Hey guys n gals I wanna ask some advice here.
Over the past 30 years Bikes and bike riding have been my overriding passion.
I've lived breathed bikes for a long time.
Last few years since I opened our car/bike yard i've just got to feeling jaded at the whole thing. Kinda. "should I take the bike out for a ride--Nahhh can't be bothered"
I've remembered/rediscovered a whole heap of other sports i meant to try or was involved in and motorcycles just meant it couldn't happen.
I'm seriously thinking that I need to stop selling bikes so its not part of my life 24/7
Or maybee taking a break from riding for a lil while.
Has anyone else felt that way and if so how did ya deal with it?

Agreed, did the same. However don't do anything hasty, we go through stages in our lives and you may have finished with bikes forever, but then you may find after a time, as I did, that you'd like to get back on again. Go with the flow and don't stress over it.

If you enjoy selling bikes, and have a good rep for it, I'd be reluctant to give them up completely, money is money after all.

One of my "problems" is in owning a great bike that I love. Then mates come around and talk about doing trips away and we get the commaraderie coming out again...

If you are not enjoying riding, at the mo, then don't. Who says you have to, anyway?
Sooner or later, you will want to ride again, even if it's only occasionally.
In the meantime, I could do with what you aren't spending on gas etc...

Go and do something else for a wee while mate, park the bike(s) up and follow some other things that you've been meaning to do. Whenever you feel like throwing a leg over a bike, you'll have one at least to do so!

You may be experiencing burn out from the busy aspects of your life and need to find some chill out time away from those problems. Go take a walk on the beach, fly a kite, take a day trip out to a lovely spot you haven't been to in a while (not necessarily on a bike!)

Take some time out for yourself!

40 years as a mechanic,it's just a job and bikes are my life.I've been a bike mechanic a couple of times - and both times lost interest in bikes.Don't make your passion your daily life,it just sucks the joy out.

Used to love photography and joined the Airforce to be a photographer and ended up doing weddings as well.

Did that for two years, got out of it, barely picked up a camera since.

They say never make your passion a job or never make your hobby a job.

Don't pull out all together. Just put your bikes aside for a bit and see if the lovin feeling returns after an absence cos they also say absence makes the heart grow fonder.

I'm already in cold turkey after selling my bike. Funny things is if you choose not to ride your bike its still there if you want to. Once its gone you can't ride it if it aint there. :)

Give it time mate.

Well, yeah - there is that approach. Having a several month forced break worked for me too. The longest involuntary period without riding I've had in the last 20 years.

Ditto. I worked for a couple of years in a bike shop and found the same thing. I also enjoy that having left I no longer feel obliged to have so much loyalty to a specific brand and am thinking of switching back to a Guzzi. Or maybe I might even get a Japanese bike.

Well, I've made a passion a job and it worked for me .. but a hobby ? No way .. that's the quickest way to kill of that interest ....

Loved photography - but worked in the media taking photos - killed off that hobby ... I never took a picture on holiday and I rarely carry a camera these days except for work ..

If you want to keep with bikes - drop it as a job .. if you're losing interest in riding that's my suggestion ... Many bike sales people I know go dirt riding or track racing , not road riding ... but if you're losing interest - lose the job ..

Same thing happened to me.Have been into bikes 30 years.December 2008 got the bike i always wanted.Falco Sl 1000.ended up doing 15000 km in 1 year, every weekend or free moment on the bike and then November 2009 I could not be bothered taking the bike out anymore.Sold the bike and took up bucket racing.Get my kicks and rush out of racing 150 cc mtorcycle around kart tracks.Enjoy bikes and maybe one day might get a road bike again but for the moment I am happy and content racing a bucket once a month.

As I said on the phone the other day mate, perhaps it is time for some of the other things in your life to come to the fore. Nothing like abstinence to make you yearn for something again. I still can't believe you've managed to live and breathe nought but bikes for 30 years. I need at least 3 or 4 obsessions at any one time.

Can you get someone to manage / run the business so you don't have to day in and out? Even for a while to see if it changes your view?

I.T was a hobby for me. I made it my job and 20 years later I'd give it away if I could afford to.

I'm one of those types that hobby != job.

