View Full Version : Classic run in Christchurch

Thinking about posting up a classic MC run in Christchurch. Is anybody interested?

Regular say monthly or weekly. Fine weather run. Going some where nice for a beer, coffee, and lunch. No bike too old or slow, but not really thinking about a moped run unless there is interest. Not exclusively limited to old bikes but as mine can only do 80kph I would like to keep off the highway system.

What do you think and is there any interest? :scooter:

EDIT:

This is what I put up....

Modern copies of old classics OK? I'm over head down, arse up, break neck speeds, so I'd be happy to pootle along. Monthly would suit me.

If that's the rules I could be keen, I think I can manage about 65ish on the scoot :scooter:.

Note to self: Get arse out to garage and replace head gasket and fix exhaust and petrol leaks on scooter

I'd be keen for that once the Kat is all sorted.

How about making a sunday monthly historic connection classic run on the first Sunday of the month.........

I was thinking about, but not limited to:

1, Summit road, being a historic road that was made by hand by out of work people during the depression, ending up at the Godley point ww2 gun emplacements (bring a torch).

2, Out to Okains bay on as many of the back roads as possible for a visit at the Okains museum.

3, Trip around Christchurch ending up at Wigram museum.

4, Trip around lake Ellesmere ending up at the Yaldhurst Transport Mueseum.

I was thinking about starting off at a central public public place, say the square at 10,00 or outside the canterbury mueseum at the same time. I don't want to limit it to just vintage-classic bikes, bring what you ride, but I don't go much faster than 80 kph so where ever we go it won't be a fast trip (for me that is).

What you think?

I have edited the first post, but....

Dec 5th 2010, Summit road, being a historic road that was made by hand by out of work people during the depression, ending up at the Godley point ww2 gun emplacements (bring a torch). You might consider bringing a picnic cut lunch and a thermos flask on this one. Bring a torch so you can go down into the underground magazines. It's well worth taking an hour or so to do a little exploring around this historic park area.

Leaving outside the Canterbury Museum 10,30. Bring what ever you like, but this will be a slow trip for some of us.

Might be a pretty learner friendly trip too for those that will not want to go much faster than 70 to 80k's per hour? Not suggesting that you need to have to 'watch over them' or anything, but the speeds that some of the old bikes are going to be traveling at, and cornering-wise I don't see the learners being left behind too much.

Just a thought, might not be good as the WNR is meant to be the learner friendly ride etc.

edit: maybe scratch the idea, learners get enough special treatment as it is without the likes of flip having to worry about learners on the sunday ride too

Nought stopping anybody going another route or even coming on this one, espcially on a Bantum or Cub, no problem with learners here.

It's just me and Ted going for a ride on our old bike, if anybody else wants to come they are welcome to tag along. The VCC don't organise too many rides so I thought I would.

I have added this ride to my diary. I doubt I'll have the Katana ready by then but I should be there on the Raptor. Very keen to have a look at the underground magazines so I should have a torch in hand as well.

If any learner wants someone to look after them or something I'll put my hand up. Seems Im getting slower in my old age and no longer like tearing up the roads at a million miles an hour like I used to, so I dont mind hanging at the back or anywhere they maybe.

I have a black-belt in nana-riding so that kind of modest pace would suit me fine - no feeling a need to fang-it everywhere or getting passed by ego-riders:yes:

Sunday Jan 2nd, Out to Okains bay on as many of the back roads as possible for a visit at the Okains Bay Museum.

http://maps.google.co.nz/maps?f=d&so...,0.877533&z=10

http://www.okainsbaymuseum.co.nz/

Start outside the Canterbury Mueseum at 10,00 for a 10,30 depature.

I'm not opposed to taking the around bays and going over Gebbies, but its going to be a long ride at 80kph for me as is. There is petrol and a small shop in Okains bay. Again like last time bring your walking shoes, a lunch and some thing to drink. There is a lovely beach which is worth a look see. Okains bay is very popular this time of year so expect to see a few people over there. Just a note about the road, the drop down from the summit road into Okains bay is very steep, I have to be carefull I don't burn my brakes out going down and it's a first gear slog for my old bike coming up.

It's going to be interesting doing the Akaroa GP on Sunday morning, but its nothing to worry about. Keep to the left and let them pass.

I suggest the we or at least the old bikes come back to town in a group. I should have Crowe on standby again with my ute if we need it.

Is the meeting point at the museum again? Sounds like a good ride. I will try find the cable for my cell phone and add some pics of that Porsche and Alfa Romeo and some of the bikes. If I'm in Chch on the 2nd then I'll probably be keen.

