View Full Version : Well shit, dropped the scoot

Bugger it, was following a car turning left into Great North Road today, threw a look over the shoulder to check the traffic, looked back forwards only to see the car had basically stopped in the lane to turn into a driveway a few metres from the intersection. Had no chance of stopping as I was still accelerating, locked the front, hit the car, dropped it on the right side, did a little flip in the air and landed on my left side a few metres from the bike. It was over in a second.
The other driver left because "she had an appointment" so I called the cops, someone else had already called an ambulance but I was ok. The gear did it's job, no skin lost just a sore shoulder and knee and general aching.
The driver came back 15 mins later, turned out she was a disqualified driver so the cop told me her car (well actually as I understand it, her ex-boyfriends car who didn't know she had it) was going to be impounded for 28 days. Suck, felt kind of sorry for her because it wasn't her fault, but then her abusive passenger & the fact she was actually driving while disqualified changed my mind about that.
I got a ticket for "travelling too fast to be able to stop, sudden stop by car in front" which was fair enough, scoot has some panel damage but it's covered by insurance. Hope the forks etc are ok, otherwise I guess it might get written off.
Ah well, that'll learn me.

Glad you got off reasonably lightly damage wise.
Glad another disq. driver got snapped too. She was disq. for a reason...

On a moped?
I'd think it might be more likely to be "travelling too near to the vehicle in front"!
Glad you're alright, mate. I used to follow your adventures on the Jog (coz I was considering one) and remembered you disappeared for a while and I thought I remember reading something not too pleasant on another site somewhere... but glad you're back

50CCs of fury mate lol.
If I'd been looking forwards the whole time I could've stopped, but by the time I was actually looking forward I never had a chance, too close, not enough stopping power. Locking the front certainly didn't help
What pisses me off the most is that I usually wear a video camera on my helmet, but wasn't today because I forgot to charge it over the weekend. Would've made a great video

Good to see your ok an typing about it, pity about the front of the scoot though its a big panel to replace and if the forks are damaged in any way it will be written off.
I've had two close ones last week in the opposite situation, nearly getting rear ended while stopped at red lights. The second would have crushed me if I hadn't seen them coming and moved into an empty turn only lane. (and they say they come in threes?)

@OP glad you weren't seriously injured.:)

yeah man, boots, cordura pants & jacket, leather gloves and helmet. I like my skin, I'd like it to hang around as long as possible
There's not a scratch or rip on any of it, well pleased, although I'm thinking I should replace the helmet. I don't remember anything between starting to go down and finding myself lying on the road. Although there are no marks on it, I can't be sure it didn't hit anything.

Cheers spearfish, hopefully it was 3 things to happen to scooters in general this week and I was the third :)

Got it assessed today, forks are still straight as, so its basically all panel damage except for the exhaust which also needs replacing (came down that side).
State want to see it for themselves tomorrow, so hopefully they don't decide to write it off anyway. (Although I admit I was eyeing up the showroom lol)
I'm a hell of a lot more sore today, right across both shoulders and down my back. Feels like a muscle ache, but no bruising or anything. Can't lift left arm too much above horizontal without really feeling it, and left knee is a bit swollen. Guess thats what I came down on.

Oh yea, that I understand  had a wee 50cc 2-smoker Vespa myself and while it wouldn't beat the Jog in top speed, it still got to an indicated 75km/hr (probably 68km/hr true speed). And we're not yet talking about modding! If I live in the city again I might just get a Jog and...

Could be a good thing if state decide to keep it if your ready to move up either to another larger scoot or go to the dark side, depending on your class 6 licence situation.

State man is happy to replace panels etc so parts will be ordered. Nothing but great service from State & Mike @ Red Baron so far.

