Hey KB,

I'm looking at moving to Perth in January 2011 for the year. Wanting to know who's been there/lived there? Good places to live/work etc? Costs of living? What is the place like for young people like myself?

Don't really care as i'll do anything for a year as it is only to help my Dad out just wanting to know what I'm getting into.

Any other info or advice you have on Aussie/Perth or moving to Aussie would be cool too.

Cheers,

James

Way more girls than guys, except in mining towns where the ratio is 1 girl to 10 guys. Different stock than east coast, more like Kiwis.

Bali return is only about $500.

Dont go swimming if your afraid of sharks. and blue ring octopus

Mining industry rules WA, then wine and sheep. Check out the topless barmaids in a mining town. Go up north for major $$$$

Best thing about WA if you like camping is that in many places you can drive a 2WD off the road and through the trees and set up in the middle of nowhere.

Super long distances between towns and nothing in between except for drug crazed weirdos who are sometimes dangerous:yes: people disappear.

Oh yeah Perth parties and bars for young people are out of this world. But being a loner I lived at Margaret River to the south

We moved to perth few year ago to live, we packed everything and went. got a house and the lot.

after about 6 months, we decided we missed auckland and we repacked and moved back.

Perth is great, but other than the extreme heat and the flys, its just Auckland. Its just good in the summer because the more heat = the less clothes on the girls :).

but as for work, definitely more $$$ in perth than here.

I spent 16 weeks in Perth in 1999/2000. I quite enjoyed it, and liked Fremantle, but wouldn't like to live there.
Actually, despite being bigger than Auckland, I reckon it's more like Hamilton; both seem to exist solely as service towns, both are bisected by a large river, and both have no real culture. However, the big difference with Perth is unlike Hamilton which is centrally located, it is quite isolated.
Traffic is better than Auckland, climate's not bad either. When it rains, it's usually just a shower that blows through in a few hours, then it's back to hot sunny weather, blue skies, etc.

the money is definitely better than here, (like most of Oz) about the same population as Aucks and it's fekkin hot, but you get that living on the edge of a big arse desert

they've been getting around the 40 degree mark regularly during summer, air-con + pool FTW!

Good Luck Mate

Looking at your signature one of the things u will discover is the police are much less tolerant of young smart arse kiwis, so perhaps change your attitude to the name calling.

The other thing as a kiwi u might find tough is the place is full of bloody Aussies

Thanks guys, all interesting comments. Obviously I knew of the immense heat and the isolation but it's good to hear what other people have to say.

Your comment reminds me of something my Grandad said.
"There are only 3 things wrong with Australia,
The heat, the flies, and the Australians, and NOT in that order"

Cracks me up every time anyway.

As for my signature, don't worry, it is tongue in cheek :innocent: I'm just looking to work hard for a year and not get in trouble. Only problem is, bikes there are sooooo freaking expensive!!!

I read somewhere that the senior captain on the last pan am flight into Aussie announced that they were approaching the largest island state in the world - the land of the three "Ds" - the dingo the dago and the drongo. Apparently someone on the plane complained and he lost his job.:shit:

I lived there for 4 years, '86-'90. Great fun. Try and get a place nearer to the coast as the breeze later in the day is bliss, or maybe up in the Mundaring hills. Pubs are great, good bands etc. The old "sunday session" is a brilliant way to end the weekend especially if they have a good band. Jobs can be a bitch but it just depends how much you really want to work. Make sure you get out to Waneroo for a session, it's a great track. The drags are good as well with plenty of good gear on show. Be careful swimming. The Swan has big jellyfish even as far in as Perth. At sea there can be a problem with stingers or worse, and the water is typically freezing. Good vineyards in the Guildford area and of course Margaret River. Flats were good value for money comparatively. They didn't used to have a WOF system so some of the 2nd hand cars are pretty dodgy. However, with the dry climate they have hardly any rust. Swan breweries make a few good beers and the "Sail & Anchor" pub in Fremantle do a few as well, Redback springs to mind.
I only came back because I got homesick but I loved it and would move back if there was a good reason. Public transport is brilliant as well, really very little need to take your own vehicle to town on the piss or whatever. The WACA is worth a visit as well if there is something on, bit of Cricket for instance.

