Mr H - great to see you back in here and posting with some semblance of clarity. Look forward to seeing you and Jane on the road sometime soon, or in Martinborough which seems to be where all good bikers meet.

All that's needed to complete that opportunity is a valid motorcycle license and a working motorcycle. Goodness knows how long all of that may take.

I've been away (again!) for over a week, so it was nice to return and see this thread had metamorphosed into a good news one. Best wishes for your continued recovery, Brett.

Kind regards,