Cheers for organising it Flip. Did Ted enjoy the trip back? I assume him being wet on the way back helped the wind cool him down for the drive home.

Flip this is a great idea (just found the thread today), we need something like this in Wellington. Today I took the CJ on the annual toy ride, Paremata into town. I certainly wasn't last out of the starting blocks but was last by miles when we got to town.

Appears to me it turned into a race when we got on the motorway, everyone was flying past me. I lost sight of the last one around Tawa turnoff, got to the gorge and a couple of bikes past me and waved. I figured they were on the run and followed them which turned out to be the wrong way

It really surprised me when we were parked up and checking out the rides how modern, clean and shiny everything was. Was 1 super nice restored Commando, a couple of trumpies, 3 v8 trikes, 2 scooters and the other 500+ bikes were modern. You know the type that don't smell like motorsykles!

Yesterday I had the CJ on a Bronz charity ride for SPCA, did about 120km, most at a leisurely pace. I actually lead the pack for about half an hour. The ride into town was a tight group doing 70 - 80k.

Must look into this further.

I had a great day.... thoroughly enjoyed the summit today on the smaller bike. She coughed and spluttered a little bit but was beautiful on the way home with not a problem. So I think she was just telling me off for leaving her in garage for so long.

Two fellow lady "Classic bike owners" were sorry they missed the ride and promised they'll keep a better eye on the threads so perhaps next time the AJS and the other Honda and maybe even that gorgeous triumph her hubby has, will be out with us.

As well as the ride the wander about the Gun emplacements was really cool and between you all, it was fascinating listening to the bloke talk and getting the answers to my questions. A really great day and the photos are cool too!!
Thanks everyone, if I'm in town I'll see you next time.

What a great day for a ride :scooter:

The old scoot behaved herself, it seems I might have finally ironed out most of the bugs with it now, had a great ride along the summit road overtaking the tourists even if it was a bit of a grind in 2nd on a couple of the climbs. I might even be brave enough to take it a bit further afield next time, as long as I've got the whole day free to get there and home again.

Was good to have a bit of a poke around the bits and pieces at Godley Head (watching out for the bearded bogeyman hiding in tunnels in the dark), enjoying the sunshine and looking at the view.

There is petrol and a small shop in Okains bay.

You might want to check up on that as last time I was over there the shop had closed and they were trying to find someone to take it over. Very reasonable terms too I believe, especially if you had a few kids to bolster the school roll!.

It takes me ages to get the old bike over Dyers at the best of times. We have the climb over the Akaroa on this run.One slight change required to this - you've chosen to go up Worcester St from the museum to Cambridge Tce, but the section between Montreal and Cambridge is one way the other way, therefore heading up Hereford instead would be required like this (http://maps.google.co.nz/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Canterbury+Museum,+Christchurch,+Canterbury&daddr=-43.53206,172.632852+to:-43.53096,172.634525+to:-43.5342,172.6366+to:-43.54258,172.63662+to:-43.566,172.60382+to:-43.575731,172.585396+to:-43.61237,172.57098+to:-43.63057,172.56168+to:Okains+Bay+Store,+Okains+Bay +Road,+Okains+Bay&geocode=FRzFZ_0dkxZKCiGM8M4ETqrYfQ%3BFeTAZ_0dFCtKC ildpPF9PooxbTGB0TtMhu8AEw%3BFTDFZ_0dnTFKCikxeJVgPI oxbTFhwTtMhu8AEw%3BFYi4Z_0duDlKCikRNB9HPYoxbTHR6zt Mhu8AEw%3BFcyXZ_0dzDlKCimb_GxkEIoxbTFAQTxMhu8AEw%3 BFVA8Z_0drLlJCimtPKMEYiAybTERET1Mhu8AEw%3BFU0WZ_0d tHFJCil5aAqdRyAybTFij4yotzzhKA%3BFS6HZv0dZDlJCimnM LRv5iEybTEg0j1Mhu8AEw%3BFRZAZv0dEBVJCilZK4CSACIybT GA7z1Mhu8AEw%3BFRgMZf0dNW5QCiFIq-96brj5cw&hl=en&mra=dvme&mrcr=0&mrsp=1&sz=16&via=1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8&sll=-43.533492,172.632272&sspn=0.009131,0.016544&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=16).

Whats the road like over to the bay?

Flip
1st January 2011, 11:37
The road into the bay is narrow and steep. It takes me ages to get down because I have 30's technology brakes and its a first gear climb out.

