View Full Version : Oil leak

Hey guys, my day just went from fairly okayish to absolutely crap.

Took my ZXR250A to get the warrant of fitness done, sprung a slight oil leak when I pulled in so I shot back home to see if I could sort it. Was coming out of the sump plug so I tightened it up but it just got worse and worse and worse :-( I'm sure you can see where i'm going with this, the casing that the sump plug screws into was basically non existent, had split in half.

What can I do? Does this mean a new engine? - Which i'm sure would be near impossible to come by one these days.

Any help would be appreciated, and if it can't be easily fixed, I guess I should just sell it for parts?

I had my FZR sump repaired, as it was cracked and threads were munted. Aluminium engineer welded crack and fitted a heli-coil. New gasket and all was mint.

May depend how bad yours is, but there's always replacement parts new or used.

don't fear, as the wise Owl has said an aluminium welder should be able to sort it.

Or I'm sure there are plenty of belly pans lying around the wreckers - the bikes/motors are usually written off for many other things - not usually stripped sump plugs.

FWIW radiator places usually do good jobs welding alloys.

Thanks guys I'll give that a go! I think they may have to actually weld a new screw part in as I hadn't realised what was happening when I was tightening it up (pushed the bolt through and spit it, but we shall see)

Thanks guys!
