Team, I was planning to do a 1000km haul on the weekend 14/15Nov but haven't got the stamina at present and will likely be moving house too...:violin:

So,

Short notice, but I may be able to gain access to parts of the Waiouru training area for a small group of riders on Sat 6th Nov. This is subject to final confirmation of access as I am needing to de-conflict a bit with some training activities that are occuring. I have had prelim discussions with range control and it looks good to get access to the eastern boundary of the training area (by gravel road) and also 4WD tracks up the eastern side of SH1 to the incline, then across the road and into Zone 1 (the big sandpit under the mountain).

I will ride from Wellington on Saturday morning (early!) and will head north up the main drag to ~ Marton / Hunterville, where I intend to shoot up Turakina Valley Road to Waiouru, gas up and then get into it around 11am.

I will seek approval for up to 9 other riders from the Adv / DP forum, so PM me if you're keen. Natually I will make a biased selection for guys I ride with / have ridden with, so PM me if you're keen. Group size and control is very strict, so will be managed by myself.

It will likely be a good solid, long day in the saddle, with most of the ride being big-bike-able (hey - I'm on an AT...) with Zone 1 being challenging desert-style riding...but can be avoided if desired.

Don't dwell on it, if you've ever wanted to get in and see the vastness of the Army Training area, now's your chance, so commit!

OK, progress so far is that we have approval and zones are booked, but riders are required to recieve a 20 minute briefing on "blinds" (ammunition & explosives that have failed to function).

Hopefully we are able to recieve a briefing on the day from a local staff member...this is the critical bit that may unhinge the plan...

This link is the eastern most destination (http://maps.google.co.nz/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=waiouru&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Waiouru,+Manawatu-wanganui&ll=-39.351423,175.963125&spn=0.012295,0.019248&t=h&z=16)...25KM east (in a straightline) from Waiouru township.

The other main area for the day is either side of SH1 tp to the mountain and the sandy area you see on google maps under the eastern side of Ruapehu.

Hey Buggs, I'm dead keen. But a newby poster and ya have not ridden with me before so I may not be one of ya Chosen ones. BUT, if you open to it,consider me. Give me a bit of warning tho as I have to take the day off work.I shouldn't have much problem with the riding.I owned an XL600 for six years when I lived in Queenstown and got out and about a bit down there.

Someone will be coming in on saturday morning to brief the group. Now we just need to get Toni Marsh or Jim Hickey on side too...

Should be all go now boys! Anyone wanting to stay up there sat night? I could be keen if we can scab some cheap beds. It will be a long day and a late ride back down south otherwise, but doable...:violin:

We will be looking to meet at 10 or 11am (TBC) at Waiouru Caltex. We can't afford to f*ck around time wise - we need get in to camp, get briefed, then get out yonder, so chop the latte's and blow on the pies...

Toothbrush, oil for the chain, a couple of bucks for shouting me beers and that's it!
I mean to say......Should fit that all in the glove box of the 950! :)

yeah I'm tied to Wellington friday night so at best will get on the road around 7am from Trentham. Depending on progress I'll either belt up the main drag or divert up Turakina.

I'll find a place for us to drop gear for the day in camp, no worries there. Sat night...I've got no other plans so can do sunday also; so happy to stay overnight.

Lookin forward to it - been a few years since I've been out in the zones.

You see, Im carryn a 'disability' thats bin exacerbated by the last 30days x 8600km and to ride to Wia, around the scrub, then home again would not happen at the moment.
No, I can't stay over - busy on the farm now - if it wasn't Id still be over 'home' !:shit:

Lads, we have the numbers now. Sorry for those who are on reserve list or weren't able to commit in time.

Not an ego thing or me trying to be a prick - it's not an exclusive club or anything, it's just that I'm personally accountable for the group and individual actions on the day and as a rule of thumb groups sizes are normally limited to around 4 or personal recreation activities like this, and this is certainly not an organised "event" like Desert Storm where hundreds of bikes cut sick across the tussock.

Will add timings and other details early in the week.

Who's riding up from Wellington (with me or otherwise) on Sat morning and who's staying overnight?

I have just this moment got them back on the bike and she is looking Sweet.......I even gave her a clean.....:)

40km or so gravel / rock road.
The tracks beside SH1 are generally loamy dirt / clay and are a mixed bag in the wet. Rule of thumb, slippery if wet.
Under the mountain will be mixture of sand, CNUT style rocks, pea metal sort of stuff. Will be a bit of a challenge I'd say, We won't know till we's stuck in the middle of it, ha.

To play it safe, go with knobs. You'll manage with crappy offroad tires, you'll just need to be selective with what you commit to. You will have a bit of self-choice on the day I think and seriously, most of it will be tame. I'm probably going to have a gay front tyre but I've just chucked a 606 on the rear for the bit under the hill...had a wicked fun time with it this arvo on a bit of gravel... hehe.

I have a 11000K rear Michelin T63 I'm planning to replace and I can give you ... the knobs are still noticeable, also have a 16000K front Michelin T63 that replaced last night ... which is not in very good shape

:gob: Your X Challenge must float on air to get the tyres that distance. It took just 3.5K to wear a T63 rear down to 4mm on the 250.

Yeah Its bizarre, however I get little out of chain and sprockets ... less than 20000k with Scott oiler ... that's why I'm waiting for new set

Its not only this tyre BTW, I had a Michelin Baja before lasting that long ... keep in mind that I do a lot of comuting which is slow wear and lots of Ks

In the other hand maybe your 250 has 70hp and u didn't realise ... :scooter:

Saturday 6
Showers becoming less frequent, possibly a few late snow flurries at the top of the Desert Road. Winds turning cold southerly.