The summit road is a bit narrow and very windy. But its very do-able.

It's all good, i went to okains bay a while back to pick up a tag, summit road from hilltop and down to the bay was all good, and from there to akaroa via the summit road was good too.

I might make this, I'll see how adventurous I'm feeling on the day.

I was actually there today, the petrol status is:

due to a lack of petrol in Chch (something like this) they are out of 91, but they do offer diesel.

So at least flip's sidecar is covered :innocent:

I have talked my uncle into coming tomorrow, he does not have a vintage bike, but he is no Rossi either.

Anyway!!!!!!!! Rather a good run today. When we all arrived at our destination!!!!!

Rather like the words of the old song "Do you know the way to San something, something, something...................

I followed the example of our "fearless leader" and took a wrong turn and did a tiki tour of Little Akaloa. A rather steep road in both directions.

Had a neat ride also, got stung by some thing on the way home so I am sitting quietly at home and have taken some antihistamine.

The head wind on the way home kept my speed to under 80kph was a bit of a bugger. I am really pleased with how the old bike is running now.

Great ride today, not too much wind compared to the last WNR's. I think that summit road could be part of a WNR to akaroa, it has some great corners and less traffic.

What you need flip, to power through that 90k barrier is supply Mrs Flip, or Ted with an oar like the Maori use on the Waka's

OH what a great way to spend the day. the knight on the trusty "ehem ehem" stead arrived this morning and off we went for just the best jaunt around the Canterbury countryside.
Once I learnt how to extricate myself from the sidecar all was well!
the heat was intense hence the ehem about the trusty stead but the on board mechanic had it sussed in 15 minutes flat. I mean who carries spare head gaskets or is that something classic riders just know intuitively!!
On to the museum and BADGRL turned up to say hi!
Was quite the feeling sitting in that side car with the wind back in my face and watching the country go by!! awesome guys and thanks so much flip for taking me out today. Here's some pics.

Sounds like a plan. :)

If no one is actually stopping in Oxford, I'd advise avoiding Main St - since Jo Seagar opened her cafe a few years back, Oxford gets pretty crowded at the weekend, particularly on Sundays.

If people aren't afraid of half a km of gravel it's easiest to turn left opposite the pub and take Mill rd, Bush rd and Church st (http://maps.google.co.nz/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Hororata,+Canterbury&daddr=-43.2939689,172.1743454+to:Church+St+to:Loburn+Scho ol,+Hodgsons+Road,+Loburn,+Canterbury+to:Christchu rch+Northern+Motorway&geocode=FVGpZ_0d19E_CinlFwaF0uYtbTEQ4nmEhu8ABQ%3BF fBia_0dCSxDCinvJH5F1B0ubTFxQZJMhu8AEw%3BFSRua_0dLl 5DCg%3BFZMObP0djJhICiFnZniCUCemzCnF5YkEkOoxbTFeNj3 e_KURUg%3BFdVpaf0dt2pKCg&hl=en&mra=dpe&mrsp=1&sz=15&via=1&sll=-43.29648,172.192326&sspn=0.028455,0.066047&ie=UTF8&z=15), but if people want to avoid gravel or stop for fuel, most of the traffic and both pelican crossings are after Bay rd, so you can stop at the Challenge and take Bay rd then Church st (http://maps.google.co.nz/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Hororata,+Canterbury&daddr=Church+St+to:Loburn+School,+Hodgsons+Road,+L oburn,+Canterbury+to:Christchurch+Northern+Motorwa y&geocode=FVGpZ_0d19E_CinlFwaF0uYtbTEQ4nmEhu8ABQ%3BF SRua_0dLl5DCg%3BFZMObP0djJhICiFnZniCUCemzCnF5YkEkO oxbTFeNj3e_KURUg%3BFdVpaf0dt2pKCg&hl=en&mra=mrv&sll=-43.29648,172.192326&sspn=0.028455,0.066047&ie=UTF8&z=15).

It's going to be a long wait for Santa for me then, I think....When in video mode are you happy with the GoPro? When I was using a cheaper bike mounted video the vibrations of the bike went in and and out of synch with the frames per second of the camera. The result was just rubbish. Do you get a lot of wind noise in video mode?