.....been thinking about why I dont want to jump up and get out on the bike as early as possible on a free day like I used to....got the choice of what I ride and possibly some of the best riding roads in existence, starting about 30 meters from my gate......it IS NOT lack of love or loss of interest as far as I can work it out...its more about being involved heavily in the running of a racing club...my sons being involved in the game ...my wife deciding a couple or three years back that she wanted a bike and the life that goes with it...being fucking tired from running my own bizzo and not having the same amount of energy I used to have....all pretty similar reasons to the other posters who reflect your feelings....maybe a change is necessary....I know that five minutes into a ride, Im back in the groove...

Sometimes it takes someone close to remind you why you like doing something.

I know I get that feeling over summer with the boat, but the kids soon nag me out of it and I end up enjoying myself.

Its like anything else in life- you have to find balance. Too much of a good thing becomes a bad thing.

So bucket racing one weekend, and proper racing another...

When things get a bit like that, I reckon it's time for a holiday. A week off work, no plans, no going away, no list of chores, just chill out, after about lunch time on Monday something will happen, whether it be deciding to fook about in the garden, do the odd bit of maintenance, go for a ride, go fishing, rediscover your music collection, watch an old movie, go shopping, wander down the pub, whatever.

The point is that you'll do it because you want to, not because you feel you have to. The big thing is to get over feeling guilty about not doing the things you would normally be "obligated" to do - bugger them, you're on holiday. Also resist anyone else loading you up with their wishlists "since you don't have to go to work this week". You don't have to go to work this week, BECAUSE YOU ARE TAKING SOME TIME OUT.

Who knows, maybe by Wednesday you'll be itching to go for a burn up, or maybe you'd rather take a pottery lesson and do some Tai Chi.

you know some people used to say 'to find your dream job, find something you love doing in your own time, and turn it into a job' well that just wouldnt work, for th eworld to go round theres all kindsa things that need to be done, if everyone followed that logic, the world would go to hell, whod clean toilets, work in sewerage, etc etc etc.

Frankly, I beleive that hobbies should be left as such, because if you incorporate your hobbies into your work, thats what they become, Work.
You need to have something outside of work/family/kids, that gives you something to look forward to, something to relax, enjoy and use as a way of getting away from the daily grind and day to day bullshit.
thats my opinion anyway. its great to enjoy your job, im not saying you shouldnt, but you need to have something thats there for fun, and for no other reason.

Time and place for everything in life Frosty. If ya not feeling like riding don't. Give it a rest. Do something else. If urge comes back for riding it will. To me that is the whole put of riding is having the freedom to choose to ride or not.
Yes making ya hobby work does kill ya joy for ya hobby. Becoming a Farrier (Horse-shoer) kill my joy of Horse Riding. Anytime I turned up to competition, people would bug me to repair their horses' Shoes. Good for work, but bad for relaxing in to enjoying my hobby. First Thing that happened was I changed my hobby so that I could enjoy my time away from work. Then finally I changed my Job. I should have changed my job first. Will never make a Hobby work again. Ya have ya hobby to enjoy ya non-working life. Away to de-stress from ya work stress, to give ya a reason to have something to look forward that is not work related.

When a hobby becomes a job something goes missing.

All the people who tell you to find something you love, do it and you'll never 'work' another day in your life are idiots (who want to believe that it is true)

Time away from riding won't kill you. There will come a time when you're ready again. Until then just you look after you.

Frosty!
I hear ya. Sometimes I wonder why I keep doing this myself.
Last year I did some adventure riding out in the dessert. It was so rejuvenating!!! I was instantly back in love with riding!
Then came this past race season and all the crap came back. Plus I'm involved in the running of the local club now (www.afmracing.org), so it can make the race weekend a bit less fun. So I backed off on the racing and have been riding dirt again, which tickles me pink all over!

Mostly, I've found that doing track instruction keeps me going. It's such an honor to get to ride with people and share things with them and watch them get better and better! Without that, I'd prolly hang it up and just stick to the dirt (no pun intended) every now and then.

Take a break if you need to. Bikes will always be here for you. Your friends will always be here too, with a cold brew in wait.

Get an office job.
I’m sitting in one right now and it’s not what I’d call work.
And now I can tie a tie!
I have only picked up tools a few times in the last 6 months and I’m in no hurry to set foot in another workshop.
Sounds like you need a break.
One thing though, a change is not as good as a rest.
A rest is as good as a rest, a change is more of the same with a new view.