Sunday 7
Showers becoming few and far between. Cold southerly winds.

Much of our riding out east will be between 1000m and 1400m...Waiouru township is at around 700m and the Desert Rd peaks just under 1100m if that's anything to go by.

Have something for windchill, and something to shed water. Don't forget some thermals for yer legs...

Don't sweat it though - it's all manageable!

Hard to predict mate, the weather can bring Crowded House, but it's often just being slightly damp and then getting cut with wind that makes for the worst. At least it's s'posed to be southerly...its the wind off Ruapehu to the west that's the real shitter.

It has snowed there in Xmas and even mid Jan before...blows the mind sometimes...

Wellington dudes riding up (less Marks) meet at Shell Mana before 7am, aim to be leaving Shell at or shortly after 7am.

Everyone meet at Waiouru Caltex 1030 am. If we're there early or ready to go we can shoot into camp, drop non essential equipment, pick up room keys, park car etc etc.

021650565 is my number if late or broken or whatever.

Briefing at Range Control 11am. This is the essential timing of the day. Someone is coming in from their weekend to give this manadatory brief to us.

~1130am we'll head out east for a couple of hours to the end of the Argo Road to see what we can see.

~2pm we'll come back through camp then head north alongside the highway and through the desert to Tukino Rd.

~4pm those travelling back to wellington Sat night need to decide if they're going to bail down SH1, or stay with the group going offroad most of the way back beside SH1 to camp.

Probably back in camp around 6-7pm to go and kill a burger and demolish some beer down the Oasis...

Sun morning - no plans, each to their own. Talk of the Wellies boys heading to Takapari Rd with Eddie? I'm keen, also keen to go south from Waiouru via Turakina valley rd.

Yeah mine got me home...just!

Lost the front brakes in waiouru...
lost the speedo south of Foxton...
Flat tyre just north of Waikanae...

Flat tyre turned out to be significant electrolysis from steel spoke nipples in the rim and a winter of the bike sitting at Wellington Airport each weekend... dug out the rot and filed back the flakes...not pretty, but yeah made it.

Helmet cam footage looks good, so will aim to have that up by end of the week.

I made it Sat night after 710K on the clock, having started at 6:15 am and finished 11:45 pm. I believe I may have failed to observe the speed limit in some areas (between Waiouru & Upper Hutt). Luckily the wobble on the road due to aggressive knobblies got better at night time! I'm very happy I'd spent a few bucks on the high powered bulb!

Bike seems fine, although lost at least one bolt, heaps of crap but already cleaned. now need to sort the water pump and 40000 service.

Due to the fact that I have a fu...d Magura master cylinder, it broke out there because of a needless and dumb manoevre I made.....

Mark, maybe have a look at a temporary repair using an epoxy like JB weld? The Magura clutch is hardly a highly stressed item, it's low pressure mineral oil stuff and as long as you get it oil tight it will be as good as new. As long as the joint site is clean I have repaired a huge range of broken bits with that stuff and it's $20 a tube........the trick is to clean well first, brake cleaner spray and the like to remove all oily residue.

Thanks for that Iain, I did consider it as I tossed it high and wide into the Rangipo Desert..:) However, it was a huge break, and serrated, it broke in three places due to the force....Not from shear speed I tell ya...:gob:More the angle of the impact...Funnily enough the lever is fine...

Ooops.....
Try a wanted thread in the off road section, you may be surprised what turns up.....I need both of mine so keep clear of my bikes!

PS, not as bad as the 1150 Adventure Javahead flipped a couple of years back, he was into a couple of grand for the BMW clutch assembly. :shit:

I've got 98% of a CRF450 Magura clutch here.
It broke the clamp part around the back of the bars.
I was running it on the Nordwest and it won't fit the DR :(

It may fit the DR400F though...

These are $530 from KTM, I searched high and low for a replacement. Even USA is approx $260 plus postage (USD)...Matching a similar model KTM would cost me $680 because I need a cable etc...SO........ I rang Husqvarna and spoke to a guy at my local shop....Same 10.5 Magura, will be here in 48 hours, will fit in 20 minutes or so...
$490 off the shelf, but can have it for $400....
Done deal, this enables me to ride for the weekend but now I can't eat, drink or pay my rates....:) I have priorities....Fix me bike.....hehe

KTM Magura may fit from different models but the slave and cable may be different....I have gone down that track. The compatible options were 640E, Duke, 640SM, and funnily enough a 125....and others, but I don't have that knowledge and if I bought it, I was stuck with the part and even then it might not be the right one....aint as easy as that...:(

Mate you rode like a demon for most of the weekend with no clutch, why not just forget about having one?
All you need to do is ride with mates who are nice enough to push you started every time you stop.

Nice work, esp on that first one - the road in the distance looks great. I've got 8 gig of helmut cam to edit...where to start. It will need music as the sound on my headcam is shit.

Mate, i just don't have the time at the moment. I've made a start but still trying to get the house sorted. Family have moved back in too and I've got a summer school paper to do...

So yeah, work in progress, nothing fancy but need more time. Will have a stab over the Xmas break.

Thanks Buggs...Yes, thoughts are with the family. Being Desert Storm, there would be someone there wondering why the rider was taking so long. Sad to be given the news....

Thats the second rider that has been killed at Desert Storm Rides.
There was another rider kiled there 3-4 years ago.

I hope it doesnt manage to kill off the ride.

This year is the first time i havent been there in the last 8 years and its always a great ride.

But as bike riders we all know the risks we take. Im sure thats part of the attraction of 2 wheels.

I was at a local bike park today and the ambulance was called to take a rider away with a broken leg. With the great weather we have been having up this way the ground is as hard as rock.