I've only had the camera a couple of weeks, so I'm still playing around with it to figure out which shooting mode I like best, but given it's size and pricing I'm pretty happy with the video quality.. If you want to check out some footage, Peeteey uses the exact same camera, shooting at 720p, so if you check out his youtube channel at http://www.youtube.com/peeteey, you'll see plenty of example footage.
I need to do some more daylight shooting to get more comparison footage, but I am beginning to think I might also go with 720p, as 1080p has a narrower field of view which I don't like quite as much, and I'm not sure I'll be doing slowmo shots often enough for the doubled framerate of 720p60 to be worth it.
Anyway, if you don't need to shoot in 720p60 or 1080p, there's the GoPro Hero 960, which is pretty much identical except for the lack of those two shooting modes, and is a bit cheaper.

As far as the audio goes, there is a fair bit of wind noise, but not as much as I was expecting. It's also worth noting that GoPro say that the non-waterproof backdoor will provide better sound up to 100mph, but I haven't tried it as I don't really care about the sound either way, I'm really only interested in the video footage.

Hey fellas. The 1080 model has the Herobus port on the back, an extension port, but the 960 doesn't. That's the only other difference.
That port could be useful if you're like me and always want to 'play' with things and make them do something they're not really supposed to.
The one thing I'm gonna get is the external battery pack. It should double your battery life and also, when it's not on the camera, it can be charged via USB so now, finally, the Gopro has an external battery charger!
There's also an LCD screen for it so you can see what you're recording and also playback footage on camera.

As for wind noise, it's not too bad with the closed back on it, especially if you roll all the tops off the EQ in your editor. The sound is still crap when compared to an actual video camera but it's better than most action type cams around.
The open back is basically a wind noise fest! I can't use it but lots of people do, maybe I'm just picky ... well, ok, I am picky!

Buyasta, it's interesting hearing you say you're gonna go 720 instead of 1080. I was watching back the footage you gave me and I was thinking that the 720 60fps makes it look so much smoother! It's not as good in low light but hey, it looks nice and crisp!
Granted the 1080 has a narrower field of view but it's still plenty wide and would look great! I think I'm becoming a resolution snob!
I just can't use the 1080 mode on my cam 'cause of some dead pixels that show up when I do! :(

Yeah, like I said, I need to play around with it some more to do more of a comparison - I haven't shot any in standard 720p to compare the smoothness, and I've really only shot a tiny bit in 1080p, which looked like crap because the sun was about 90% set and there just wasn't enough light.
So yeah, I'm beginning to consider 720p, which I hadn't really done before because I'm also a bit of a resolution snob, but I definitely haven't decided yet - I basically need to film a decently lit ride each in both 720p and 1080p so I can do a proper apples to apples comparison of the footage.

I think 720 at 60fps is about as good as it's going to get because of the extra smoothness and lower warping of the image.
At 30fps, when there is fast movement you get blurring of fast moving frames but at 60fps this is dramatically reduced so even the high action looks nice.
However, it does take up a lot more space! Anyone want to donate a nice fast 32gb SDHC card or seven? :D

Won't see you tomorrow or Sun. Practising for a crazy gig up in Nelson.

Hmmn, righto, may be worth sticking with 720p60 then, but like I said, I do plan on doing a comparison when I have time.
Filesize really isn't much of a concern - I'm using a 32GB SD card, so I run out of battery before space, and anytime I charge the battery I'd be emptying the SD card anyway, so the only reason I was considering 720p over 720p60 was if there wasn't any real difference in smoothness, as it would either cut encoding times in half if I left footage at 60fps, or remove the necessity of cutting the framerate if I went with 24/30fps output.

Ahh, you don't know what you are missing!! Thankfully I can say that being a chick and since I don't have any brass balls to freeze off, it'll be sweet (providing it doesn't rain!!)

:killingme......check the weather report Kiwi, cos sorry to say it mate....I think your in for a "experiance" weather wise for the brass monkey this year.(balls or not..somethings gonna get frozen off lol)

And Im firmly with Peeteey on this subject....warmth = good!....standing in muddy padock freezing arse off = BAD! (and whats with that large ball of burning fire up in tha sky?....burns us it does!)
Besides...ride with strangers?...or ride with you crazy/fun guys n girls.....easy choice!.

Have a great trip tho Kiwi , try to stay out of trouble...no fighting!:girlfight:, racing!:scooter: or illegal gambling!:mega: (I did say "try"!)....We will think of you on sat night...while im sitting infront of the fire...cosy...warm...and remembering the time it was so cold my tent shattered!..........oh yes.....that cold!

Ride safe Kiwi .....& of course everyone else whos going.:cold::love:

The great thing about the brass is the hulking great big bonfire they light to keep us all warm! Very toasty. Besides last year there was about 4in of snow, so cozy as!
