View Full Version : Cheap laughs.

Did you ever direct your mate into a water hole with assurances of it's depth, knowing all the while it was a bike eater...?
Roost him out of a mud hole?
Lean over and flick his kill switch?

Cheap laughs are sometimes the best...

I stood on the other side of this hole waiting for Rick.
When he arrived, I assured him it was a mere splash.

As he tried to start it, the fatigue must have addled his brain and he got my name wrong - he muttered something like "Thanks Munt" or Lunt or maybes it was "Thanks Bunt"

I laugh whenever I think of that day. We were plotting a route for the 1981(?) enduro champs and someone had this great idea "let's make the experts go under the bridge". So we told Phil that it was easy and promptly watched as he went over the bars and dropped the "mighty" XR200. You can see that my PE is parked in the background, far enough away that it was too far for me to walk back and get on it and try to go under the bridge!

The good old days - wow I even brushed my hair back then. Thanks for posting that Phil!

Thompsons track, on the eastern side. "You can ride through that easy! Just hit it with plenty of speed" My dad claimed. Didn't quite click as to why he was saying that whilst standing on the sidelines with a camera in his hands...

OK, OK, I couldn't resist, and touched it up a bit. That fluro vest thing was annoying me so I put a new jacket on him. Picture's been sharpened up a bit also. :innocent:

This guy had a problem too.

http://i990.photobucket.com/albums/af29/bart-nz/MMMMM/IMG_7584.jpg

The whole track was solid ice.

http://i990.photobucket.com/albums/af29/bart-nz/MMMMM/IMG_7585.jpg

But then everyone pulled over and let this guy passed

http://i990.photobucket.com/albums/af29/bart-nz/MMMMM/mmmmmore/IMG_7578.jpg

and the big splash he made cleared away all the ice.

Half the problem was people going too slowly and needing throttle to get out of the stream beds, momentum is wonderful!

Having said that, I had a fair bit of momentum going into the next stream and tried using my de-momentum devices......it is possible to cross a stream sideways with both wheels locked, not nice but possible.

:

I don't think lack of momentum was the issue for Joe

http://i990.photobucket.com/albums/af29/bart-nz/MMMMM/IMG_7573.jpg

It was the munty trucks that had been through before us. The water they'd throwen up had frozen on the exit side. The truck that we pissed off cleared the ice, but this would have re-frozen in minutes.

I came towards this stream in :third: place, and within a few millisecond was in :first:, almost taking out Carey and Clint in the process. Bloody lucky I didn't end up horizontal IN the stream. But hey, all good fun. :scooter:

I didn't see Joe go down, I was long gone by then, I just made the assumption that he had lost the rear and the only reason for that is wheelspin, the only reason for wheelspin is throttle and the only reason for throttle is a lack of momentum to carry him over the "obstacle".
I do accept that those big motors have a lot of horsepower available at a twitch of the throttle and it is really easy to overdo it, been there, done that!

Quite happy to accept my logic may be flawed, as I said, I wasn't there. YMMV

Well if you can't laugh at yourself who can you laugh at?

This photo, New Year 2010, Dunedin, who do I find trying to find the secret to KTM longevity but that cunning Naki Lad Phreaky Phil deep in the bowels (well deep for me) of my 990. You can see that I have already spit the dummy and thrown my tools on the ground (btw what is the thing with the wire on it for).

Yep we did a trip around the South Island and luckily with KTM's being the marvellous bikes they are, the only morning she didn't want to start was the first place we had been with a KTM dealer! Phew.

And of course Murphy was there, why is it that you only find that a bike won't start when you have all your gear on and everything tied on ready to go? Add that to Murphy's law book.

The worst part of all this though was that Dawn and Leanne quickly took the opportunity and escaped to the shops. The best part is they couldn't buy anything as we had no room to store it :-)
