View Full Version : Do my feet reach the ground?

Curly question that us less than statuesque people have to consider when buying/riding a bike.
I am a certified short arse  and need a bike that fits. The lovely BB has been a wonderful bike until just recently, combine a newly reupholstered seat (very plush it is) and a set of new tryes and the seat height has risen to the point that I can barely touch the ground. Measured it at 780mm, the manual says 777mm, so that seat really has made the difference.
Anyway, talk has turned to changing her for something else and here is where I need help. I think I dont want to go any higher than 740mm seat height, though I will consider putting a secondary sole on my boots if I have to. I like an upright riding style, am not that keen on forward pegs, have never owned or ridden a cruiser, though I am not dismissing one. I dont want to go any less output than the Radian according to this site http://www.bikez.com/motorcycles/yamaha_yx_600_radian_1986.php
she delivers up a HUGE :blip: 52 HP, though they also say the top speed is 125kph. On a recent closed road test I can confirm that she is capable of at least 145kph, so that horsepower may also be a bit light.
Whatever, I dont want to ride a small bike that is gutless, and I dont want to ride a big bike that has massive HP. I want a girls bike  So I am on the hunt. I am partial to a triple, but fear the feet on ground thing sadly. I would love buell  but I would probably only fit a Jap import one. I saw one at WMCC a year or two ago, cherry red, transparent tank, and tiny  I wonder what the seat height on that was/is?
I have no money :killingme so the budget is not enormous. All this in mind, what do you guys think might fit the bill?
Thanks in advance, all stupid replies will be rewarded, provision of specs appreciated :D

I know that bikes can be lowered too, for example, how low a seat height can be achieved when you lower an SV650?

I hear the ER6-N has a very low and narrow seat. It's also considered good value for money, and there are a few fairly cheap ones on Trademe at the moment. I'm considering one for my first larger bike partially for those reasons. Seat height is around 755mm.
70 odd horsepower, parallel twin (so nice around town), top speed around 220 km/h (so nice on the motorway), and apparently handles pretty well and is good fun to ride. That said, they only came out in about 2007 so you won't find an old one dirt cheap, you'd be looking at around $7000...

Something you need to consider is the width of the seat as well. A higher, but narrower, seat may be no worse than what the Radian offers.
Did you ever sit on YT's EX500?

The GS 1200 (retro style...2000? model) has a low seat height! My knees are bent with my feet flat on the ground on those things, and they are GORGEOUS!
Ducati Monsta and Honda Bros are also low, as others have mentioned (actually I know of a Duc 900 for sale)
Just remember, my lovely, that good things come in small packages!

I can Vouch for both of these. Tink sat on each of them. At 5'2" she was able to reach the ground reasonably comfortably.
The Gladius, can be picked up for around $12,000ish brand new. Scott at Mr Motorcycles has on in white and blue, I am sure he would do a deal on.

Now that is a bloody good idea. Pity your bike is too big for me. Mind you, I quite liked the set of it.
How do you manage foot boards though? I am a balls on pegs rider (difficult for some blokes I agree) myself, I am not sure I could handle flat footing it.

I would say go for a Ducati Monster - I was keen on a 400cc - I have short stubby legs and I sat happily on a 400 with bent knees. They are nice and light too.
You are more than welcome to have a go on my cruiser - the foot controls are only a little bit forward and the seat is nice and low.

Yeah, but I find it perfect for me. The footboards are great, I prefer them as you can shift your feet around and vary your position which makes longer rides more enjoyable. The C50T is noted for its roominess, especially for taller riders, but it may be a bit big for you. Same with the heel/toe shifter, unless I'm pressing on in the twisties, I always use the heel for upchanges. Some don't like them but I do.
You'd be welcome to pop in anytime... :msn-wink:

I really dont want to go down in output for sure. The gearing on the Radian gives it a tiny little bit of stonk when you open the throttle, I would hate to lose that. Being able to open the throttle and overtake at highway speeds is important. I dont want to have to go back to building up speed before I can get past something for sure. Have to go look at the specs for the bigger cc Ducatis. They leak oil though dont they?

Knowing my skills I would get confused and down change with my toe and end up in all sorts of trouble  Mind you I would be able to put my feet on the ground. As you say, it is what fits you and what you get used to. A bit like a reverse race change pattern. Always good for a giggle when you get them wrong

My M750 only puts out about 70 hp but at under 180kg that is plenty enough to pass cars on the open road.I'm not the tallest tree in the forest but after riding my BMW K75 the duck feels like a minibike.

