View Full Version : Question about bike stands

Why do some bike stands raise the rear wheel off the ground? I've always wondered about this. Is there any particular reason why? and, if so, whats the benefit of such a bike stand?

If you mean a paddock stand, it makes lubricating chains, setting tyre pressures etc much easier if you can rotate the rear wheel...I wouldn't be without a paddock stand

My bike has a side/kickstand and a centre stand. I sue the side stand if I'm just parking up for a bit and the centre stand if I want to do anything like oil the chain or any other maintenance. I hear that side stands are good for parking in wind etc because they provide a bigger surface area for the bike to rest on. I guess some heavier bikes may not have a centre stand because they might be too heavy to get onto it easily (having to lift the back of the bike up and all).

+2 for that. I would not be without my Paddock stand either. I have one for the front as well. Great for servicing the scooter.. Chain cleaning, tyres, brakes etc...Even store my bike on it, when I am not riding it. Takes up a little less room.

Dude, how do you lube your chain? Or do you just leave it till the bike gets serviced at the shop?

Yes I have one for the front as well......took me a while last week to figure out why I could not get the axle back in after a tyre change. Bloody knob that sits in the bottom of the forks had moved up into the space for the axle once it had been removed......lucky I didn't hit it too hard with the hammer

+3. I have a centre stand, and it makes doing maintenance, like chain lubrication, so much easier and quicker.

My bike only has a side stand, and it's incredibly annoying. Checking the oil is a 2-person job. Or one person and some pieces of wood and the fear that the slightest breeze will knock my baby over.

I've since bought "real ones" (front and rear set off TardMe) but used this for a good while to oil and adjust the chain, install a belly pan and other stuff...

I got a huge jack on wheels that I have to heave around..... it never even occured to me that those stands would be much more convenient for chain maintanence....lol

Just a random note.
The Chch earthquake has shown that centre stands are less stable than side stands. Bikes parked on their centre stands are more likely to fall over. This is purely anecdotal.
Quite a few people (including me) had bikes damaged by falling from the centre stand, but those who had them on their side stand are reporting that they didn't fall over.
Like I said, just a random thought.

Yeah, the ferry thread on here http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/129263-Bike-on-ferry?highlight=Bike+ferry says the same thing. I have also seen that a centre stand is less stable in wind. When I arrived at uni the other day there was a scooter on its side which had been blown over by the wind, all the other bikes/scooters in the area were still up, and I notices that they were all on side stands, whereas the one which had fallen over had only a centre stand.
But yeah, they do make it a bit easier for maintainence etc

I've got one that doesnt have forks at each end, so it will work on a bike without bobbins. its got a bit of angle with a rubber block on it: works OK. Its an "FB" stand, made by a KE-er actually.
But Bike-lift do one.
(if thats an answer to your question: it might not be)

I don't - but to lube the chain etc I have a fence post off cut that I prop up under the outside foot peg to lift up the rear wheel.

I love centre stands, they allow me to take my bike to redline in top gear without getting any speeding tickets, wicked!

When I had the GN I had to struggle to get it on the center stand, bugger using one with the V, use a paddock stand.

Mate, centre stands are great, if the lift your rear wheel off the ground all the better, you can remove your rear wheel no problems, oil your chain, do all sorts of stuff you cant do with side stands.
Plus you can wait the rear and do all the service work on the front wheel.
After you have one you wonder why they are not on every bike. I comes down to weight and cost. They weigh a couple of kilos? that why sports bikes dont have them.
Of course a bike will be more stable on a side stand simple physics it has 3 points of contact with ground (like a Tripod) instead of two.
Apart from a bloody E/quake and a 100km/hr wellington gale, a centrestand is a better bet
Bikes with Centrestands:
Suzuki Bandits
Most BMW's
Honda Goldwing
Honda 800 VFR
Yamaha XJ1300
Yamaha FJR1300
Honda ST1300
any more?

Got one on the GPX. Useful for working on the bike and filling up with gas. And for when your sidestand vibrates loose in the middle of a ride with no tools to re attach it