I've just moved to Aussie, from Auckland to Adelaide. Currently working in the SA desert and it's starting to get hot now - hovering around 40deg for the last couple of days and it's not even 'summer' yet. The town where I work has a 15:1 male to female ratio... not a lot to go around!

As for Adelaide, it's much nicer than where I work, and where I'm living is 5km from the city and 5km from the beach. Think Waihi beach style beach, but in a location like Takapuna except that the beach is about 20-30km from North to South. It's fairly temperate at the moment - was quite the same as Auckland a few weeks back but now it's warming up and we're sitting in the high 20's which is quite nice.

As mentioned, the woman over here, in the main centres at least, seem to be better looking and take better care of themselves than the girls in NZ. I went to a bar and got told it was a 'cockfest' yet the ratio was better than any club I ever went to in Auckland on a good night, and the girls were far better looking - that was before I got drunk too! That was on a Sunday night just before midnight...

Perth was quite nice when I visited last month. Seemed like a really cool city, a lot greener than Adelaide but it was hotter, and that was after coming back from the humidity of Malaysia.

Any particular reason you're going to Perth? Is your old man moving there?

Highlights:
Rottnest Island in summer.
Twilight sailing on the Swan.
Bikini clad babes in the garden bar in Freo.
Great mates into parties, fun, humour.
Bands in most pubs, (also Raunchy Girls at lunch time).
Warm weather.
Awsome country down south.

Low Lights.
Large population of dim witted Italians. (Mario and Gina are the worse kind of Aussies)
Flys on a eastly wind.
Lack of soft country side.

Oh cool, so you ended up going! Good on ya!

Only reason for Perth is the Old man is guaranteed a job there. He also knows a couple of people there too. Personally I dont care where I end up. Although having been to the Gold Coast before, I would like a change of surroundings and there are just so many Kiwi's there !!!

I spose the heat will be the one thing I'm worried about.

Oh one other thing Gareth, how did you go about getting your Tax file number? Did you get it whilst in NZ or did you have to wait until you were in Aussie? If so how long until you got it?

Hmm interesting thread some good ppints & surprisingly for a KB thread some utter crap:facepalm:
Check up about the TFN before you leave home, you don't mention your line of work.
Your job could either be megabucks or ordinary$.
Came here for 5 years 20 years ago:woohoo:

I think I'll ring the Australian Embassy on Monday and see what they have to say. I haven't mentioned my line of work because I'm only 18 and just out of school i.e not qualified so I'll do anything for good money. My old man is a panelbeater so will earn a bloody fortune compared to what he's getting here.

Conscious of not coming back but need the interest free student loan so will be back before I know it

TFN you do online at ato.gov.au - you need to have your passport handy, you need to be in Aussie to complete the form. Ring them up about 4 days later if it's urgent, their communication methods are slow but the info is ready pretty quickly. Don't stress it too much though, it won't stop you from getting a job but you will pay about 15% more tax than you should but, you're gonna claim it all back when you leave so it doesn't matter anyway.

If you're still interested in flying (think it was you) then save your money and pay for it NZ -hourly rates are the same $200AUD/$200NZD, but you'll obviously be getting more for your money in NZ after the exchange rate comes into effect.

Bureaucracy is pretty bad over here so don't expect anything to happen right away, also the cops are lot more strict and their laws are a lot tougher in general (as I'm finding out!).

Yep don't fuck anyone around.
Get a local drivers licence & especially a medicare card straight away.
There's no ACC here but the primitive & fuknBRUTAL workers comp system,( don't go there)
It's more laid back here but less forgiving if you fuck up:shit:

Yeah I did see 25' yesterday and thought that was a little strange. Looking forward to a change in climate though, so long as it doesn't kill me I spose :p