Was riding home today down Dominion Road and noticed how fast scooters get along compared to me on a motorcycle....probably because I have been knocked off commuting on several occasions over the years ( and I'm an old bastard) I used to commute daily in London and it was a lot easier than Auckland...the drivers were more predictable.
Now I watch for cars letting other cars turn right when they are stationary....
And cars coming out of side streets barely slowing for stop and give way signs.
I saw an ambulance city side of Mt Roskill and a scooter on the footpath, I stopped to ask if he/she was ok...apparently ok but a bit stunned. Car had turned right accross the bus lane and scooter was not seen. Be careful out there scooter riders ...bus lanes are dangerous.:shit:

Yeah, that is definately something to watch for, get it a lot down Great North Road, but if you're aware pretty easy to spot. You can usually see the gap in the traffic, and usually the car turning too. Just have to assume they haven't seen you, because, well, they won't have and be very prepared to stop.

+1 on that one
Simple rule to keep me slightly safer.
"Not one person has seen you or will do what they should unless they physically have to"
second rule
"Dont get paranoid about the first one" LoL
DM, your ride takes you past western springs?

Sure does. Great North Road from Williamson Ave in Grey Lynn all the way to Swanson Road in Henderson. (with a little detour down Rata/Ash Sts.)

There isn't much covering your ankles, just a little skin and I'd prefer that to remain there, rather than being ground off along the road surface! Turns out I'd torn muscle in my shoulder, but that has mostly healed up, just feel the odd twinge every now and then.
:violin:
Just waiting for the parts to come in now. I taped my indicator lens back on the meantime so the scoot doesn't look quite so sad lol

I've once went out on my little Vespa in full leather gear. It was fun... to see the reactions of passer-bys
Fun aside, I still wear at the minimum a bike jacket (usually non-leather), jeans, bike gloves and some sort of boots

Since the cager was disqualified, does that mean she was in the wrong? Or do you have to pay your excess for repairs?
Bad luck about the off mate but I'm glad you're ok, and that you wear the right gear, I see so many scooter riders in a sweatshirt, shorts and jandals. Id hate to see the aftermath of an accident with one of them.

Nah, I was still in the wrong because I did the rear ending. As the nice policeman handed me my ticket he said to me "She may be disqualified and shouldn't have been on the road, but being disqualified doesn't mean she's forgotten how to drive" so yeah, still my fault. I did hear the cop saying she'd been disqualified for 18 months, wonder what you have to have done to get that kind of ban?
Luckily my excess is only $100, so not a big deal in that respect, and her car is covered too, although I didn't see any damage on it, I just bounced off it like a rubber ball I think lol.

I know what you mean, I see one chick quite often, always in an open face helmet, mini skirt and heels. Whilst it's nice to look at at the moment, I cringe at the potential for carnage should she come off.

Wow, $100 excess isn't bad, I think mine is about $900 (restricted licence, under 25)
Yeah, I always see people around uni on scooters wearing bugger all. One guy still had the protective plastic over the visor of his helmet, you know, the thing with all the writing about what features the helmet has?

Wow, $100 excess isn't bad, I think mine is about $900 (restricted licence, under 25) Ouch, that's almost half of what my scoot is insured for. Guess that's the benefit of being an old bugger on a full license. (is mid 30s old? feels like it sometimes lol)

No, it means she clearly can't drive, has no clue as to how to comply with the legal requirements of driving, and should not have been on the road under any circumstances.
Bollocks attitudes like this piss me off. I'd wager that of the two of you, you will be the only one to pay the fine.

Judging by her attitude on the roadside (leaving the scene, not asking if I was ok etc) that wouldn't surprise me at all.

But don't worry, if she leaves it long enough, it will just get wiped off her record.

Yay, after waiting for the parts to arrive, I dropped the scoot off to Red Baron yesterday who had it all repaired and ready to go by the end of the day. Awesome!
Total repair cost was $880 odd dollars, thankfully I have a $100 excess.
Only thing was they seem to have re-wired the stebel in reverse so it just kind of wheezes now so guess I'll be pulling it apart again this weekend...
