FYI Kiwi Biker dudes, blatant advertising sorry but I hate it when people say "oh man I would have loved to do that, why didnt you tell me?"

Adventure Rider Training 2011

January 15th, 16th and 17th, 2011

With Chris Birch & Robbie Crickett

Following on from the success of our recent Adventure Training Event in Rotorua, KTM, Chris Birch and the team at High Country Trail are doing it again in Central Otago in January.

The concept is a 3 day led adventure ride fully suitable for any big adventure bikes with building skills the emphasis, especially on the 1st day. Under the instruction of our kiwi “Romaniac” and adventure riding enthusiast Chris Birch mounted on KTMs new 690R, you’ll learn and practice fundamental & advanced skills. Then you’ll have some ‘time on the bike’ to cement the learning.

Included in the $795 entry cost are all ride day meals, 4 nights accommodation on a share twin basis. Days 2 & 3 will consist of a 600km adventure ride led by High Country Trail’s Robbie Crickett on the KTM 990 through gravel roads and tracks of Central Otago. Back up vehicle and sweep crew included.

The dates of this Alexandra based event are confirmed as January 15th, 16th and 17th. Numbers will be limited.

So yeah, should be good times.

The following weekend you could come and wow us all Birchy by doing the Dusty Butt 1000km (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/130674-DB1k-2011-Official-thread) ride (as a one dayer not a two dayer like all us softies). Be good training ride for the Dakar :msn-wink:

I'd be in but for the Dusty the following weekend.

690R?

Birchy you wimp. Do it on the DR!

Although if I was given the chance to do an adventure ride on a 690, I don't think I could turn it down either.

mmmm, if I slept in my own tent and heated up my own spagetti in a tin on my own cooker how affordable would that make it or do I assume it's a package take it or leave it... not that I'd be able to manage to get there between my christmas/new year trip and the Dusty Butt either anyway :bye:

Ditto.

Is there a mailing list I can sign up to so I know about the next NI event? I need the training.

For a three day ride and training with a very good coach, meals and accomodation, that is a very good price. I know we are all as tight as a snappers arsehole but you can learn a hell of a lot in 3 days and have a good ride, stop whinging about the cost and support the concept at least.

I feel better now.

The concept is great :niceone:, never thought otherwise, but I just want to pay for the knowledge and land access, not the fancy trimmings.
Of course if the trimmings aren't fancy and that cost is mostly for the Knowledge and access then I will always be stuffed.
I know, I know....:violin:

Dear cheepskates  Yeah this is more of a "premium package" including land access, food, accomodation, support vehicle etc and three to four staff. This adds up pretty quick!

I'll be doing some cheaper, one day, Auckland based courses some time soon. Robbies ride is going to be sweet, if its within your means its going to be a hell of a good time.

I can recommend Chris' one day training courses, I learnt heaps. And it was bloody good fun.

Yeah. We tried getting him down here for for a course but he bailed at the last minute.

Some weak excuse about "Romaniacs" :scooter:

As requested a cheaper option near Auckland.

Auckland: 19 February 2011

An adventure ride in North West Auckland. This ride is suitable to all level adventure riders, on all types of off road capable adventure bikes.

A day out learning and riding with one of New Zealand’s top riders. We will ride on a combination of farm land, sand, dirt trails and gravel roads, with instructions and demonstrations on skills needed for taking your adventures further off road. Off road skills covered include cornering, braking, hills, line selection, clutch control, finding traction, and how to get out of trouble!

There are many different options along the route to ensure that all skill levels are catered for – no one gets bored, and no one gets scared (maybe just a little, to get the blood pumping!). The group is kept to a maximum of 6 riders to ensure safety and maximum learning.

The ride starts and finishes in Waimauku, with home cooked wood fired pizza to finish off what promises to be an awesome day out on the bikes.

Limited spaces available so book now.

Cost: $300 per person

do you need knobbies for these rides/courses?

The more off road capable your tires are the more fun you will have.

Hmm, My E-07's are not really an off-road option.

Can anyone point me out a cheap / partworn / whatever! knobblier option for the Freewind? Running 19" front and 17" back (100/90-19 and 130/80-17 right now).

Just bought a GPS so funds are tight!

So would you not advise trying it on a 400SM? I've done everything (barkbusters, case guards etc) thus far, bar forking out the $1.4k for offroad wheels.

Keen as hell to give it a spin though - have been doing every metal road I can find in the last twelve months. :)

Kenda 760 rear and... a 19" MX rear on the front with the side knobs cut off?

Haha you'd probably still do better than me on your slicks!

You can get 17" dirt front tyres for the small wheel DR-Z 125, no? And 17" rear is standard...

I can do mine OK, I'm just trying to do it on the cheap!

You can tell I am a bit ignorant here, so help me out: what's wrong with a 760 front? The which tyre thread had OK feedback on them on the front...

Not that I want to spend that much, ideally... anyone got any part-worns lying around they are willing to part with in/about AKL?

Not a lot wrong with them. Just a bit aggressive for normal adventuring but for a training day they'd be pretty good.

Goddit, thanks. Looks to be the cheapest outfit if I can't find another solution before then, but TBH it adds over $200 to a $300 day... so it's a stretch on current finances!

Hey Chasio - your cheapest option is cost of freight for my Mitas EO9 19" front.
Apologies for the thread hijack Chris.

I can heartily recommend XF650 Tyre Services. Good tyres, prompt delivery.

His bike transport service isn't too shabby either.

Good Bugger Services alright, and he's also right about a bit of a thread hijack (mea culpa), so PM's have been sent and here's a reminder that this is really about the training!

A bump for this thread and also... see the comments in this post (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/31920-Tyre-choice-for-adventure-riding-%28Mixing-road-and-off-road%29?p=1129942423#post1129942423) about using an MT60 as an option on the front.