Yes, body weight is an issue - I had a RM125 that I couldn't even do tippytoes on but my husband who is only a tiny bit taller than me could reach the ground as the bike dropped more as he weighed more.

I just had a look at a comparison and it says the seat of the Suzuki is 795mm.
Interesting that the Suzuki is only 13KGs heavier than the Radian, and if you can get bigger foot print on the ground, that difference is nothing.
Would still be worth a look though, nice look bike for sure.

The width and shape of the seat is as important as the height when it comes to touching the ground. I have also tried out a Yamaha SZR660 which was not a particularly tall bike either (775mm seat height, but narrow as it is a single).

Trumpy has been dropped say 38-40mm from 815mm weight is a hefty 188kgs (shorter link, and dropping front forks)
I test rode the Monster 696+ a few months back, and would take that over the ER6n any day. Sexier for sure and just as easy if not easier to ride ...lighter of course too.

Are you looking at new? How much dosh do you want to put into it?
The other option is to lower the suspension at both ends to keep the same rake / trail. Front via raising the forks in the triples. Rear via longer linkage / shorter dog bones or shorter shock.
you of course may reduce the amount of front fork travel available (with normal forks), but it may be another way to reduce 10-20mm as well as a reshaped seat. That would open up a few more options.
I'll measure my SV650 tonight. I've put a GSXR1000 shock in the rear which has lowered it slightly.

My 640 (KTM) is not exactly low and I can only tip toe one foot on flat ground on that but I've ridden it all over the country and not noticed it being a particular problem. I know us off road types are well used to this sort of ground clearance issue but it doesn't take long to get used to planning your stops so you don't make a complete arse of yourself.
The reason I bring this up is that bike choice is a very individual one and is usually driven by more than the seat height so you shouldn't let that dictate your choice. Maybe you need to get over the fear of falling flat on your face whenever the bike stops and practice riding a taller bike (CB 1300 should do....) for a bit to prove you can do it.
Conquer the fear girl, free the mind!

I have tried this, but my feet swing in the breeze :pinch: I once sat on a Vrod, very nice, low seat height, piece of cake to touch the ground and stand up only problem...
My feet did not reach the pegs of the forward controls, missed by miles. I tried a GSX750, could get the feet down, but could not reach the handlebars
I used to ride the big ground clearance bikes off road, my fav was a DR400, but I needed a catcher  I am a bit long in the tooth to play feel the fear and do it anyway, much prefer the this looks like a great place to stop, pull over, put side stand doen and get off, come back to the bike stand it up, out up the side stand, select a gear and then take off, all with out facing the fear :killingme

Triumph Bonneville (http://www.triumph.co.uk/newzealand/2010_Bonneville_Specifications_2010Bonneville.aspx ), the version with the 17" mag wheels - 740mm seat height and 66hp. Very "short arse friendly"
Actually. Tink tried one of these too. Found it nice to sit on. But rather heavy. Although it was at AMPS, and not alot of room around the bike, She was being careful. Did not want the domino effect if it fell over!!..:crybaby::facepalm:

The Radian weighs nearly 200kgs, I dont mind the heaviness, so much as the height.

Hey Mom,
I have the same problem only 5"4, but have owned a zzr1100,currently have a buell xb12r, have had a few 900 monsters, they are good, low seat and 75hp. You could look at a buell xb9/12 s, you can get them with a lowered seat, as well. I've heard there is a guy in tauranga who lowers stock seats by up tp 30mm, so that takes the problem away for most bikes. Good luck.

I understand what you mean, I was merely raising the point that you don't want to let a skill issue (managing too much height) dictate your choice of bikes. I'm not suggesting you get a bike you are not comfortable with but that you don't let 20mm of seat height eliminate a bike you would really like.
You also shouldn't discard the entertainment value for your friends as they watch your dismounting attempts, my latest involved a toi toi bush and me inverted in it. :woohoo:

I have a 2008 mag that states the ER6n seat at 785mm
Good point, looks like it varies by year. First few models were 785mm, but the 2010 model has chopped that down by about 30mm

Poor baby, hope she is ok Cam, very scarey when your babies get sick.
Go get a room you too
Ed knows my dry humour.
Yes Sam is really unwell with that rotovirus. Unlikely to get out of hospital for a few days yet. I must say it brings rain to the old eyeballs every day I see her and just cuddle her close for a few hours and give Di a break.
Ed knows I am a good cuddler.....

I am 5'2 and a tiny bit...
I'm 5'2 and I manage my ER6n ok. Took a bit to get used to it, but it doesn't bother me now. I don't flat foot unless I have a pillion, or only on one side with the other foot on the peg. And its lovely to ride
