View Full Version : Good attitude, good excuse & good luck - what do you think?

I received the following email from a friend following a labour weekend ride to the Greymouth races. I'm trying to decide if he's an idiot, a lucky b*astard or some mixture of both. I'd be interested to know the general consensus of opinion...

On the way back Mark suggested we swap bikes. He would take the Hornet & I the Hayabusa. After my obligatory pretense at reticence, I took off on the big Suzy.

There is only one expletive and one word to describe the experience, “F**king Awesome”. The thing is rock solid, has loads of bottom end, oodles of power and the aftermarket Yoshimura cans make the whole machine purr like a big cat. The trouble is that it is just way too easy to go much too fast. Although Mark had explained that the speedo was in miles per hour, I was soon doing a hundred of those with the engine revs seemingly no more than a fast idle. I was having a wonderful time passing traffic like it was going backwards when a brief wave of responsibility came over me and I slowed down to 80 mph. Still enjoying being king of the highway, I failed to notice a plain coloured commodore parked up a few hundred meters down the road. I also did not notice opposing traffic apparently flashing headlights to warn me – don’t know how or why I could miss that.

The first I knew what was happening was when I picked up the flashing red and blue lights in the Busa mirrors – F**k. The cop had clocked me at between 118 and 121 kph. I fessed up and said I had no excuse except that it was not my bike and I could not focus on the smaller kilometer digits on the inner track of the speedo dial without my glasses. Things did not look good, especially as the cop reminded me that they were having a low tolerance long weekend and were duty bound to book anyone going 4 kph or more over the limit. I was steering down the barrel of a $300 fine plus demerit points. The cop checked my license to see if I was supposed to be wearing glasses and compared the kilometer digits on the busa and the hornet. To my relief he agreed and let me off. I am not religious but thank god for making Hayabusas, Hornets and at least one decent NZ cop...

Not an idiot but bloody lucky. 100mph on a Busa is idling. That's only 160kmh which most modern bikes will sit at easily all day long without any issues. ( if it were legal)

The problem is speeding on Labour Weekend, where there are likely to be cops and not having a good radar detector :)

sounds like he got lucky and that cop must have been a biker. Big ups to mr police man for letting a biker off without a ticket. best to slow down over the long weekends though.

4km/h over?
They may as well fucking electronically govern our bikes now instead of 4 years from now.
What a fucking joke.

one lucky bastard, cop must have fulfilled his quota for the day.

i assume that your mate treated the cop with some respect, that goes a long way these days with the cops as they get so much shit.

Are you serious? I've been nothing but pleasant every time ive been stopped (cos I thought the same thing). And the fuckers gave me tickets each time. I won't be bothering to even bother speaking next time, they're gonna give me the ticket anyway

I have not been pulled over by the cops yet (touch wood) so I do not know from personal experience. Outside the traffic side of the law, most cops have treated me with little respect and are very accusing and presumptuous.

But if (more like when) I get pulled over for traffic related things, I will try to be respectful. If that fails, then next time will be like your next plan of attack.

Sounds like your mate Mark must be a nice bloke letting you loose on his pride and joy, The Hayabusa ? they are as fast as fuck omfg and only in my dreams ....sounds like a nice cop too ..... well done mate. :innocent:

Yeah - he reckons he was. There is no guarantee that being civil and level headed when dealing with cops is going to get anyone off. However, I've never heard of anyone getting off by being a smartarse or uncooperative so probably not a good tactic.

I have had a couple of positive experiences with Police-both times I deserved a ticket, no defence. I was polite [even reaching into the leathers to hand over my licence, which I thought would be gone!] Both times, I got off, with an appropriate lecture, of which I did take notice. Certainly enough for me to continue to be polite next time I am stopped.

Apparently all vehicle speedos are 100% accurate. That's why the tolerance may be getting dropped :killingme

Yeah, my mate reckons he's a top bloke. Probably irrelevant but on the day in question he (Mark) had been a bit surprised that he was not able to shake off the Hornet and it may have been that he was trying to suss out why - was it nitro'd or did it have the turbo... :gob:

So he's meant to wear glasses. Is riding a bike which he isn't familiar with at over the speed limit and the only excuse is he finds it hard to "focus" on the smaller speedometer numbers in the busa.

Haha and the cop never thought well maybe that's 'cos you're riding a little too fast...

I wish that happens to me every time I get pulled over.

My thoughts exactly, and then when you tie it in with the cars going the other way flashing their headlights because they want an idiot on a bike to slow down from his supersonic speed while they are out enjoying the public holiday with there families and this guy on the bike is putting them at risk....

That'll work for ya. NOT.

Perhaps your attitude isn't as pleasant as you think it is...?

Nup, I'd pretty much garauntee it was impeccable... My theory/observation though(after my last few stops) is that there was never any real possibility they were going to wave the penalty though and that they simply appreciated someone being pleasant and courteous while they simply went about their Job.

How dare they huh ?

Therein lies the problem. YOU think it was impeccable....

Conversation overhead in court - "I was behaving myself, your honour. I only spat at him and called him a cunt 16 times..."

What problem ? I get your point that people have different perspectives on things but... Were you there ? You seem intent on suggesting that I wasnt well behaved and I therefore didnt have a chance of getting off but I cant figure out your motivation for it.

Im just a little puzzled as I dont have a problem with any of the tickets I received as they were all valid (IE I did what they said I did). All Im suggesting is that from now on (And my OP may have been badly worded and given a slightly different impression than I intended) I will keep conversation to the minimum, answer when questioned and generally be polite, but will no longer smile, laugh and pretend to be generally happy about getting ticketed.

Hell, I dont ring up the IRD and thenk em for taxing me either, Some jobs are just thankless I Guess.

Could be where you live, down this way and further down the people are friendly and more relaxed.

sorry you've been pinged so much.

Perhaps poorly worded in my post - funny how things get lost in the interpretation when done on the keyboard..... I wasn't suggesting you were anything. My suggestion was, as you correctly spotted, people have different perspectives.... Nothing more, nothing less, nothing personal....

Most folk end up saying "Thank you..." or, "I would say thanks, but... you know what I mean...." when given a ticket for whatever... A funny world we live in....

I have been let of a big fine before (speeding) in the car on the way home from work late in the rain. Couldn't believe my luck because I really would of struggled to pay it at the time, and pulled my head in afterwards as a result.

Before that also got let off parts off a fine (cop waived the not carrying license fee).

Both times I wasn't an ass with ridiculous excuses but didn't treat the copper like a hero or anything either.

Taken together, both of your posts suggest the following:
1) You are a cop AND/OR
2) You want KBers to think you are a cop AND/OR
3) You are a practitioner of fellatio

In the later case, its not surprising you were thanked and had your hand shook when you had finished. :motu:

Not wishing to indulge people who seem to think they are entitled to the last word (COPS), I should perhaps start a poll to ascertain how many KBers can put their hand on their heart and swear categorically that they regularly keep within the legal limit as a matter of conscience. Sure everyone creeps over it on occasion but what I want to know is the proportion of riders who do not feel particularly guilty whenever their speedo goes over 100 kph on the open road....

Patrick

Is COPS the last word?

I think there were more words after that one....

Or is the last word "one..."
