View Full Version : Honda GB400 restoration project?

So i recently spotted this rustbucket on trademe.

Was thinking about getting it as long term project bike/toy that ill keep. But i am wondering if it will be worth it, even if i negotiated for a way lower price.

That huge dent in the tank next to the seat.. can it come out? was thinking pulling it out usuing hotglue and a stick then filling it in or sth..

Theres also the engine and the engine fins, seems to be some sort of leak? If new gaskets are needed, where would i find that? THers also corosion on the chrome forks next to the headlights that needs to be looked at too..

Then theres the prob with the idling after highway...


argg.. i think i just talked myself out of it.

The whole idea of "project" bikes ... is to fix problems, and restore/rebuild to the condition you can live with ...

A workshop manual will tell you how to fix most problems. With pictures even ...

The simplicity of the GB400 will make it an easier project bike. Bits for them are still easy to come by. OR ... stick a bigger donk in it.

haha yea, but i tried googling for basic spare parts like gaskets, came up with nothing. I think if anyting thts my main concern. Otherwise im keeeeen as beans.

EDIT: DO'H! just found a site with such parts.. silly me.

Try Googling "local Honda shop" :innocent: .... much easier ... :yes:

Econohonda is probably your best bet for shite old honda parts.

Ohk thanks for that!

Will have a chat with them and the local honda dealers. If all good then i think ill try negotiate a price with the owner..

Hi guys.I have just got a GB500 with one dead engine.Valve head through piston,smashed in head,all munted.I am trying to find out if a gb400 head will fit?Any Ideas?geo

I used to own a 500. The thing to do was to put an XR600 top on it. They were said to fit straight on. I had a 400 years later but found it only ok under 80km/h.

Eco honda have very little in the way of parts listed for the GB. But a number of parts are found on other Honda models. You just need to know which. I have just sourced parts, including a GB500 alternator cover gasket, arrived today from Australia. $20.50aus. An alternative is to buy gasket paper and cut your own.

You will find that a lot of the electrical components on the GB's are also found on Hondas ATV bikes. The 500 motor was based on the XR600, sleeved down. Not sure if the 400 would be the same. The motors look identical on the outside but would they have sleeved a motor down 200cc?

The local Honda dealer had no interest in trying to find parts. They said the gaskets were unavalible anywhere.
When I had to replace the rear sprocket on my 2008 NZnew Honda 250, I was quoted $180 ex Japan and 3 weeks wait. Had one from Sidney in 4 days, NZ$90.38. landed at my back door.

I like the Honda bikes but Blue wings attitude towards supporting after sales service stinks.
