I've been living in a house for the last few years with plenty of space for my bike and car. Now I'm looking at moving to an apartment and really don't want to give up my bike. I've found a place that has a carpark which seems side enough to squeeze the bike in beside it, but I wondered if anyone else has had a similar situation and has any better ideas?

Try to find a hidden corner where no one can see it from the street, and get yourself a good disc lock. Don't forget to get one of those little bungy cord thingies to attach aound the handle bars to the disc lock. Without it you could try to ride off with the lock still attached like I did one day.

Park it at a mates place you trust.
Ride it up the stairs.
Join a club that has a clubhouse where bikes are.
Get an apartment at bottom floor and take it inside.

+1 on the first idea. the second option MIGHT work, but it wouldn't be as fun

I rent a shed. $25.00 a month and I get my own key for 24 hour access. I keep the bike trailer, bike and all the associated gear for racing/track days there.

I used to keep my bike chain to a very thick metal post downstairs. However, some fuckwits stole it one night when I hadn't chained it up.

Too many people see you coming and going with an apartment and a bike draws too much of the wrong attention. I highly recommend doing the same as I do if you live in an apartment.

I park the bike sideways either in front or behind the car. Only downside is I have to get the owner of the car (Other flatmate) to move it if I park in front.

Other cars either side were informed and have no problem.

It is not a Holden or ford though so it depends on the car?

Buy a "stand & deliver"Transit van keep thet in your allocated parking space & keep the bike in the van. You'll get ir sussed for quick load & unload procedure in no time at all.You could always get a ground floor apartment if you're lucky.

Fuck, that sounds awesome. Do you know if they have a setup in Christchurch?

All the spare sheds in Chch are currently being used as temporary housing.

Just do what the missus used to do - keep it in the lounge.......just make sure the landlord doesn't find out..........

Is bike thievery from apartment car-parks really that bad? Are a lot of cars stolen too?

It's private. The house owner only has 1 house and it's not in Christchurch.

Parking is extremely public. If you don't have a car alarm you're fucked. Even if you do it's best to park in the field of vision of security cameras.

Nah. See, you get a crappy old van that does not run.

Do whatever you can to avoid moving into an apartment; they destroy your will to live.

Man was not meant to live in 30m^2 of floor space. Having no yard to piss in and being surrounded by people in a human zoo will depress the shit out of you.

Typed with toungue firmly in cheek I hope:gob:
But seriously there are NIGHTDORKS out there hence the need for this thread I certainly wouldn't leave a bike vulnerable outside an apartment block, unless I wanted to catch a turkey :innocent:
In this day & age there's more than enough options for some hi-tech security to prevent theft & failing that to track it down.
I spent my first 3 months in Perth in an apartment block there was an attempted car theft on our first night there so we threw the only 2 empty beer bottles we had at them & proceeded to empty as many as we could with only 4 glasses & 2 mouths. w e stil managed to let a couple more go but buggered if we were going to throw a full bottle down, any they got the message & fucked off. All the glass was cleaned up by the time we surface the next day...
