I have rescued a little dj1 - abandoned (or dumped) by previous owner (or offender). Will assume the later as there are no ignition barrel. Anyhoo ...

He's missing a few other bits - cosmetic only - but I'm confident he can once again tottle around the streets.

A bit of looking on the net would seem the DJ1 is closely related to a Honda Dio. Further investigation (under the seat) has the model code SE50M. Unsure of engine type yet. AFxx ???

Most 'later' model Dios on trademe seem to have fuel caps at the base of the seat and foot pan, this DJ's is under the seat with the oil.
He also has Japanese characters on the handle bars for lights (hi low beam) and what I assume to be the electric start on the RH side.

Can anyone shed any light on the DJ1, manual, year, or engine type??

Or even where to start in trying to turn the little fella over.

First plan is to test the battery and possibly install a switch instead of a new key barrel.

Any help much appreciated.

Stripped the body work off. Cunningly placed is a calendar stamp for the yrs the body would suit on the inside of the panels, so its either '85 or '86.

There's a Japanese sticker under the frame LH side says A-AF12
Tho there is also a stamp on engine case AF24E followed by Japanese VIN.

But from what I understand the SE50 (model) came with a AF05 engine.

The US model is the Elite S, which lead me to this website http://www.hondaspree.net/phpBB3/index.php and a service manual for an '87 which is almost identical.

A good enough place to start.

so turns out the starter motor is missing.

there is a random home-job bit of wiring as the previous 'owner' has used a normal electrical cable from the CDI to the alternator.

and there is a house fuse coming off the battery in place of the normal 10a inline fuse.

so i will go about connecting all the disconnected wire etc.

but I should be able to kick start without a start motor in place right??

Yeah kicking it should work, I kick over my scoot if its been sitting a little while.
Hard to push start though.:facepalm:

some pics of the stripped DJ and great wiring job someones done, and what the original looks like (in the same livery too!)

hopefully I'll get the lil'tike going soon and restored to somewhat nearer its former self of 50cc goodness.

he's alive!

finally got around to tidying up the wiring after endless rainy weekends. (curse the lack of a garage).

i tried to kick him into life, but only got the faintest purr for a sec or so from the engine. A promising begining. I was going to check the spark plug, and drain the old fuel, but then fiddled with the fuel tap. ..... Eventually with a couple dozen more kicks, the purr became a roar, and a lot of white smoke. But the little fella is going.

I think i'll spend a little $$ on it. And with a little bit of fine tuning the lil' DJ will be a champ.

Hey just curious to how you got on. I currently have a little DJ1 I use to get around town but the air box had a moment and is no longer. Was going to put a pod on it because it seems easier then sourcing a new box and filter but I'd have to toy with jetting. Has anyone had a play around with that?
